Consistency in North Korean Medical Academic Research Topics During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Text Mining Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic triggered a global shift in medical research priorities, with increased emphasis on infectious disease response and public health. However, little is known about whether similar changes occurred in the People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), a country with limited transparency and access to health data. This study aimed to assess thematic changes in North Korean medical academic research before and during the COVID-19 pandemic by analyzing article titles using text mining techniques. METHODS: We extracted 8,818 paper titles from s

Well-being in pain questionnaire: A novel, reliable, and valid tool for assessment of the personal well-being in individuals with chronic low back pain.

BACKGROUND: Well-being is closely related to health, recovery, and longevity. Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMP) is a major health challenge in the general population, which can have a negative effect on subjective well-being. The ability to identify patients' well-being protective factors, including psychological, social, and lifestyle components, can help guide the therapeutic process in the management of CMP. Recognizing the absence of a dedicated well-being questionnaire, tailored specifically for CMP populations, an 11-item well-being in pain questionnaire (WPQ) was developed. OBJECTIVES

Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation for Adult Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia.

Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is potentially curative for patients with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML); however, few data exist regarding prognostic factors and transplantation outcomes. We performed this retrospective study to identify prognostic factors for post-transplantation outcomes. The CMML-specific prognostic scoring system (CPSS) has been validated in subjects receiving nontransplantation therapy and was included in our study. From 2001 to 2012, 209 adult subjects who received HCT for CMML were reported to the Center for International Blood and Marrow Tr

Early visual alterations in individuals at-risk of Alzheimer's disease: a multidisciplinary approach.

BACKGROUND: The earliest pathological features of Alzheimer's disease (AD) appear decades before the clinical symptoms. The pathology affects the brain and the eye, leading to retinal structural changes and functional visual alterations. Healthy individuals at high risk of developing AD present alterations in these ophthalmological measures, as well as in resting-state electrophysiological activity. However, it is unknown whether the ophthalmological alterations are related to the visual-related electrophysiological activity. Elucidating this relationship is paramount to understand the mechani

The challenge of controlling an auditory BCI in the case of severe motor disability.

BACKGROUND: The locked-in syndrome (LIS), due to a lesion in the pons, impedes communication. This situation can also be met after some severe brain injury or in advanced Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). In the most severe condition, the persons cannot communicate at all because of a complete oculomotor paralysis (Complete LIS or CLIS). This even prevents the detection of consciousness. Some studies suggest that auditory brain-computer interface (BCI) could restore a communication through a « yes-no» code. METHODS: We developed an auditory EEG-based interface which makes use of voluntary

Re/producing the Pediatric Concussion Discourse in clinical rehabilitation practice.

PURPOSE: In the field of pediatric concussion, little to no scholarship has examined how clinical practice is shaped by patterned ways of thinking, talking about, and coming to understand concussion and young people (or "discourses of concussion in young people"). In this paper, we examine the ways in which one such discourse, the Pediatric Concussion Discourse (PCD), shapes how young people with concussion, their parents, and clinicians can think about, act in relation to, and experience concussion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This critical rehabilitation research is informed by the post-structur

Prevalence of Musculoskeletal Disorders for Nurses in Hospitals, Long-Term Care Facilities, and Home Health Care: A Comprehensive Review.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and reported injuries for nurses and nursing aides. BACKGROUND: Nurses and nursing aides suffer from work-related pain and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Although there have been a plethora of studies on MSDs, an overall understanding of the prevalence of MSDs and pain can lead to better prioritization of research needs with respect to the health care industry. METHOD: A total of 132 articles on prevalence of MSD pain and injuries were included in the review. All articles were published in peer-review

"Like a Prisoner": Stories From Evergreen Manor.

Stigmatizing accounts of dementia emphasize tragedy, constructing people living with dementia as 'unagentic' and 'Ошибка' aging subjects, and cognitive changes as a loss of self. This stigma has significant consequences for people living with dementia in all aspects of their lives. For example, coupled with the biomedical culture in many long-term care settings, recreation and leisure is often focused on targeting therapeutic goals or managing "difficult behaviours," rather than on life enrichment. A social citizenship framework challenges these deficit-based approaches by recognizing people l

Is "sky" bluer than "grass" is green? Word-color associations dataset for cognitive science.

Color plays a fundamental role in cognition, influencing perception, memory, and language processing. Although many studies have used word-color associations to examine cognitive processes, the selection of color-associated stimuli has often been arbitrary and rarely validated through independent behavioral measures. The current study developed and validated a dataset of color-associated object words for cognitive research. In Experiment 1, 298 participants provided subjective assessments for 143 words selected from 124 previous studies. For each word, participants indicated the most strongly

An In vitro Study of the Isolation of Candidal Strains in Patients at Increased Risk of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: OSCC stands as a prominent oral malignancy that develops because of lifestyle behavior and microbial activity. The pathogenesis of OSCC receives attention through modern research since Candida species reportedly contribute to the development of OSCC through inflammatory responses and nitrosamine generation and epithelial tissue malformation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty subjects participated in this in vitro study, which was separated into two distinct groups: Group A with 30 patients who had high OSCC risk oral lesions (leukoplakia and erythroplakia) and Group B which included 30

Clubfoot from past to the present: A bibliometric analysis with global productivity and research trends.

Clubfoot, a common congenital abnormality, affects the lower extremities; however, the literature search revealed no bibliometric research on this subject. Thus, we aimed to holistically analyze scientific articles and reveal global productivity and trend issues. This study statistically analyzed 1417 published articles on clubfoot (1980-2021) from the Web of Science database. Bibliometric network visualization maps were created to reveal trend topics, citation analysis, and cross-country collaborations. The analysis was conducted using Spearman correlation analysis. Subjective Well-Being and Active Life Expectancy in Japan: Evidence From a Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Existing research has suggested that older adults in Japan enjoy phenomenal physical health status, but they have poor subjective well-being (SWB). Limited empirical evidence exists, however, on how physical health and SWB intersect and are linked to the lives of older men and women in Japan. Using the concept of health expectancy, this study examines the role of SWB, as measured by life satisfaction, in the mortality and morbidity experiences of Japanese adults aged 65 years and older. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used the nationally representative Nihon Univers

Playfulness and prenatal alcohol exposure: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: South Africa carries a high burden of alcohol abuse. The effects of maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy are most pronounced in poor, rural communities. Earlier research suggests that children with prenatal alcohol exposure have poor social behaviour; however, to date, no research has investigated their playfulness. This study investigated the differences in playfulness of children with and without prenatal alcohol exposure. METHODS: Grade one learners with a positive history of prenatal alcohol exposure (n = 15) and a reference group without a positive history of pre

Enablers to successful patient and public involvement in Palliative Care Research: Qualitative perspectives of public members and Program Coordinators.

BACKGROUND: Despite policy and health service imperatives for public involvement to be embedded within palliative care research, this practice is not commonplace. Few empirical studies have sought to explore and evaluate models of public involvement for palliative care. AIM: To explore experiences of public involvement within palliative care, and to identify enablers for successful models of involvement. DESIGN: An exploratory qualitative design was utilized. Semi-structured interviews were conducted via zoom or telephone, and interview transcripts were subjected to inductive thematic analys

Psychosocial Outcomes of Pain and Pain Management in Adults with Osteogenesis Imperfecta: A Qualitative Study.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder characterized by bone fragility and fractures, short stature, dental abnormalities, hearing loss, scoliosis, and chronic pain. Despite a growing literature on the functional outcomes of OI, limited research has explicitly examined the psychosocial outcomes of pain within OI. Adults with OI (N = 15) were interviewed to understand pain-related experiences through a thematic analysis of semi-structured interview data. Research team members, genetic research experts, and OI clinicians developed an interview guide focused on topics related to pain

Pain is Associated With Increased Physical and Psychosocial Impairment in Youth With a History of Burn Injuries.

Burn injuries are significantly painful and associated with physical and psychological impairment. However, little research to-date has examined the potential role of the subjective experience of pain in either physical or psychological impairment in this population. This may be particularly important to examine, given that the pain experience can often be a significant barrier to recovery in other pediatric populations. The current study examined the cross-sectional and predictive relationships between patient-reported experience of pain (operationalized as PROMIS pain interference and self-r

Assessment of Abuse Potential-Related Effects of Oral Dried Kratom Leaf Powder in Healthy Normal Participants Following Single and Multiple Daily Doses.

Kratom is increasingly used in the United States for energy and self-management of pain and mood. While its active alkaloid, mitragynine, has partial μ-opioid receptor agonist activity, clinical data on its abuse potential remain limited. This study evaluated abuse-related outcomes following single and multiple doses of dried kratom leaf powder in healthy kratom-naive adults in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Healthy participants (n = 116) received a single oral dose or 15 consecutive daily doses of Mitra-Leaf kratom capsules (4 cohorts: 500-4000 mg dried leaf powder; equ
