Comparative study of stress responses, laterality and familiarity recognition between albino and pigmented fish.

Oculocutaneous albinism is the result of a combination of homozygous recessive mutations that block the synthesis of the tyrosine and melatonin hormones. This disability is associated with physiological limitations, e.g., visual impairment expressed by lower visual acuity and movement perception, and eventually leads to acrophobia and/or photophobia, suggesting a potentially higher stress level associated with the behavioral responses of individuals with albinism to external stimuli compared to their pigmented conspecifics. However, in fish, differences in behavioral and/or physiological respo

The Role of Emotional Distress Tolerance on Fear Responding in a Heights-Fearful Sample: Perceived Versus Actual Behavior.

Emotional distress tolerance (EDT)-or the ability to withstand negative emotional states-is considered a transdiagnostic risk factor for psychopathology. Although EDT is theorized to play a role in anxiety development and maintenance, research aiming to delineate the relationship between anxiety and EDT is lacking. The current study tested whether self-reported EDT predicted self-reported and actual avoidance in the presence of feared stimuli using a heights-fearful sample. Moreover, the study tested whether EDT predicted other in-the-moment fear responses, such as peak anxiety, anxious cognit

Fear inoculation among snake experts.

BACKGROUND: Fear acquisition of certain stimuli, such as snakes, is thought to be rapid, resistant to extinction, and easily transferable onto other similar objects. It has been hypothesized that due to increased survival chances, preparedness to instantly acquire fear towards evolutionary threats has been hardwired into neural pathways of the primate brain. Here, we compare participants' fear of snakes according to experience; from those who often deal with snakes and even suffer snakebites to those unfamiliar with snakes. METHODS: The Snake Questionnaire-12 (SNAQ-12) and Specific Phobia Que

Identifying pain perceptual biases related to fear of pain and threat in a pain-free sample.

BACKGROUND: The association between fear of pain (FOP) and pain intensity has remained unclear. This study aimed to examine whether highly pain-fearful participants showed pain perceptual biases to general painful stimulus or to specific threatening painful stimulus. METHODS: Fifty-nine undergraduates were recruited into low (n = 30) and high (n = 29) FOP groups and completed a threatening pain perception task with two tasks. Task 1 assessed pain perceptual biases by calculating the percentage of near-threshold pain stimulus judged as painful and assessing the average pain intensity ratings t

A comparative study of death anxiety and death attitudes in Han and Tibetan ethnic groups.

This study compared the responses of 380 Han and 315 Tibetan respondents regarding their attitudes about death and factors influencing those attitudes using the Death Anxiety Scale and Death Attitude Profile-Revised. The results show that Tibetan respondents expressed more death anxiety, fear of death, death avoidance, and escape acceptance than the Han participants, while Han participants showed more neutral acceptance than the Tibetan participants. There was a significant interaction between age and gender around Approaching Death. In addition, the death attitudes of Han and Tibetan particip

Does Psychosocial Ego Development Partially Mediate the Association Between Defense Mechanisms and Death Attitude?

Some authors suggest the existence of links between the mechanisms of defense and attitude toward death, however, mechanisms underlying these relationships are not well understood. The objective of the present research was to investigate whether psychosocial ego development is a partial mediator in the association between mechanisms of defense and death attitude. The study included participants (N = 382) aged 19-85 (M = 47.02, SD = 16.19). Three measures were used: Defense Style Questionnaire-40, Psychosocial Inventory of Ego Strengths, and Death Attitude Profile-Revised. Findings partly confi

Effect of Multi-Modal Therapies for Kinesiophobia Caused by Musculoskeletal Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify the effect of multi-modal therapies that combined physical and psychological therapies for kinesiophobia caused by musculoskeletal disorders compared with uni-modal therapy of only phycological therapy or psychological therapy. The search terms and their logical connector were as following: (1) "kinesiophobia" at the title or abstract; and (2) "randomized" OR "randomized" at title or abstract; not (3) "design" OR "protocol" at the title. They were typed into the databases of Medline (EBSCO), PubMed, and Ovid, following the different in

Acrophobia Quantified by EEG Based on CNN Incorporating Granger Causality.

The aim of this study is to quantify acrophobia and provide safety advices for high-altitude workers. Considering that acrophobia is a fuzzy quantity that cannot be accurately evaluated by conventional detection methods, we propose a comprehensive solution to quantify acrophobia. Specifically, this study simulates a virtual reality environment called High-altitude Plank Walking Challenge, which provides a safe and controlled experimental environment for subjects. Besides, a method named Granger Causality Convolutional Neural Network (GCCNN) combining convolutional neural network and Granger ca

Nomophobia: An Individual's Growing Fear of Being without a Smartphone-A Systematic Literature Review.

This review examines the current literature focused on nomophobia (objectives, methodological design, main variables, sample details, and measurement methods) in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. To this end, we conducted a systematic literature review in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) guidelines. The initial sample consisted of 142 articles, of which 42 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed in detail. The findings show that the current research is in an exploratory phase, with a greater predominance of descriptive, nonexperimental,

Effect of nomophobia on the anxiety levels of undergraduate students.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of restricting mobile phone use with time on the anxiety levels of undergraduate students having moderate nomophobia. The study also aimed to find whether cognitive and sensory distractions within the environment could delay anxious thoughts and subsequent rise in anxiety levels. METHODS: Current research was based on a quasi-experimental design with non-equivalent control group, i.e., the participants were not randomly assigned to groups. The participants were 64 undergraduate students taken from a university located in Islama

Oxytocin in General Anxiety and Social Fear: A Translational Approach.

The neuropeptide oxytocin (OXT) has been revealed as a profound anxiolytic and antistress factor of the brain, besides its many prosocial and reproductive effects. Therefore, there is substantial scientific and medical interest in its potential therapeutic use for the treatment of psychopathologies associated with anxiety, fear, and social dysfunctions, such as generalized anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and social anxiety disorder, as well as autism and schizophrenia, among others. Focusing on preclinical studies, we review the existing evidence for the regulatory capacity of

The hypnotic induction profile and absorption.

This study examined the relationship between scores on the Hypnotic Induction Profile (HIP) and the trait of absorption in three different clinical groups: Smokers (n = 226), Phobics (n = 95), and patients with Chronic Pain (n = 65). Two hypotheses were investigated. The first predicted that both the Eye-Roll sign (ERS) and Induction Score (IND) of the HIP would correlate similarly (r = .30) with scores on the Tellegen Absorption Scale (TAS), as has been previously reported with other measures of hypnotic responsivity in student samples. The second was that using a combination of both ERS and

Phagophobia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Phagophobia is a rare disorder and the literature is sparse. There is no specific treatment described for this life threatening condition. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient is a 25-year-old Sri Lankan female with recurrent difficulty in swallowing. Following her initial episode which lasted one year, she presented to us with inability to swallow for one week. She was dependent on liquids and semisolids. The medical team confidently excluded an organic cause. She had difficulty swallowing solids with behaviours like swallowing with the aid of water and swallowing small boluses. She ha

The effect of self-imagery on symptoms and processes in social anxiety: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive models of Social Anxiety Disorder suggest that negative self-images maintain social fears despite repeated exposure to benign social situations. An accumulating body of evidence supports this notion, and preliminary data indicate that modifying self-imagery can potentially reduce fears of negative evaluation in socially anxious individuals. This systematic review aims to evaluate the existing research on the effect of self-imagery on symptoms and processes in social anxiety. METHODS: The following databases were searched: PsycInfo, Medline, PubMed, and Cochrane Central R

Optimal attentional focus during exposure in specific phobia: a meta-analysis.

Over the last 30 years, researchers have disagreed over the consequences of diverting attention from threat for exposure efficacy, which is an important theoretical and clinical debate. Therefore, the present meta-analysis assessed the efficacy of attentionally focused exposure against distracted and attentionally uninstructed exposure regarding distress, behavioral, and physiological outcomes. We included 15 randomized studies with specific phobia, totaling 444 participants and targeting outcomes at post-exposure and follow-up. Results indicated no difference between the efficacy of distracte

Pharmacological treatment of social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (social phobia) is a common and typically long-standing medical condition, characterized by an excessive fear of being observed or evaluated negatively in social or performance situations. Efficacious interventions in acute treatment include cognitive behavioural therapy and a range of medications including many antidepressants, some benzodiazepines and anticonvulsants, and the antipsychotic olanzapine. Most studies report no significant differences in overall efficacy or tolerability between active compounds. Responders to previous acute treatment benefit from continui
