OBJECTIVES: We sought to characterize psychosocial profiles of adaptation to neurofibromatosis (NF).
METHODS: Participants (N = 224) completed self-report measures of psychosocial functioning, including risk (i.e., perceived stress, depression, anxiety) and resiliency (i.e., gratitude, optimism, coping, social support, mindfulness, empathy). We used a TwoStep hierarchical cluster analysis to determine clusters reflecting adaptation to NF.
RESULTS: The analysis revealed two distinct groups, with the "Low Adaptation" group defined by high emotional distress and low resiliency (n = 130; 57% of …

Psychosocial adjustment was evaluated in different groups of children with craniofacial deformities in order to examine the relationships between symmetry, functional impairments, and social adaptation. Thirty patients, ages 6 through 16 years, were assessed using a battery of standard psychologic measures including Human Figure Drawing, Tasks of Emotional Adjustment, and Children's Depression Inventory. Parents and teachers also provided ratings of the children's functioning using the Child Behavior Checklist (parent and teacher forms). Scores on the outcome measures were summarized with desc

INTRODUCTION: The course of bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by relapse and remission periods. Although the symptoms show a significant and sometimes almost complete improvement during remission, the patients' functioning levels may be lower compared to the premorbid period. This study aimed to compare the functional levels between patients with BD during remission period and healthy controls and to evaluate the factors related to the functional status of the patients.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, functioning levels of the BD-I patients, who were in remission for three months

With the growing number of patients surviving cancer, there has been an increasing concern with their long-term adaptation. Given the large number of Hodgkin's disease survivors, it was possible to conduct a study of their psychosocial adaptation. Two hundred seventy-three survivors of advanced Hodgkin's disease were interviewed over the telephone concerning the impact of cancer upon their lives, in terms of their psychological, social, and sexual functioning. The level of psychological distress was elevated by one standard deviation above normal on the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), for both

Relationships between generalized tonic-clonic seizures and indicators of psychological functioning were evaluated in 94 adults with epilepsy who had exceptionally clear seizure histories. Patients were divided according to lifetime numbers of attacks and the presence or absence of a history of major motor status epilepticus. History of status epilepticus or history of more than 100 individual convulsions was associated with decreased functioning in all areas. Abilities were poorest for the group with a history of status, whereas emotional and psychosocial adjustment were worst in persons havi

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify psychosocial subtypes among gastric cancer (GC) patients and examine their associations with quality of life (QoL) and survival outcomes.
METHODS: A prospective cohort design was adopted, including 455 newly diagnosed GC patients admitted to the Union Hospital of Fujian Medical University between January 2023 and August 2024. Depressive symptoms and sleep quality were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), respectively. QoL was evaluated using the EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-STO22 questionnaires.

BACKGROUND: Body image and psychosocial functioning represent central challenges during adolescence and early adulthood. Malocclusion, defined as an irregularity in the alignment of the teeth, is known to negatively influence psychological outcomes. The current study aimed to elucidate the role of malocclusion, together with age, gender, and dental class, in body image and psychological functioning.
METHODS: A total of 126 participants aged from 12 to 19 years old (mean: 15.87, SD: 2.35, female participants: 52.4%, male participants: 47.6%) were recruited. Participants were visited at the Uni…

INTRODUCTION: As yet, a summary of research evidence concerning the efficacy of psychological treatment in male sexual dysfunction is lacking.
AIM: Our systematic review gives an overview of the efficacy of psychosocial interventions in all male sexual dysfunctions.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Main outcome measures included, for example, psychometrically validated scales, interviews, and clinical assessment by an independent rater. The efficacy of psychosocial interventions was measured, for example, by the frequency of and satisfaction with sexual activity and sexual functioning.
METHODS: The s

BACKGROUND: The Multidimensional Adolescent Functioning Scale (MAFS) is a 23-item, self-report questionnaire assessing psychosocial functioning in adolescents aged 12-17 years. It captures three domains of functioning: 'general functioning', 'family-related functioning', and 'peer-related functioning'. The original English version has good psychometric properties. The aim of the current paper was to translate the MAFS to Dutch and to investigate the psychometric properties of this translation.
METHODS: After translation, the Dutch MAFS was assessed in 397 adolescents aged 12-17 years, assesse…

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by alterations in social understanding and self-related experience that overlap with broader dimensions of psychosocial vulnerability. These domains are tightly interconnected, motivating the use of analytic approaches that can capture their organization as complex associations rather than as isolated dimensions. We applied network analysis to autistic adults (N = 156) and demographically matched neurotypical controls (N = 454). Gaussian graphical models were estimated using sum scores of psychosocial constructs, and networks were compared using

Stigma and discrimination remain significant challenges to the quality of life and social integration of individuals with chronic mental disorders, particularly schizophrenia, one of the most stigmatized conditions. The paradox of insight, in which greater awareness of illness correlates with poorer psychosocial outcomes in the presence of high internalized stigma, provides a critical framework for understanding these challenges. This study examined the moderation between insight and internalized stigma and its influence on psychosocial outcomes in 83 male participants diagnosed with psychotic

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to investigate psychosocial disability in relation to depressive symptom severity during the long-term course of unipolar major depressive disorder (MDD).
METHODS: Monthly ratings of impairment in major life functions and social relationships were obtained during an average of 10 years' systematic follow-up of 371 patients with unipolar MDD in the National Institute of Mental Health Collaborative Depression Study. Random regression models were used to examine variations in psychosocial functioning associated with 3 levels of depressive symptom severity a…

OBJECTIVE: Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is the most common chronic pediatric rheumatic disease. It is recognized that only reliance on clinical signs of disease outcome is inadequate for understanding the impact of illness and its treatment on child's life and functioning. There is a need for a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to children with arthritis which considers both physical and emotional functioning. This study investigated the psychosocial functioning of children and adolescent with JIA and the disease-related changes in their family.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 3…

Exposure to early life adversity (ELA) is hypothesized to sensitize threat-responsive neural circuitry. This may lead individuals to overestimate threat in the face of ambiguity, a cognitive-behavioral phenotype linked to poor mental health. The tendency to process ambiguity as threatening may stem from difficulty distinguishing between ambiguous and threatening stimuli. However, it is unknown how exposure to ELA relates to neural representations of ambiguous and threatening stimuli, or how processing of ambiguity following ELA relates to psychosocial functioning. The current fMRI study examin…
