Disability and health after replantation or revascularisation in the upper extremity in a population in southern Sweden - a retrospective long time follow up.

BACKGROUND: Replantation in the upper extremity is a well-established microsurgical procedure. Many have reported patients' satisfaction and … e (p = 0.005) in the former. Twenty percent changed work and 10% retired early. Patients with early retirement were significantly older, had a more severe injury, worse disability, quality of life and functional outcome. Median DASH score was low [11.4 (0-88.6)] and correlated with severity of injury. Abnormal cold sensitivity (CISS > 50) was seen in 51/209 …

Primary tracheobronchial amyloidosis.

Tracheobronchial amyloidosis is an uncommon localized form of amyloidosis, characterized by amyloid deposits restricted to the trachea, main bronchi and segmental bronchi. We present the case of a retired 67-year-old man with long-term progressive dyspnea, wheezing and chest pain. A diagnosis of tracheobronchial amyloidosis was made after the third fiberoptic bronchoscopy and histological confirmation through Congo red staining of tissue samples.

Sex differences in patterns of self-reported psychopathology in the married elderly.

Administered to 106 married male and female residents of a retirement community the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) form of the SCL-90. Although no difference was found between males and females on an overall index of psychological distress, a discriminant function analysis indicated that three (Anxiety, Interpersonal Sensitivity, and Paranoid Ideation) of the nine scales provided maximum separation of the two groups. Results supported the conclusion that with marital status, education, and health controlled, male and female elderly Ss show distinct patterns of distress.

Significant life Events and PTSD in Elderly World War II Veterans.

The authors reviewed clinic records of 20 WWII veterans referred for evaluation of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Twelve patients qualified for a diagnosis of PTSD, and eight reported several symptoms of PTSD. The most frequent symptoms were insomnia (80%), nightmares (75%), and irritability (65%). Fourteen veterans had an exacerbation of symptoms occurring with life stresses, including retirement, deteriorating health, or death of a loved one. The authors conclude that elderly WWII combat veterans should be monitored for changes in PTSD symptoms when significant stressful life events o…

Longitudinal Characterization of Pain Interference and Influential Factors in Former National Football League (NFL) Players Over a 19-Year Period: An NFL-LONG Study.

Previous studies on pain experiences in retired contract sport athletes have been cross-sectional, leaving gaps in our understanding of the evolution of pain interference (PI) and factors that influence trajectories decades after sport discontinuation. This study investigated the longitudinal course of PI in former male National Football League (NFL) players over a 19-year period following sport discontinuation and examined factors influencing overall levels and trajectories of PI. Former NFL players completed health surveys in 2001, 2010, and 2019, with PI ratings measured using the 36-Item S

Associations between sarcopenic obesity and risk of cardiovascular disease: A population-based cohort study among middle-aged and older adults using the CHARLS.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that sarcopenia was associated with a high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Nevertheless, little is known about the associations between sarcopenic obesity/possibly sarcopenic obesity and the risk of CVD among senior and middle-aged adults. METHODS: Utilizing the nationally representative data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), a sum of 7703 individuals aged at least 45 years were divided into four groups. The effects of sarcopenic obesity and possibly sarcopenic obesity on CVD were calculated using Cox proport…

[Occupational diseases in forestry workers].

Inquiries and medical examinations provided a considerable amount of informations on the state of health of forest workers in Switzerland. A large number of forest workers suffers from back troubles (55%) and other health problems concerning the muscular-skeletal system. These are obvious reasons for giving up forestry work before reaching the retiring age limit. Complaints about overfatigue and overall body degeneration are frequent and point to the necessity of further investigations. Vibration induced "White Fingers" are frequent amount forest workers (46%). They are closely related to tota

Cardiometabolic multimorbidity, lifestyle behaviours, and cognitive function: a multicohort study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the effect of lifestyle factors on cognitive decline related to cardiometabolic multimorbidity. We aimed to examine the association between cardiometabolic multimorbidity and cognitive decline, and the role of lifestyle factors in this association. METHODS: We did a pooled multi-cohort study using pooled data from four cohort studies (the Health and Retirement Study; the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing; the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe; and the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study) across 14 countries. Eligible participants…

Adverse childhood experiences and multidimensional frailty transitions in later life: evidence from three national aging cohorts.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with distinct multidimensional frailty patterns and transitions across frailty states in later life. METHODS: We used harmonized longitudinal data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, the Health and Retirement Study, and the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The analytic sample included 10,643 adults aged ≥50 years who were free of multidimensional frailty at baseline. ACEs were assessed across eight childhood adversity domains and modeled as binary, categorical, and continuous exposures…

An exploration of sources of bias in population models of cognitive aging and accelerated decline: a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Epidemiologic models used to model cognitive aging and decline often rely on a linear random slopes model, although clinicians rely on accelerated cognitive decline for diagnosis. This study examined the extent to which accelerated versus linearized models of cognitive decline are biased by study design and analytic choices. METHODS: Data on participants of the Health and Retirement Study (1998-2019) who completed cognitive monitoring and lacked cognitive functional limitations or a history of stroke at baseline were included. Episodic memory was measured as the outcome at each ti…

Dynamic frailty exposure and cognitive aging trajectories: A multicohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The cognitive implications of longitudinal frailty exposure remain unclear. We examined associations of baseline frailty status, two-wave frailty change, and mean frailty burden with annual cognitive change and cognitive aging trajectories. METHODS: We analyzed data from three nationally representative cohorts: the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, and Health and Retirement Study (n = 19,586). Primary linear mixed-effects models used exposure-by-time interactions to estimate differences in annual global and domain-specific cogn…

Higher cystatin C, but not creatinine, predicts frailty risk in individuals with normal kidney function.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the associations of creatinine and cystatin C with frailty risk in individuals with normal kidney function, using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). METHODS: We used CKD-EPI to estimate glomerular filtration rate based on serum creatinine (eGFRscr) and cystatin C (eGFRcysc), respectively, and an eGFR ≥60 was considered "normal kidney function". Frailty was assessed using a frailty index derived from clinical and functional measures. Cox proportional hazards models were used to eval…
