Analysis of demographic data obtained from pathology records.

INTRODUCTION: Pathologists commonly analyse patient data obtained from pathology records. Such information is useful in that it might provide an indication of changing patterns of disease, or of the aetio-pathogenesis of a disease process, but such data is seldom standardised. AIM: To determine to what extent the lack of standardisation may influence the resultant data and the conclusions drawn. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pathology reports of all cysts diagnosed from 1994 to 2004 were retrieved. The diagnosis and site of the cyst, and the age, gender and race of patient were analysed. Comparativ

Nonsurgical management of a periapical cyst: a case report.

Large periapical lesions, regardless of whether they are granulomas, abscesses or cysts, are primarily caused by root canal infection. Thus the treatment protocol should be elimination of etiological factors in the root canal system rather than their product, apical true cyst. A 10 year old female patient reported to the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, Dr R Ahmed Dental College & Hospital, Kolkata, with the chief complaint of pain and swelling in relation to upper front fractured teeth. Clinical and radiological findings were suggestive of periapical radicular cyst. Non-sur…

Spinal cord compression by an arachnoid cyst: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Intradural extramedullary cysts are a rare cause of spinal cord compression. We present a case with slowly progressive radicular pain and gait disorder over several years, due to medullary compression by a giant cervico-thoracic arachnoid cyst. CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old man presented with progressive pain irradiating from the lower back to the waist and both legs over a period of 2 years. Neurological examination revealed a decreased sensation for pain, vibration, and proprioception below T7, without muscle weakness. Reflexes were increased in both lower extremities, with bilater

A survey of 4478 biopsy specimens of oral lesions.

A surgery of 4478 biopsy specimens in dental institute in India was carried out to compare and correlate results obtained from such studies … e malignant tumors were epithelial (almost 20:1) in origin. Cystic lesions included the most common radicular cyst (7.12%) and the rare hydatid cyst (one case reported). Gingival hyperplasia mainly due to local aetiology, constituted the 3rd largest group. The purpose of this report is to provide some information about the type and frequency of oral lesions usua …

Entrapped spinal nerve roots in a pseudomeningocoele as a complication of previous spinal surgery.

Pseudomeningocele is a rare but well recognised complication of lumbar surgery (microdiscectomy and laminectomy). Most of the patients tolerate the presence of the cyst well, however some present with back pain and spinal claudication, presumably due to neural compression. We report a case who presented following three operations (microdiscectomy, laminectomy and excision of a pseudomeningocele) with symptoms of spinal claudication and bilateral radicular pain. The cause of her pain was evident only at operation and was due to herniation of nerve roots through the dural defect.

Pathological conditions of the mandible: their effect on the radiographic appearance of the inferior dental (mandibular) canal.

Whilst the special anatomical features of the mandible may make radiographic comparison of jaw lesions with similar conditions in other bones more difficult, the changes that occur in respect to the mandibular canal and the teeth may in themselves aid diagnosis. Benign cysts and neoplasms generally cause a displacement of the mandibular canal, but its cortical plate remains intact, Severe infections and malignant tumours result in an irregular erosion of bone and loss of the sclerotic outlines of the canal.

Hemorrhagic synovial cyst: the possible role of initial trauma and subsequent microtrauma in its pathogenesis: case report.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Intraspinal synovial cysts are uncommon causes of back and radicular leg pain. Usually associated with degenerative spinal disease, these juxtafacet cysts are usually located in the lumbar spine and may rarely undergo intracystic hemorrhage. The pathogenesis of these cysts are unclear, and risk factors that may contribute to hemorrhagic complications are largely unknown. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old man presented to the clinic 4 months after a fall on ice with persistent back pain and lumbar radiculopathy. A week after the initial clinic consultation, the pa

Cervical spine arachnoid cyst complicated by spontaneous intracystic hemorrhage: Case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Spinal intradural extramedullary arachnoid cysts represent about 1-3% of all primary spinal space-occupying lesions often causing spinal cord and/or radicular nerve compression. Spontaneous intralesional hemorrhages are extremely rare and are typically found within intracranial arachnoid cysts. Here, a 55-year-old female presented with a spontaneous hemorrhage into a cervical spine arachnoid cyst warranting surgical intervention (i.e., fenestration/excision/occlusion). CASE DESCRIPTION: A 55-year-old female presented with 3 weeks of dull pain in the cervicothoracic region. She sub

Histoenzymological features of epithelial cells in lesions of oral mucosa in cysts and ameloblastomas of jaws.

A histoenzymological study was carried out on 41 tissue specimens removed at biopsy and for surgical operations of the following lesions: benign hyperkeratosis, lichen planus, severe epithelial dysplasia, carcinoma in situ, epidermoid carcinoma, radicular cyst, odontogenic keratocyst and ameloblastoma. The purpose of this study was to study some possibly significant variations in levels of activities of oxidative enzymes, diaphorases, acid phosphatases and Naphthol esterases in such lesions (normal oral mucosa and epidermis serving as controls). In the lesions of the oral mucosa, these histoen…

[The use of human lyophilized bone matrix gelatin in oral surgery (preliminary report)].

Clinical application of human freeze-dried bone matrix gelatin (BMG) in the bone-cysts is reported. The BMG is produced at the West Hungarian Regional Tissue Bank in Gyór under principles of the American and European Association of Tissue Banks. BMG was applied to fill bone cysts in maxilla and mandible. The BMG has many advantages in comparison to other materials in the management of maxillofacial cysts. Of 31 cases 28 primary bone-heating have been detected clinically assessed by X-ray and histologically in three cases there was secondary restoration. In the favourable courses very fast and

[Percutaneous dynamic interspinous stabilisation for the treatment of juxtafacet cysts of the lumbar spine: prospective study].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To present the authors' philosophy on the surgical treatment of juxtafacet cysts of the lumbosacral (LS) spine, with its primary aim of dynamic lumbar stabilisation with an interspinous implant, inserted by a minimally invasive approach, without concurrent exploration of the spinal canal and cyst removal. MATERIAL AND METHODS: During a 20-month period, ten patients aged between 25 and 70 years (average age, 53.2 years) were indicated for surgical treatment of a juxtafacet cyst by percutaneous insertion of an In-Space interspinous spacer without surgical exploration of th

Neurenteric cysts of the spine.

Neurenteric cysts account for 0.7-1.3% of spinal axis tumors. These rare lesions result from the inappropriate partitioning of the embryonic notochordal plate and presumptive endoderm during the third week of human development. Heterotopic rests of epithelium reminiscent of gastrointestinal and respiratory tissue lead to eventual formation of compressive cystic lesions of the pediatric and adult spine. Histopathological analysis of neurenteric tissue reveals a highly characteristic structure of columnar or cuboidal epithelium with or without cilia and mucus globules. Patients with symptomatic

Relationship between histological diagnosis and evolution of 70 periapical lesions at 12 months, treated by periapical surgery.

PURPOSE: To relate the histologic diagnosis and radiographic size with the prognosis of 70 biopsies obtained via periapical surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy biopsies obtained during periapical surgery were histologically analyzed following curettage of the tissue, establishing the diagnosis as either apical granuloma, radicular cyst, or scar tissue. The radiographic size of the lesion (area in mm(2)) before surgery and after 1 year of follow-up was measured. The evolution at 12 months after surgery was evaluated according to the criteria of von Arx and Kurt. A statistical study was mad…

Midline synovial and ganglion cysts causing neurogenic claudication.

Typically situated posterolateral in the spinal canal, intraspinal facet cysts often cause radicular symptoms. Rarely, the midline location of these synovial or ganglion cysts may cause thecal sac compression leading to neurogenic claudication or cauda equina syndrome. This article summarizes the clinical presentation, radiographic appearance, and management of three intraspinal, midline facet cysts. Three patients with symptomatic midline intraspinal facet cysts were retrospectively reviewed. Documented clinical visits, operative notes, histopathology reports, and imaging findings were invest

The Resistance of Succedaneous Teeth to Periapical Infection: A Series of Seven Cases.

Pediatric dental procedures are carried out largely to prevent the adverse effects of primary teeth infection on succedaneous teeth (ST). The existing literature on how and when periapical infection (PI) from primary teeth affect ST is conflicted. A series of seven case reports on PI (abscesses and radicular cysts) from primary molars, until the eruption of the premolars, have been illustrated. The resistance of ST to PI based on their developmental stages is also discussed.

Immunohistochemical study of apical periodontal cysts.

Periapical lesions, as well as periodontal disease, seems to have cyclic patterns of evolution. Periods of burst may be intercalated with periods of quiescence. Because keratinocyte division must occur during cyst growth, it is presumed that epithelium status could indicate the biological activity of radicular cysts (RCs). Th1 and Th2 are important heterogeneous stages of lymphocyte differentiation. Delayed-type hypersensitivity immune reactions are mediated by Th1 lymphocytes, whereas Th2 populations mediate some types of humoral immune response. Th2 lymphocytes are characterized by high expr…
