Potential savings of a program to prevent ankle sprain recurrence: economic evaluation of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The most common ankle injury is the lateral ankle sprain. Dutch annual sports-related ankle sprain costs can roughly be estimated at €187,200,000. Research has shown that proprioceptive training accounts for an approximated overall 50% reduction in ankle sprain recurrence rate. HYPOTHESIS: An unsupervised proprioceptive training program to reduce the recurrence of lateral ankle sprains will reduce overall health care costs. DESIGN: Cohort study (economic analysis); Level of evidence, 2. METHODS: The study included 522 male and female athletes: 256 athletes (120 female and 136 ma

Rehabilitation of distal radioulnar joint instability.

Distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instabilities are common and often combined with other injuries of the interosseous membrane and/or the proximal radioulnar joint. Once they are diagnosed and the treatment is chosen, physiotherapists have limited choices due to the lack of validated protocols. The benefits of proprioception and neuromuscular rehabilitation have been brought to light for the shoulder, knee and ankle joints, among others. However, no program has been described for the DRUJ. The purpose of this article is to study the muscular elements responsible for active DRUJ stability, and to …

Bodily self-perception during voluntary actions: The causal contribution of premotor cortex and cerebellum.

Voluntary actions are accompanied by the experience of controlling one's own movements (sense of agency) and the feeling that the moving body part belongs to one's self (sense of body ownership). So far, agency and body ownership have been investigated separately, leaving the neural underpinnings of the relation between the two largely unexplored. The aim of this study was to explore the causal role of two multisensory brain regions, that is the premotor cortex (PMc) and the cerebellum, in agency and body ownership concurrently on the same behavioral task, i.e., the moving Rubber Hand Illusion

Manual therapy in joint and nerve structures combined with exercises in the treatment of recurrent ankle sprains: A randomized, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent ankle sprains often involve residual symptoms for which subjects often perform proprioceptive or/and strengthening exercises. However, the effectiveness of mobilization to influence important nerve structures due to its anatomical distribution like tibial and peroneal nerves is unclear. OBJETIVES: To analyze the effects of proprioceptive/strengthening exercises versus the same exercises and manual therapy including mobilizations to influence joint and nerve structures in the management of recurrent ankle sprains. STUDY DESIGN: A randomized single-blind controlled clinic

Nonvisual multisensory impairment of body perception in anorexia nervosa: a systematic review of neuropsychological studies.

BACKGROUND: Body image distortion is a central symptom of Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Even if corporeal awareness is multisensory majority of AN studies mainly investigated visual misperception. We systematically reviewed AN studies that have investigated different nonvisual sensory inputs using an integrative multisensory approach to body perception. We also discussed the findings in the light of AN neuroimaging evidence. METHODS: PubMed and PsycINFO were searched until March, 2014. To be included in the review, studies were mainly required to: investigate a sample of patients with current or pas

Exploring the effects of ecological activities during exposure to optical prisms in healthy individuals.

Prism adaptation improves a wide range of manifestations of left spatial neglect in right-brain-damaged patients. The typical paradigm consists in repeated pointing movements to visual targets, while patients wear prism goggles that displace the visual scene rightwards. Recently, we demonstrated the efficacy of a novel adaptation procedure, involving a variety of every-day visuo-motor activities. This "ecological" procedure proved to be as effective as the repetitive pointing adaptation task in ameliorating symptoms of spatial neglect, and was better tolerated by patients. However, the absence

Experimentally induced deep cervical muscle pain distorts head on trunk orientation.

PURPOSE: We wanted to explore the specific proprioceptive effect of cervical pain on sensorimotor control. Sensorimotor control comprises proprioceptive feedback, central integration and subsequent muscular response. Pain might be one cause of previously reported disturbances in joint kinematics, head on trunk orientation and postural control. However, the causal relationship between the impact of cervical pain on proprioception and thus on sensorimotor control has to be established. METHODS: Eleven healthy subjects were examined in their ability to reproduce two different head on trunk targe…

[Sensorimotor deficit after capsulolabral reconstruction in chronic instability of the shoulder. A clinical experimental study].

The anterior capsulolabral reconstruction technique described by Jobe is a modified Bankart repair. The capsular shift is performed in a hor … eir prior sporting activity level. This particular problem was addressed by investigating the joint proprioception and the activity of the periarticular muscles. The results confirmed a persistent deficit of proprioception as well as a pathologic EMG pattern after anterior capsulolabral reconstruction, which may explain the problem of incomplete restoration of t …

Sensibility deficiencies in the hands of children with spastic hemiplegia.

We evaluated 40 children with spastic hemiplegia due to cerebral palsy for sensory function and relative limb size in the affected and unaffected upper extremities. Sensory function of each limb was evaluated with respect to stereognosis (12 objects), two-point discrimination, and proprioception. Four size measurements of each limb were made: arm and forearm circumference and forearm and forearm-hand length. This study showed that 97% of the spastic limbs had a stereognosis deficit, 90% had a two-point discrimination deficit, and 46% had a proprioception deficit. Thus sensory deficits are the …

Interoception, body perception and awareness. The heritage of György Adám.

UNLABELLED: Two series of studies are reported dealing with (1) psychophysical characteristics and (2) interactions of visceroceptive and somatosensoric information processing. The first studies characterized detection, graduation and localisation of visceral as compared to somatic stimuli. The second series investigated somatovisceral discrimination, masking, and summation at different levels of awareness. METHODS: Distension of the sigmoid colon served as standard model. The visceral stimulus was applied by a balloon probe in the sigmoid colon, the external abdominal stimulus by a ring-shap

Fundamental limitations of kilohertz-frequency carriers in afferent fibre recruitment with transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation.

Kilohertz-frequency (KHF) waveforms are gaining traction in transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) for motor recovery after paralysis. However, the mechanisms by which these fast-alternating currents depolarize proprioceptive afferent and motor efferent fibres remain unknown. To address this gap, we conducted a study in 28 participants showing, through peripheral nerve stimulation experiments and computational modelling, that KHF waveforms negatively impact the processes required to electrically induce action potentials, thereby increasing response thresholds and biasing recruitment tow

The Effect of Total Knee Replacement on Dual-Task Gait Performance in Older Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Total knee replacement (TKR) is a common solution for patients with advanced knee osteoarthritis (OA). Still, fall rates remain relatively high after surgery. TKR may alter pain and knee function, balance control, and proprioception. However, given the role of complex (dual-task) walking in fall prediction for older adults, it is unknown how TKR alters the attentional demand of walking in older adults. The goal of this study was to examine the effect of TKR on dual-task walking among older adults. METHODS: Participants were evaluated 1 month before surgery and 4.5 months after surg…
