Clinical efficacy and tolerability of terbinafine in patients with pityriasis versicolor.

The antifungal efficacy and tolerability of 1% terbinafine cream vs. 1% bifonazole cream were assessed in a single blind randomized trial in patients with pityriasis versicolor. Terbinafine, a drug of the allylamines group, a new class of anti-mycotic agents, blocks sterol biosynthesis in the pathogen through inhibition of squalene epoxidase and consequent squalene accumulation, a primarily fungicidal process. Forty pityriasis versicolor patients, (18 M, 22 F; mean age 32.4 years; min. 16, max. 65), used 1% terbinafine cream or 1% bifonazole cream for a maximum of 4 weeks. All patients were fo…

Functional and morphological analysis of the horny layer of pityriasis alba.

The affected skin of pityriasis alba showed functional defects in both hygroscopicity and water-holding capacity detectable by water sorption-desorption test. Furthermore using skin surface biopsy technique in 5 patients, we noted that the mean area of corneocyte obtained from the affected skin of pityriasis alba was smaller and that the surface of that area showed a more prominent villous pattern than the adjacent normal skin in scanning electron microscopical observation. In this study we demonstrated the abnormalities of the horny layer in pityriasis alba, which suggest that the condition i…

Erythematous pityriasis versicolor: a case report and review of the literature.

Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a superficial fungal infection caused by Malassezia species, usually presenting as hypo- or hyperpigmented macules with fine scaling. We report a rare case of an erythematous variant of PV in a 28-year-old man, confirmed by potassium hydroxide examination of skin scrapings and direct microscopy. Awareness of such atypical variants is crucial in order for dermatologists and practitioners to avoid misdiagnosis and unwanted treatments. Our case also highlights the importance of considering these atypical variants in differential diagnosis of erythematous dermatoses.

Biologics for Treatment of Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris: A Literature Review.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the published efficacy and adverse event rates associated with existing biologics for the treatment of pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP). DATA SOURCES: A literature review using the PubMed database (January 1990-July 2023) was conducted. Multiple search combinations were conducted using "pityriasis rubra pilaris" and various biologics as keywords to identify relevant articles. STUDY SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION: Inclusion criteria included all study types that were published within the past 30 years in English and mentioned at least one biologic and PRP. A preliminary se…

Dermoscopic Perspective of Pityriasis Versicolor in a Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis versicolor is a common superficial fungal infection which is usually easily diagnosed with Wood's lamp examination and 10% potassium hydroxide mount. However, these modalities have varying sensitivity and specificity. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to ascertain the dermoscopic features of pityriasis versicolor lesionally as well as perilesionally using dermoscopy, a non-invasive diagnostic tool. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, consecutive patients with pityriasis versicolor underwent dermoscopic examination of lesions and 2 cm around lesion…

Factors associated with pityriasis versicolor in a large national database.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis versicolor (PV), a cutaneous fungal infection, most commonly affects adolescents and young adults and is associated with hyperhidrosis and humid weather. Understanding other factors associated with PV might help improve diagnostic and treatment practices. OBJECTIVES: PV's associations with patient demographics, comorbidities and medication exposures were assessed using the All of Us Database, a large, diverse, national database from the United States. METHODS: A case-control study with multivariable analysis was performed. RESULTS: We identified 456 PV case-patients a…
