Forty-four patients aged between 12 and 64 years comprising 16 hepatitis (group 1); 12 cirrhosis (group 2); 16 primary liver cell carcinoma (group 3) and 18 normal controls were studied. In hepatitis, plasma total cholesterol and total cholesterol/phospholipid ratio were significantly reduced, while the changes in red cell cholesterol and phospholipid and plasma phospholipid were not. The authors report a case of plasma cell granuloma of the lung, an inflammatory tumour occurring in a young Egyptian aged 23 without any history of chest diseases. The patient had had three weeks before his hospital admission light haemoptysis and associated with weight loss. The diagnosis was made on a bronchial biopsy. Thus a diagnosis could be made without recourse to surgery because of the occurrence of bronchial invasion. No aetiological factor was found to explain the pathogenesis of the granuloma.

To determine the potential steroid sparing effect of plasma exchange in pemphigus we enrolled 40 patients in a multicenter randomized study. Eighteen patients were treated by prednisolone alone, 22 by prednisolone plus ten large-volume plasma exchanges over four weeks. Using a pH stat method, we measured the activity of carbonic anhydrase (CA) from dog erythrocytes in the presence of various amounts of dog plasma. Seven aromatic metabolites of phenylalanine were determined in plasma of 20 patients with classical phenylketonuria by means of capillary gas chromatography. The results obtained showed good correlation with plasma phenylalanine levels. Plasma aromatic acid levels may prove useful in the diagnosis and management of phenylketonuria, as well as in research of this disorder.

Plasma and blood viscosities were studied in 15 hyperlipidemic (HLP) patients and in 10 healthy volunteers. Viscosities were measured at 25 degrees C using a couette type viscosimeter. Plasma and blood viscosities were significantly increased in HLP patients. This increase in viscosity was better correlated with triglyceride than with cholesterol level. This result might partially account for the clinical differences observed between hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia.

Plasma histamine levels during enflurane anaesthesia were studied in 14 oral surgery patients without any history of allergy and general disease except for the oral region. Plasma histamine was measured using a fluorometric method combined with high speed liquid chromatography. The difference between the histamine levels measured at each time before and during oral surgery was not significant.
