Splenic-gonadal fusion is an unusual congenital anomaly resulting from the fusion of the splenic and gonadal anlagen at approximately the sixth week of gestation. A 14-mo-old male presenting with signs and symptoms of testicular torsion underwent scrotal exploration, and ectopic splenic tissue was found adjacent to the left testis. We report three new cases of longitudinal femoral shaft fracture due to bone insufficiency and review the eight cases reported in the literature. The typical patient is a woman older than 65 years of age who present with mechanical pain in the thigh and/or groin. Palpation of the thigh may reproduce the pain. The diagnosis is often made late because the radiographs are normal initially. However, an early and consistent finding is increased radionuclide uptake along the femoral shaft. The effect of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (T/SMX, 30 mg/kg, PO, q 12 h for 6 weeks) on thyroid function was evaluated in 21 dogs with pyoderma and normal baseline serum thyroxine concentrations. The population mean serum thyroxine concentration, but not the population mean serum triiodothyronine concentration, was significantly decreased at the end of treatment. BACKGROUND: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare disorder characterized by hypophosphatemic osteomalacia, mainly caused by benign tumors with excessive secretion of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) and somatostatin receptor expression. Although complete excision is recommended, reports on treatment strategies for anatomically challenging surgical cases are lacking. We report an unresectable case of FGF23 transmitted tumor in the cervical vertebrae causing myelopathy, which was treated with surgical decompression combined with radionuclide therapy.
