Skin and hair pigmentation variation in Island Melanesia.

Skin and hair pigmentation are two of the most easily visible examples of human phenotypic variation. Selection-based explanations for pigmentation variation in humans have focused on the relationship between melanin and ultraviolet radiation, which is largely dependent on latitude. In this study, skin and hair pigmentation were measured as the melanin (M) index, using narrow-band reflectance spectroscopy for 1,135 individuals from Island Melanesia. Overall, the results show remarkable pigmentation variation, given the small geographic region surveyed. This variation is discussed in terms of d

Sociodemographic predictors of health-related quality of life dimensions in hypertensive patients: A cross-sectional study in a Ghanaian Municipal Hospital.

Hypertension is a major public health concern worldwide and can adversely affect multiple aspects of quality of life (QoL). Sociodemographic factors may influence how adults experience QoL, yet evidence from Ghana remains limited. This study examined the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and QoL across physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains among adults with hypertension attending Mampong Ashanti Municipal Hospital. A cross-sectional analytical design was employed among 330 hypertensive adults, using a simple random sampling technique from the outpatient

A PASS 3 evaluation of community residences in Wales.

PASS 3 was used to evaluate 14 residential services for people with mental retardation. Residents had a broad range of abilities. Size of residences ranged from one to seven residents. PASS scores were generally associated with both resident's ability level and smaller size of living unit. Overall, the residences were shown to be well-located and reasonably home-like. However, residence personnel tended to lack organized means and competencies to promote resident development and experience. Administrative practices were also weak. Attention must be given to factors other than residence size, l

Neighborhood socioeconomic opportunity and clinical presentation, recurrence, and longitudinal treatment intensity in adolescent pilonidal disease.

BACKGROUND: Pilonidal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of adolescence requiring sustained outpatient management, yet the impact of neighborhood-level social determinants of health on disease course and treatment intensity remains unclear. METHOD: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adolescents evaluated for pilonidal disease at a high-volume specialty clinic from 2019 to 2024. Residential addresses were geocoded and linked to census tract-level socioeconomic opportunity using the California Healthy Places Index (HPI). HPI was analyzed continuously, by quintiles, and using

Differential expression of lymphocyte markers by neighborhood opportunity among US adults: Insights from the Midlife in the United States study.

Social and environmental neighborhood characteristics play important roles in promoting opportunities for healthy living. However, access to quality opportunities vary depending on where people live, largely due to structural injustices perpetuating inequities. Though the impacts of such injustices on physiological health outcomes are well-studied, little is known about how the underlying biological mechanisms facilitating these health outcomes may be influenced by constructs of neighborhood opportunity. To further investigate the relationship between neighborhood opportunity and immunoregulat

Neighborhood green space and childhood obesity during the COVID-19 pandemic: The role of socioeconomic status and urbanicity.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity remains a major global public health issue, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Neighborhood green space represents a modifiable environmental factor, but its impact during pandemic disruptions and across socioeconomic and urban contexts remains limited. This study aimed to assess whether neighborhood green space exposure was associated with childhood obesity risk during the COVID-19 pandemic and explored effect modification by socioeconomic status (SES) and urbanicity. METHODS: A longitudinal open cohort study was conducted using electronic health records from

Neighborhood greenspace and brain imaging outcomes in older adults without dementia from three US Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers.

Although mounting evidence supports that neighborhood greenspaces (e.g., trees and parks) may benefit cognitive health in older age, fewer studies have investigated benefits to brain health measured via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We used data on 892 older adults without dementia from three Alzheimer's Disease Research Centers, examining whether neighborhood greenspace (i.e., greenness and percentage park space) is associated with white matter hyperintensity (WMH) and hippocampal volumes from MRI. We also examined whether associations varied by sex, racial group, urbanicity, or apolipopr

Symptom severity, neighborhood crime, and neural correlates of reappraisal in patients with major depression and social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive reappraisal deficits are a transdiagnostic risk factor for major depressive disorder (MDD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) and are observed in patients with these disorders at the neural level. Preliminary research suggests less activation of prefrontal regions during reappraisal (vs. viewing) of negative stimuli associates with overall symptom severity in patients with MDD or SAD, however, this is not reliably observed across studies. Consistent with research showing that reappraisal may only be adaptive when employed to cope with uncontrollable adversity, this study s

Context Matters: Mapping Social Determinants of Health and Physical Function in Older People with HIV Using Geolocation Data.

Older people with HIV (PWH) experience higher rates of physical function decline and frailty than those without HIV. This study aimed to examine the association between physical function measures and geolocated social determinants of health (SDOH) in two geographically distinct groups of older sedentary PWH. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using baseline data from a randomized exercise trial (the High-Intensity Exercise Study to Attenuate Limitations and Train Habits in Older Adults with HIV; HEALTH) of 120 sedentary PWH aged ≥ 50 years from two sites (Aurora/Denver, Colorado [CO], and

Associations of perceived neighborhood factors and Alzheimer's disease polygenic score with cognition: Evidence from the Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND: We examined the relationships between neighborhood characteristics, cumulative genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease (polygenic scores for Alzheimer's disease), and cognitive function using data from the Health and Retirement Study (2008-2020, age > 50). METHODS: Baseline perceived neighborhood characteristics were combined into a subjective neighborhood disadvantage index. Cognitive function was assessed at baseline and measured biennially over a 10-year follow-up period. Analyses were stratified by genetic ancestry. Cox proportional hazard models analyzed associations between nei

The Influence of Neighborhood on Infant Parasympathetic Nervous System Development.

The adaptive calibration model (ACM) asserts that the stress response system, including the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), conditionally adapts to one's environment. In infancy, the proximal context of parental influences (e.g., maternal depression/anxiety) affects the development of the infant stress response system. In contrast, the relation between broader contexts, such as neighborhood environment, and infant PNS development is less well understood, despite the impact neighborhoods may have on maternal mental health and youth outcomes. The present study bridges prior research examin

Neighborhood Income Disparities in Unplanned Hospital Admission and In-Hospital Outcomes Among Children with Congenital Heart Disease.

Unplanned admissions are associated with worse clinical outcomes and increased hospital resource utilization. We hypothesized that children with congenital heart disease (CHD) from lower-income neighborhoods have higher rates of unplanned hospital admissions and greater resource utilization. Utilizing the Kids' Inpatient Database (2016 and 2019), we included children under 21 years of age with CHD, excluding newborn hospitalizations. CHD cases were categorized into simple lesions, complex biventricular lesions, and single ventricle lesions. Admissions were classified as surgical or non-surgica
