Quality of cochlear implant rehabilitation under COVID-19 conditions.

BACKGROUND: The rehabilitation process following cochlear implant (CI) surgery is carried out in a multimodal therapy according to German national guidelines and includes technical and medical aftercare. In times of the corona pandemic surgery and rehabilitation appointments were cancelled or delayed leading to a more difficult access to auditory rehabilitation. Newly implemented hygiene modalities due to the SARS-CoV‑2 pandemic have changed medical aftercare and the rehabilitation process. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of rehabilitation under corona conditions. MATERIAL A

Why do patients with psychosis listen to and believe derogatory and threatening voices? 21 reasons given by patients.

BACKGROUND: Around two-thirds of patients with auditory hallucinations experience derogatory and threatening voices (DTVs). Understandably, when these voices are believed then common consequences can be depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation. There is a need for treatment targeted at promoting distance from such voice content. The first step in this treatment development is to understand why patients listen to and believe voices that are appraised as malevolent. AIMS: To learn from patients their reasons for listening to and believing DTVs. METHOD: Theoretical sampling was used to recruit

Living the life you want following a diagnosis of bipolar disorder: A grounded theory approach.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is considered a severe and lifelong mental health diagnosis. However, there is growing evidence of people defying the odds and recovering. Processes underlying recovery remain poorly understood. This study aimed to explore these recovery processes and extend on the length of recovery defined within previous research. Twelve people previously diagnosed with BD, who had not experienced an episode of depression and/or mania for four or more years, were interviewed. Standardised diagnostic interviews (Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-V, Rese

Psychological and behavioural impacts of the 2008 China earthquake on blood donors.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: On May 12, 2008, a severe earthquake hit Sichuan province in China. A post-earthquake survey was conducted to study the earthquake's effect on blood donor behaviour and stress at three blood centres at varying distances from the epicentre. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire was developed to assess donor post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) and attitudes toward giving blood. Responses were compared by centre and donor characteristics using multivariate logistic regression techniques. RESULTS: Of all 17 456 donors, the overall prevalence of PTSD was 13.2%. Dono

[Effects of volcanic eruptions on environment and health].

Volcanoes pose a threat to almost half a billion people; today there are approximately 500 active volcanoes on Earth, and every year there are 10 to 40 volcanic eruptions. Volcanic eruptions produce hazardous effects for the environment, climate, and the health of the exposed persons, and are associated with the deterioration of social and economic conditions. Along with magma and steam (H2O), the following gases surface in the environment: carbon dioxide (CO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulphide (H2S), carbon sulphide (CS), carbon disulfide (CS2), hydrogen chlor

Vision-specific health-related quality of life: content areas for nursing home residents.

Nursing home residents have a high prevalence of remediable visual impairment and blindness. Future research on the effectiveness of providing eye care to nursing home residents will need to include a vision-targeted health-related quality of life (HRQOL) instrument appropriate for this population. The purpose of this study was to identify the core content areas for such an instrument. In-depth interviews on vision-related issues were conducted with 40 residents. Interviews were audio-taped, transcribed, and coded using a standardized protocol. Binocular distance and near visual acuity were as

Loss of recent memory after bilateral hippocampal lesions. 1957.

Bilateral medial temporal lobe resection in man results in a persistent impairment of recent memory whenever the removal is carried far enough posteriorly to damage portions of the anterior hippocampus and hippocampal gyrus. This conclusion is based on formal psychological testing of nine cases (eight psychotic and one epileptic) carried out from one and one-half to four years after operation. The degree of memory loss appears to depend on the extent of hippocampal removal. In two cases in which bilateral resection was carried to a distance of 8 cm posterior to the temporal tips the loss was p

A semiquantitative score system for epidemiologic studies of fetal alcohol syndrome.

A total of 464 children of 323 women registered for alcoholism treatment in Budapest, Hungary, were studied in 1977-1979. A complex epidemiologic investigation was carried out using medical, psychological and anthropological data. The data were evaluated on the basis of a semiquantitative diagnostic scoring system for fetal alcohol syndrome. The score distribution curve for 301 children whose mothers imbibed during pregnancy was statistically significantly different from the score distribution curve for 163 children born to alcoholic mothers who remained abstinent during pregnancy and from the

From eco-affective narrowing to agency: acceptance, externalization, and efficacy in climate-related cognition.

Climate change is increasingly recognized not only as an environmental hazard but also as a condition that reorganizes perception, attention, future-oriented worry, moral appraisal, efficacy judgments, and decision-making. This conceptual analysis reframes eco-anxiety as a paradigmatic form of eco-affective cognition: a dynamic coupling of ecological threat salience, future simulation, responsibility appraisal, and efficacy appraisal under environmental uncertainty. The article develops the Acceptance-Externalization-Agency (AEA) model as a recursive, hypothesis-generating process framework sp

Factors Affecting Postoperative Satisfaction After Presbyopia-Correcting Intraocular Lens.

Presbyopia-correcting IOLs have revolutionized cataract surgery by enabling functional vision across multiple focal distances, thereby reducing dependence on spectacles. These lenses-ranging from multifocal to extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) and hybrid designs-incorporate advanced optical technologies to address the limitations of traditional monofocal IOLs. Despite their clinical promise, patient satisfaction remains variable, with a substantial subset experiencing postoperative visual discomfort. This review provides a comprehensive overview of presbyopia-correcting IOL technologies, detailin

De-escalating aggression in acute inpatient mental health settings: a behaviour change theory-informed, secondary qualitative analysis of staff and patient perspectives.

BACKGROUND: De-escalation is often advocated to reduce harm associated with violence and use of restrictive interventions, but there is insufficient understanding of factors that influence de-escalation behaviour in practice. For the first time, using behaviour change and implementation science methodology, this paper aims to identify the drivers that will enhance de-escalation in acute inpatient and psychiatric intensive care mental health settings. METHODS: Secondary analysis of 46 qualitative interviews with ward staff (n = 20) and patients (n = 26) informed by the Theoretical Domains Fram

Influence of COVID-19 Pandemic on Psychological Status: An Elaborate Review.

The 21st century has seen a spike in virus outbreaks. The Coronavirus infection in 2019, originating from Wuhan Province, China, spread across the world and was declared a pandemic. It led to the imposition of lockdowns in different parts of the world, as lockdowns were an effective and essential way to break down the cycle of infection. Physical distancing was the most significant measure to break the infection cycle. The Coronavirus infection outbreak has seen a concurrent spike in mental health risks worldwide. Mental health is considered to be one of the important components of overall hea

Effect of Sopoongsan on Skin Inflammation and Hyperlocomotion in Socially Isolated Mice with Atopic Dermatitis.

Psychological stress is a major exacerbating factor of atopic dermatitis (AD), a chronic inflammatory skin disease. Sopoongsan (SPS), a traditional herbal formula, has been indicated for the treatment of various skin disorders, including AD. This study investigated the effects of SPS on a 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene- (DNCB-) induced AD mice model exposed to social isolation (SI) stress. The severity of the AD symptoms and behavioral abnormalities was evaluated. SPS reduced the clinical skin score as evaluated with the SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index and suppressed the cutaneous infiltrat
