PURPOSE: Implants placed in fresh extraction sites and healed sites were restored simultaneously by cross-arch provisional fixed prostheses. Clinical and radiographic parameters were recorded for up to 36 months.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Treatment with a full-arch implant prosthesis, either screw-retained or cemented, was assigned to 54 patients. A total of 676 implants were placed in either immediate extraction sites (n = 367) or in healed alveoli (n = 309), followed by placement of a one-piece provisional prosthesis. The definitive restoration was placed 3 to 6 months after implant placement.

Background: Short implants have been used in the restoration of edentulous jaws in the past several years. However, some studies have suggested that short implants are less successful than standard implants. The aim of this study is to investigate the outcome of short implants placed in the posterior maxilla or mandible following one-stage or immediate-function protocols with a follow-up of 7 years (clinically) and 5 years (radiographically). Methods: This study included 127 patients rehabilitated with 217 implants measuring 7 mm and supporting 157 fixed prostheses in the posterior segments of

Structural degeneration is an important long-term disadvantage of biologic prostheses. However, early failure of these prostheses is uncommon and is usually caused by rapid calcification. We report the successful management of a rare case of early failure of a stentless aortic bioprosthesis (within 4 months of implantation). The patient presented with severe noncalcific aortic regurgitation secondary to prolapse of the noncoronary leaflet. In consideration of the acute nature of failure in this new-generation bioprosthesis and its unclear cause, we believe that this report, albeit of a single

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The first generations of total ankle replacements (TARs) showed a high rate of early failure. In the last decades, much progress has been made in the development of TARs, with the newer generation showing better results. We evaluated TARs implanted with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or juvenile inflammatory arthritis (JIA) as indication.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 58 total ankle prostheses (Buechel-Pappas and STAR type) were implanted in patients with RA (n = 53) or JIA (n = 5) in 54 patients (4 bilateral). After a mean followup of 2.7 (1-9) years, all patients were reviewed by

PURPOSE: Ceramic implants are gradually becoming an alternative to standard titanium implants; however, there is still a lack of scientific data on the former. Thus, the present study was conducted to assess the clinical and microbiological performance of a two-piece ceramic implant system after a mean follow-up period of 2 years.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 17 patients from a collective of 21 from a private dental practice that met the inclusion criteria received 32 two-piece ceramic implants (CERALOG, BioHorizons Camlog, Basel, Switzerland). The implants were restored with single crow

Understanding speech in noisy environments is often taken for granted; however, this task is particularly challenging for people with cochlear hearing loss, even with hearing aids or cochlear implants. A significant limitation to improving auditory prostheses is our lack of understanding of the neural basis for robust speech perception in noise. Perceptual studies suggest the slowly varying component of the acoustic waveform (envelope, ENV) is sufficient for understanding speech in quiet, but the rapidly varying temporal fine structure (TFS) is important in noise. These perceptual findings hav

Background: Prosthetic ankle infection is an infrequent and rarely explored prosthetic joint infection (PJI). In early infection, the debridement of implants inserted using the transfibular approach has certain peculiarities that pose a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge, the impact of which on infection prognosis is still unknown. Methods: This study prospectively collected all cases of transfibular prosthetic ankle infection at a tertiary hospital between 2014 and 2022, describing their demographic, clinical, microbiological, and management characteristics, along with the outcome over a lo

BACKGROUND: The bone growth factor was a conditioning circumstance that limited the use of implants in children and adolescents, which, in cases of anodontia or severe oligodontia, forced pediatric dentists to abandon their use, leaving children with removable prostheses, at an age and in a social context with increasingly functional and esthetic demands. Purpose. The objective is to assess which variables influence the survival of dental implants in pediatric patients with severe agenesis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A search was carried out in the Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Science databases, whic

Implant design factors and the abutment connection are correlated with crestal bone stability. The aim of the present study was to evaluate a new type of screw-retained prostheses delivered on tissue-level implants with conical external vertical seal and internal hexagon connection. Implants 4.25 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length (Prama, Sweden and Martina) were placed in partially edentulous patients needing at least one implant in the healed site, having sufficient bone volume. The implant neck was positioned above the bone crest. A healing abutment was placed according to a one-stage appro

Pediatric patients with missing tooth pose a challenge to a dental clinician for the effective, functional, esthetic, and durable restoration and rehabilitation. There is a range of various prosthetic treatment options for such a dental condition, such as removable or fixed prosthesis. However, these prostheses are not much clinically effective, efficient, and durable and show low compliance, particularly in pediatric patients. In recent decades, dental implants have emerged as a boon for dentistry. Implants are superior in terms of functions, esthetics, durability, and compliance in adult pat

5-10 million persons are living with cobalt-chromium joint or spinal implants therefore are systemically exposed to ionic and nanoparticulate cobalt-chromium metallosis degradation products from wear or corrosive mechanisms. Cobalt's toxidrome (cobaltism) is characterized by neurologic, cardiovascular, immune, and constitutional symptoms and findings. Orthopedic-Implant-Cobaltism (OIC) became recognized in 2010 related to metal-on-metal hip resurfacings and replacement of which two million were fitted before largely silent market recall. Recently the at-risk population has be expanded to any p

Osseointegrated transradial prostheses have the potential to preserve the natural range of wrist rotation, which improves the performance of activities of daily living and reduces compensatory movements that potentially lead to secondary health problems over time. This is possible by enabling the radius and the ulna bone to move with respect to each other, restoring the functionality of the original distal-radioulnar joint. In this paper, we report on psychophysics tests performed on an osseointegrated transradial amputee with the aim to understand the extent of mobility of the implants that i

Whether arch-specific anatomical configuration affects early peri-implant bone behavior in monolithic zirconia full-arch prostheses is unclear. This prospective cohort study evaluated 40 edentulous patients with 49 monolithic zirconia full-arch prostheses (25 maxillary, 24 mandibular; 308 implants). MBR and patient-reported outcomes were recorded at baseline and 12 months; mandibular morphology (U- vs. V-shaped) was classified on CBCT, and inter-implant distance and cantilever length were measured on CAD designs. Because 9 of 40 patients contributed both arches, the primary MBR comparison used
