Progressive SCAR14 with unclear speech, developmental delay, tremor, and behavioral problems caused by a homozygous deletion of the SPTBN2 pleckstrin homology domain.

We report on nine members of a consanguineous Pakistani family with primary presentation of intellectual disability, developmental delay, limb and gait ataxia, behavioral and speech problems, and tremor. By linkage mapping and exome sequencing we identified novel homozygous splicing variant c.6375-1G>C in SPTBN2. To date, only two other SPTBN2 mutations with recessive pattern of inheritance causing SCAR14 (spinocerebellar ataxia, autosomal recessive 14) that manifest with developmental ataxia and cognitive impairment, or cerebellar ataxia, mental retardation, and pyramidal signs have been repo

[Parental Social Status and other determinants of quality of life and behavioral problems: An analysis of German preterm births between 1987-2004].

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the factors affecting the development of preterm children in Germany is limited. We analysed the prevalence of preterm birth in Germany using the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents 2003-2006 and assessed factors associated with quality of life (QOL) and behavioural development in preterm children (< 37 weeks' gestational age). METHODS: Data were weighted and preterm prevalence was calculated by socioeconomic status (SES) and year of birth for  1,106 preterm children. Using linear regression models, the relationship between soci

Sluggish cognitive tempo in psychiatrically hospitalized children: factor structure and relations to internalizing symptoms, social problems, and observed behavioral dysregulation.

As research examining sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) advances, it is important to examine the structure and validity of SCT in a variety of samples, including samples of children who are clinically-distressed but not referred specifically for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The present study used a large sample of psychiatrically hospitalized children (N = 680; 73 % male; 66 % African American) between the ages of 6 and 12 to examine the latent structure of SCT, ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), depression, and anxiety using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Comparing autism, PDD-NOS, and other developmental disabilities on parent-reported behavior problems: little evidence for ASD subtype validity.

Studies on the distinction between Autistic Disorder (AD) and Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) have been inconclusive. This study examined the validity of PDD-NOS by comparing it to AD and other developmental disorders (DD) on parent-reported behavior problems. Fifty-four children with PDD-NOS were individually matched on age and non-verbal IQ to 54 children with AD and 54 children with DD. Groups were compared on select subscales of the Child Behavior Checklist. High rates of psychopathology were observed in both ASD groups. The only difference between PDD-NO

Predictors of change following cognitive-behavioral treatment of children with anxiety problems: a preliminary investigation on negative automatic thoughts and anxiety control.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate negative automatic thoughts and anxiety control as predictors of change produced by cognitive-behavioral treatment of youths with anxiety disorders. Forty-five high-anxious children aged between 9 and 12 years who were selected from the primary school population, received a standardized CBT intervention that was provided in a group format. Before and after the intervention, children completed scales of negative automatic thoughts and perceived control over anxiety-related events as well as a questionnaire for measuring DSM-defined anxiety disord

Commentary on special section on "bidirectional parent-child relationships": the continuing evolution of dynamic, transactional models of parenting and youth behavior problems.

Creative and methodologically sophisticated longitudinal research on bidirectionality in parenting and child behavior can shed important new light on the dynamics of behavior-problem development. The articles assembled for this Special Section are at the forefront of efforts aimed at tracing the interplay of parenting behavior and child and adolescent adjustment problems over time. In this commentary, we provide a brief overview of thinking and research on bidirectionality and then highlight key themes and findings reported in these articles. We describe some of the challenges in research on b

A survey of problematic sexualized behaviors of children in the New York City Child Welfare System:estimates of problem, impact on services, and need for training.

Forty-eight of 52 (92%) agencies contracted with the New York City Administration for Children's Services (ACS) responded to a survey about problematic sexualized behaviors (PSB) of children in different levels of care within the child welfare system. Results revealed that almost all agencies reported PSB within their foster boarding home and residential treatment centers. A majority of agencies perceived PSB to be a significant problem for which staff and families were not sufficiently trained. These findings highlight many avenues for advocacy, clinical intervention, and staff development.

The growth of conduct problem behaviors from middle childhood to early adolescence: sex differences and the suspected influence of early alcohol use.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the levels and rates of growth of conduct problem behaviors over time in an urban sample of American youth. Our hypotheses focused on differences between the sexes and between youths with and those without early use of alcohol without parental permission. METHOD: Data for this study are from an ongoing epidemiologic study of urban public school students, recruited originally at the time of their entry into Grades 1-2 between 1985 and 1987. Each spring, from 1991 to 1993, a total of 1,212 students were interviewed privately for this study. A total of 408 (54.…

School-related internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors and their associations with subjective well-being among Chinese children and adolescents: a network analysis.

Internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors frequently co-occur among children and adolescents and are associated with their subjective well-being (SWB). However, the symptom-level interactions underlying this co-occurrence remain unclear. Grounded in a network analysis framework, this study investigated the conditional associations among these school-related problem behaviors and their associations with SWB. Data were drawn from 2,049 students in the 2022 wave of the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). We estimated indicator networks to identify functionally central and bridging indicato…

Bedtime procrastination as a typical problem of self-regulation? Insights from the examination of heart rate variability, behavioral regulation and emotion regulation.

Bedtime procrastination (BP), recognized as a common self-regulation issue, is linked to insufficient sleep and in turn, adverse health outcomes. However, the specific contributions of different components of self-regulation - particularly the biological underpinnings - remain insufficiently understood. This cross-sectional study aims to explore the relationship between BP and self-regulation components, namely vagally-mediated HRV (vmHRV) as physiological concomitant of self-regulation, behavioral regulation, and emotion regulation. A final sample of N = 135 adults completed a baseline vmHRV

Does gestational vitamin D attenuate the negative effects of prenatal depression on offspring emotional and behavioral problems? Findings in the ECHO cohort.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal depression is associated with offspring behavioral problems, but heterogeneity in the strength of this association is not well understood. Maternal vitamin D concentration during pregnancy is important for fetal brain development and may help explain this variability, with potential differences by timing of exposure and maternal race. METHODS: Using data from 1,451 mother-child pairs in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes cohort, linear mixed-effects models examined associations between prenatal depressive symptom severity, gestational 25-hydroxy-vitamin

Prenatal targeted maternal pregnancy metabolomic profiles, child emotional and behavioral problems, and autism related traits in the NYU CHES cohort.

The prenatal period is a critical window for neurodevelopment, during which maternal metabolic processes are increasingly recognized to shape later behavioral and autism-related traits. We examined associations between targeted maternal urinary metabolomic profiles across pregnancy and preschool emotional, behavioral, and autism-related outcomes in the New York University Children's Health and Environment Study (NYU CHES), a large prospective birth cohort. Targeted metabolomics was conducted on maternal urine samples collected in early, mid, and late pregnancy. Child outcomes were assessed at

Kids These Days! A Cross-Temporal Meta-Analysis of Changes in Emotional and Behavioral Problems of Population-Based Samples Over the Past Decades.

There is a general belief that mental health problems are increasing in younger generations, though little objective comparisons exist. The current meta-analysis examines changes in subclinical mean-level overall symptom burden and shifts in specific domains among population-based samples of youth (1-18 years) globally over the last four decades. We search systematically in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCO and Google Scholar with pre-registered criteria. Included studies (k = 175, N = 418,528) use the standardized and cross-culturally validated Child Behavior Checklist with parent-, teach

The role of maternal sensitivity and irritable infant temperament in the development of behavioral problems: Findings from the Bangalore Child Health and Development Study.

In spite of extensive evidence from studies in the Western contexts that maternal sensitivity and infant temperament are associated with emotional and behavioural adjustment in early childhood, we do not know whether this is the case in non-western cultural contexts. We investigated whether early maternal sensitivity to infant's distress and irritable infant temperament predict child's externalizing and internalizing problems at age 1, and whether maternal sensitivity to distress moderated the association between irritable temperament and child mental health outcomes in a sample of mother-infa

Impaired Emotion Recognition: A Potential Marker for Social Behavioral Problems in Patients With Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment and Early Alzheimer Disease?

OBJECTIVE: Emotion recognition, an important aspect of social cognition, can be impaired already in early Alzheimer disease dementia and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and may underly social behavioral changes, which can increase caregiver burden. However, social behavior is difficult to assess in outpatient settings. We evaluated whether impaired emotion recognition is related to proxy-rated social behavioral problems and thus can serve as a marker of these changes. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Emotion recognition was assessed with Ekman 60 Faces Test (EFT-total, 6 separate emotions) in p
