Agrypnia excitata.

Agrypnia (from the Greek: to chase sleep) excitata (AE) is a syndrome characterized by loss of sleep and permanent motor and autonomic hyper … . Agrypnia excitata is due to an intralimbic disconnection releasing the hypothalamus and brainstem reticular formation from cortico-limbic inhibitory control. This pathogenetic mechanism is visceral thalamus degeneration in FI, whereas it may depend on autoantibodies blocking voltage-gated potassium (VGK) channels within the limbic system in MS, and in the sudden ch …

Current treatments for sleep disturbances in individuals with dementia.

Sleep disturbances are widespread among older adults. Degenerative neurologic disorders that cause dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, exacerbate age-related changes in sleep, as do many common comorbid medical and psychiatric conditions. Medications used to treat chronic illness and insomnia have many side effects that can further disrupt sleep and place patients at risk for injury. This article reviews the neurophysiology of sleep in normal aging and sleep changes associated with common dementia subtypes and comorbid conditions. Current pharmacologic and nonpharmac

Novel combination strategies to repair the injured mammalian spinal cord.

Due to the varied and numerous changes in spinal cord tissue following injury, successful treatment for repair may involve strategies combin … ignificant increases in white matter sparing, in myelinated axons in the implant, and in responding reticular formation and red and raphe nuclei, and a significant correlation between the number of serotonergic fibers and improvement in locomotion). Thus, in two injury paradigms, these combination strategies as well as others studied in our laboratory have been found …

Persistent Epithelial Defect After Bullae Rupture With Netarsudil.

A 61-year-old male patient presented with reticular epithelial edema (REE) and bullae in the inferonasal quadrant of the right eye (RE) one month after initiation of topical netarsudil 0.02%. The findings were confirmed on anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). Following discontinuation of the medication, the epithelial edema resolved over a period of six weeks. Nine months later, the patient re-presented with redness, increased lacrimation, and blurred vision in the RE, occurring two weeks after re-initiation of topical netarsudil 0.02%. Slit-lamp examination revealed REE wit

Fibrinogen Immunostaining in a Single Case of an Earlobe Keloid: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Abnormal scars, such as keloids and hypertrophic scars, are fibroproliferative disorders that develop following wounds or infections extending into the reticular dermis, with cutaneous mechanical tension considered an aggravating factor. The detailed mechanisms underlying keloid formation and patterns of extension remain unclear. Recent studies suggest that microvascular hyperpermeability, potentially resulting from structural alterations in the vascular basement membrane and increased microvascular density in the superficial dermis, may contribute to keloid development. We report a single cas

[Research progress on the impact and mechanism of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) components in atherosclerosis].

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a prevalent clinical vascular condition and serves as a pivotal pathological foundation for cardiovascular diseases. Understanding the pathogenesis of AS has significant clinical and societal implications, aiding in the development of targeted drugs. Neutrophils, the most abundant leukocytes in circulation, assume a central role during inflammatory responses and closely interact with AS, which is a chronic inflammatory vascular disease. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are substantial reticular formations discharged by neutrophils that serve as an immune defense me…

15 Years of Intermittent Therapy With Hydroxychloroquine Without Any Loss of Efficacy in Reticular Erythematous Mucinosis.

Reticular erythematous mucinosis (REM) is a rare dermatological condition characterized by erythematous, reticulated patches and plaques with a slightly infiltrated appearance. REM is classified among cutaneous mucinoses, which are characterized by the accumulation of mucin in the subcutaneous tissues, leading to the formation of characteristic reticulated patches on the skin. The pathogenesis is still debated, but the association with sun exposure seems to play an important role. We present the case of a 54-year-old individual with a history of recurrent erythema on the chest and back. The pa

Comprehensive Morphometric Analysis of the Rhomboid Fossa: Implications for Safe Entry Zones in Brainstem Surgery.

BACKGROUND: The rhomboid fossa (RF) is a crucial anatomical region in brainstem surgery as it contains essential structures such as the reticular formation and cranial nerve nuclei. This study aimed to provide a detailed understanding of the complex microsurgical anatomy of the RF, which is vital for the safe execution of neurosurgical procedures. METHODS: Morphometric analysis was conducted on 45 adult human brainstems preserved in 10% formalin. Under 20× magnification, 13 linear measurements were performed using a millimeter graph to identify key anatomical landmarks. RESULTS: The RF measu…

Embryonic differentiation of intestine in Indian goats (Capra hircus).

The present study focused on identifying knowledge gaps in scientific literature for developmental anatomy and future fetal-programming researches on goats. The aim of this study was to observe the sequential growth and the development of the intestine from stage of formation of preliminary digestive tube to the differentiation of various segments during early prenatal life in Indian goats. The developing digestive tube was first witnessed on the 23rd day of gestation histologically and from 25 days of gestation onwards, it became observable grossly under stereozoom microscope. The further sta

Pulmonary sarcoidosis complicated by rheumatoid arthritis in a patient presenting with progressive fibrosing interstitial lung disease and treated with nintedanib: a case report and literature review.

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disease with an unknown etiology and is characterized by the formation of noncaseating granulomas in the affected organs. We present the case of a 69-year-old male Japanese patient with bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy on chest radiographs for more than 10 years, left without further investigation. The patient reported no clinical symptoms. Chest computed tomography revealed ground-glass opacities and reticular shadows in both lungs, along with bilateral hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Lymphocytosis was observed in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Pathological e

Microsurgical anatomy of safe entry zones on the ventrolateral brainstem: a morphometric study.

Surgery of the brainstem is challenging due to the complexity of the area with cranial nerve nuclei, reticular formation, and ascending and descending fibers. Safe entry zones are required to reach the intrinsic lesions of the brainstem. The aim of this study was to provide detailed measurements for anatomical landmark zones of the ventrolateral surface of the human brainstem related to previously described safe entry zones. In this study, 53 complete and 34 midsagittal brainstems were measured using a stainless caliper with an accuracy of 0.01 mm. The distance between the pontomesencephalic a…

The protein tyrosine phosphatase RPTPζ/phosphacan is critical for perineuronal net structure.

Perineuronal nets (PNNs) are conspicuous neuron-specific substructures within the extracellular matrix of the central nervous system that have generated an explosion of interest over the last decade. These reticulated structures appear to surround synapses on the cell bodies of a subset of the neurons in the central nervous system and play key roles in both developmental and adult-brain plasticity. Despite the interest in these structures and compelling demonstrations of their importance in regulating plasticity, their precise functional mechanisms remain elusive. The limited mechanistic under

The Neuroanatomy of the Reticular Nucleus Locus Coeruleus in Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) features the accumulation of β-amyloid and Tau aggregates, which deposit as extracellular plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), respectively. Neuronal Tau aggregates may appear early in life, in the absence of clinical symptoms. This occurs in the brainstem reticular formation and mostly within Locus Coeruleus (LC), which is consistently affected during AD. LC is the main source of forebrain norepinephrine (NE) and it modulates a variety of functions including sleep-waking cycle, alertness, synaptic plasticity, and memory. The iso-dendritic nature o…
