Congenital stationary night blindness with negative electroretinogram. A new classification.

An analysis of 64 patients with congenital stationary night blindness showed that all had essentially normal fundi. Electroretinography (ERG) showed a normal a wave with extremely reduced b wave (negative type) when recorded with a single bright white stimulus in the dark. We classified these patients into two groups based on the evaluation of rod ERG and/or psychophysical dark adaptation measured with an 11 degree test target at 15 degrees in the upper part of the retina. One group (35 patients) lacked rod function (complete type). Nine patients could not be classified. No pedigree showed a c

Histopathology of noise deafness.

The psychophysical effects of sound stimulation at increasing intensity include adaptation, temporary threshold shift, and permanent hearing loss. The mechanisms involved in permanent loss are direct mechanical destruction, following high intensity noise exposure, and metabolic decompensation with subsequent degeneration of sensory elements, following moderate intensity noise exposure. Both these cause their own pattern of cochlear histological abnormality, while the only morphological correlate to temporary threshold shift is an increase in the number and size of liposomes, mainly in the oute

Conceptual stress study model.

The conceptual stress study model (SSM) is basically a schematic representation of the key elements associated with the study of mechanical forces on the human operator. It has been a useful tool for systematically describing the scope and effects of vibration stress study efforts. The model structure is organized in a hierarchy of four levels established to reflect four different levels of description of human response complexity. In order of increasing complexity, these four classes of responses are biodynamic, physiological, psychophysical, and performance. The model also depicts the intern

Peripheral auditory processing in normal and abnormal ears: physiological considerations for attempts to compensate for auditory deficits by acoustic and electrical prostheses.

The processing of complex acoustic signals, such as speech, by the normal peripheral auditory system is described in terms of the properties of individual cochlear nerve fibres and the effects of lateral inhibition in the cochlear nucleus. The implications of the peripheral filtering of signals is indicated in psychophysical terms. In cochlear pathology, these filtering characteristics deteriorate, and the implications arising from the consequent deterioration in auditory frequency selectivity are outlined for the coding of loudness and for the analysis of speech. These considerations suggest

Behavioral Plasticity of Audiovisual Perception: Rapid Recalibration of Temporal Sensitivity but Not Perceptual Binding Following Adult-Onset Hearing Loss.

The ability to accurately integrate or bind stimuli from more than one sensory modality is highly dependent on the features of the stimuli, such as their intensity and relative timing. Previous studies have demonstrated that the ability to perceptually bind stimuli is impaired in various clinical conditions such as autism, dyslexia, schizophrenia, as well as aging. However, it remains unknown if adult-onset hearing loss, separate from aging, influences audiovisual temporal acuity. In the present study, rats were trained using appetitive operant conditioning to perform an audiovisual temporal o

Low- and high-level motion perception deficits in anisometropic and strabismic amblyopia: evidence from fMRI.

Maximum motion displacement (Dmax) is the largest dot displacement in a random-dot kinematogram (RDK) at which direction of motion can be correctly discriminated [Braddick, O. (1974). A short-range process in apparent motion. Vision Research, 14, 519-527]. For first-order RDKs, Dmax gets larger as dot size increases and/or dot density decreases. It has been suggested that this increase in Dmax reflects greater involvement of high-level feature-matching motion mechanisms and less dependence on low-level motion detectors [Sato, T. (1998). Dmax: Relations to low- and high-level motion processes.

Full-Field Stimulus Threshold: A Key Functional Outcome Measure in Retinal Diseases and Clinical Trials.

Full-field stimulus threshold (FST) testing is a psychophysical method used to assess global retinal function, particularly in patients with severe visual impairment where conventional perimetry is unreliable. This review explores the development, clinical protocols, and applications of FST in retinal diseases, with a focus on its role in inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs) such as Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). FST has emerged as a key functional outcome measure in clinical trials, particularly in evaluating novel gene therapies for IRDs. Its fixation-indepen

Cervical musculoskeletal impairments and pain sensitivity in migraine patients.

INTRODUCTION: Currently, examination of migraine patients relies on a clinical interview investigating symptoms characteristics. Despite this, to help identify distinct migraine subtypes and allow a personalized treatment approach, biomarkers to profile distinct migraine subtypes should be utilized in clinical and research settings. Therefore, there is a need to include physical and psychophysical examinations aimed at assessing migraine features quantitatively. PURPOSE: This paper aimed to discuss if increased pressure pain sensitivity and impaired cervical musculoskeletal function could be

Amblyopia: neural basis and therapeutic approaches.

Abnormalities in visual processing caused by visual deprivation or abnormal binocular interaction may induce amblyopia, which is characterized by reduced visual acuity. Occlusion therapy, the conventional treatment, requires special attention as occlusion of the fellow normal eye may reduce its visual acuity and impair binocular vision. Besides recovering visual acuity, some researchers have recommended restoration of stereoacuity and motor fusion and reverse suppression in order to prevent diplopia. Recent studies have documented that the amblyopic visual cortex has a normal complement of cel

Preclinical and human surrogate models of itch.

Pruritus, or simply itch, is a debilitating symptom that significantly decreases the quality of life in a wide range of clinical conditions. While histamine remains the most studied mediator of itch in humans, treatment options for chronic itch, in particular antihistamine-resistant itch, are limited. Relevant preclinical and human surrogate models of non-histaminergic itch are needed to accelerate the development of novel antipruritics and diagnostic tools. Advances in basic itch research have facilitated the development of diverse models of itch and associated dysaesthesiae. While experiment

Body size overestimation and its association with body mass index, body dissatisfaction, and drive for thinness in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Body size overestimation is a fundamental feature in anorexia nervosa (AN). There have been inconclusive findings about the extent to which this feature distinguishes psychopathology and some authors have argued that overestimation may be a function of lower body mass index (BMI). METHODS: We examine body size estimation accuracy and body dissatisfaction in 74 females with AN and 11 age-matched female controls using two well-established psychophysical procedures. RESULTS: Participants with AN overestimated their body size more and had greater body dissatisfaction than controls. S

Relationships between Pupil Diameter and Neuronal Activity in the Locus Coeruleus, Colliculi, and Cingulate Cortex.

Changes in pupil diameter that reflect effort and other cognitive factors are often interpreted in terms of the activity of norepinephrine-containing neurons in the brainstem nucleus locus coeruleus (LC), but there is little direct evidence for such a relationship. Here, we show that LC activation reliably anticipates changes in pupil diameter that either fluctuate naturally or are driven by external events during near fixation, as in many psychophysical tasks. This relationship occurs on as fine a temporal and spatial scale as single spikes from single units. However, this relationship is not

A dissociation between detection and identification of phobic stimuli: unconscious perception?

A psychophysical paradigm for investigating unconscious perception was used to test the hypothesis of dissociation between detection and identification of phobic stimuli. Spider-phobic and non-phobic participants were presented with masked images of spiders and flowers and an equal number of control stimuli in a random sequence. After each masked stimulus was flashed, participants first reported whether or not an object was presented. Then they identified each stimulus as either a spider or a flower, regardless of their prior detection response. Phobic participants identified both detected and

Exemplar selectivity reflects perceptual similarities in the human fusiform cortex.

While brain imaging studies emphasized the category selectivity of face-related areas, the underlying mechanisms of our remarkable ability to discriminate between different faces are less understood. Here, we recorded intracranial local field potentials from face-related areas in patients presented with images of faces and objects. A highly significant exemplar tuning within the category of faces was observed in high-Gamma (80-150 Hz) responses. The robustness of this effect was supported by single-trial decoding of face exemplars using a minimal (n = 5) training set. Importantly, exemplar tun

Body size over-estimation in women with anorexia nervosa is not qualitatively different from female controls.

Over-estimation of body size is a cardinal feature of anorexia nervosa (AN), usually revealed by comparing individuals who have AN with non-AN individuals, the inference being that over-estimation is pathological. We show that the same result can be reproduced by sampling selectively from a single distribution of performance in body size judgement by comparing low BMI individuals with normal BMI individuals. Over-estimation of body size in AN is not necessarily pathological and can be predicted by normal psychophysical biases in magnitude estimation. We confirm this prediction in a dataset fro

Oxygen consumption prediction models for individual and combination materials handling tasks.

An experiment was conducted to develop models to predict oxygen consumption of males and females engaged in common materials handling tasks including lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, (de)palletising and combination tasks involving lifting or lowering a box and carrying it a set distance and lifting or lowering it to the destination. Nineteen male and 19 female subjects participated in the study. A psychophysical approach was used to set load limits for individual subjects for the oxygen consumption protocol. The 8398 oxygen consumption values collected were entered into the initial regress

Functional brain imaging in the resting state and during activation in Alzheimer's disease. Implications for disease mechanisms involving oxidative phosphorylation.

In vivo brain imaging of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) using positron emission tomography (PET) demonstrates progressive reductions in resting-state brain glucose metabolism and blood flow in relation to dementia severity, more so in association than primary cortical regions. During cognitive or psychophysical stimulation, blood flow and metabolism in the affected regions can increase to the same extent in mildly demented AD patients as in age-matched controls, suggesting that energy delivery is not rate limiting. Activation declines with dementia severity, and is markedly reduced in
