Negating in order to be negative: the relationship between depressive rumination, message content and negation processing.

The current research explored the interaction between brooding, a maladaptive subtype of depressive rumination, and content valence, in a basic cognitive process of negation. Following presentation of positive and negative trait descriptions, phrased affirmatively or negatively (e.g., "Liz is/is not a smart person"), participants' associations were examined for congruency with the schema (e.g., "smart") or with its negation (e.g., "stupid"). We predicted that brooders' processing of negations would enhance the accessibility of negative content. Consistent with our prediction, brooders generate

The psychological impact of peer victimization: exploring social-cognitive mediators of depression.

Although the association between peer victimization and depression is well established (Hawker & Boulton, 2000; Nansel et al., 2001), little research has examined the processes whereby victimization may lead to depression. This study examined the social-cognitive processes that mediate the relationship between peer victimization and depression. A questionnaire measuring peer victimization, depression, depression rumination, self efficacy to enlist support, and collective school efficacy to stop peer aggression at two time points during one school year was completed by 1167 secondary school chi

Physiological concomitants of perseverative cognition: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Rumination about the past and worries about the future (perseverative cognition) are extremely common, although pervasive and distressing, dysfunctional cognitive processes. Perseverative cognition is not only implicated in psychological health, contributing to mood worsening and psychopathology but, due to its ability to elicit prolonged physiological activity, is also considered to play a role in somatic health. Although there is emerging evidence that such negative and persistent thoughts have consequences on the body, this association has not yet been quantified. The aim of this study was

A confirmatory factor analysis of a cognitive model of COVID-19 related anxiety and depression.

The mental health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been significant, with many regions across the globe reporting significant increases in anxiety, depression, trauma, and insomnia. This study aims to validate a potential cognitive model of maintenance factors of COVID-19 related distress by examining psychological predictors of distress, and their goodness-of-fit as a coherent model. Participants from the general population (n = 555) were recruited using a cross-sectional on-line survey design, assessing Demographic factors, Anxiety, Depression, Loneliness, COVID-19 related distress, Traum

Examining the association between perceived racism and sleep quality: The mediating role of rumination.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep problems and disorders are associated with various health problems, such as heart disease and cancer. Black Americans report higher rates of poor sleep quality and health disorders than other racial and ethnic groups. Research suggests perceived racism can influence sleep difficulties; however, the mechanisms connecting racism to sleep difficulties are not fully understood. Rumination, a form of perseverative cognition in which individuals repeatedly focus on negative emotions and their causes and consequences, can affect sleep quality. This cross-sectional study examined whe

Short-term effects of activating cognitive control processes on emotional interference: an experimental study.

Cognitive control is crucial for effective emotion regulation. This study investigates whether engaging cognitive control reduces emotional interference using a task frequently employed in cognitive control training procedures. In this preregistered experiment, 80 participants completed tasks varying in cognitive control demands. Emotional interference was measured by changes in reaction times in a simple discrimination task following the presentation of emotional images. Self-report data on rumination, emotion regulation difficulties, and mental distress were collected to explore moderation e

The effect of rumination on problematic mobile phone use among female freshmen: A moderated mediation model.

Based on the Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution model and the risk-buffering model, the current study explored how and when rumination increases problematic mobile phone use (PMPU) among Chinese female freshmen. Specifically, we investigated the underlying mechanism of PMPU by testing a moderated mediation model in which solitude capacity moderated the mediating role of fear of missing out (FoMO) in the relationship between rumination and PMPU. A sample of 1,389 female freshmen in China, with a mean age of 19.68 years (SD = 2.63), was surveyed using the Rumination Response Scale,

The mediating role of rumination between fear of disease progression and sleep disturbance in melanoma patients: a dual-perspective analysis based on person-centered and variable-centered approaches.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have confirmed that melanoma patients often experience intense fear of disease progression, with a significantly higher incidence of sleep disorders compared to the general population. However, the relationship between these two factors and the underlying psychological mechanisms remain unclear. To address the gaps in previous research, the present study employs a dual-methodological approach, incorporating both person-centered and variable-centered strategies, to comprehensively examine the association and heterogeneity between fear of disease progression and slee

Longitudinal Associations Between Problematic Pornography Use and Types of Rumination.

Transdiagnostic approaches are considered essential for assessing psychopathology, as they cut across a wide range of mental disorders. These features significantly contribute to the development and maintenance of mental health issues, with rumination being an important transdiagnostic construct. Although previous studies have demonstrated a positive link between problematic online behaviors and rumination, no study has examined the association between problematic pornography use (PPU) and rumination. Hence, we aimed to examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between PPU and

Differential Association of Spirituality and Religiosity With Rumination: Implications for the Treatment of Depression.

Recent studies have shown that religiosity (R) is associated with lower rates of depression, whereas spirituality (S) is associated with higher rates. Rumination has also been associated with higher rates of depression. Some have hypothesized that rumination mediates the differential association of religiosity and spirituality with depression. We empirically test this hypothesis in a longitudinal, multigenerational sample through associations between rumination and depression, R/S and depression, and R/S and rumination. Cross-sectionally, total rumination scores were predicted by spirituality

Greater resting state functional connectivity of the medial prefrontal cortex with the thalamus, caudate, and putamen in individuals who adhere to the Mediterranean style diets.

PURPOSE: Healthy diets are believed to be associated with a reduced risk of experiencing common mental disorders (CMDs) and related symptomatology (such as ruminative thinking), and with healthier brain chemistry and structure, especially in the frontal regions implicated in CMDs, cognitive control, and food choice. Nevertheless, there is very limited research on the relationship between diet health/quality and brain function. In this study we assessed the associations between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and resting state functional connectivity (rs-FC) of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) w

Transcranial electric stimulation and neurocognitive training in clinically depressed patients: a pilot study of the effects on rumination.

Rumination is a cognitive-affective thinking style that plays a key role in the onset and maintenance of depression. Recently, it was shown that clinically depressed patients who received a neurocognitive training - involving two weeks of repetitive cognitive control exercises that necessitate prefrontal engagement - are more able to control over ruminative negative thoughts than patients who only received treatment as usual. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a biological technique that can directly modulate prefrontal excitability via the manipulation of neural membrane potent

JuSt - a multimodal program for treatment of insomnia in adolescents: a pilot study.

Insomnia is the most prevalent sleep disorder in adolescents. A number of studies have evaluated the efficacy of the management of chronic insomnia in adults. Behavioral therapy for insomnia is the treatment of first choice, encompassing education about sleep and sleep hygiene, stimulus control, relaxation techniques, and cognitive strategies to combat nocturnal ruminations. Special programs for adolescents are lacking. In this study an age-oriented treatment program for adolescents (JuSt) was developed and evaluated. Eighteen adolescents and their parents participated in a psychological short

Suicidal ideation in adults aging with HIV: neurological and cognitive considerations.

Because of highly active antiretroviral therapy, people are now aging with HIV. Several stressors associated with aging with HIV may result in increased levels of depression and suicidal ideation. In addition, neurological and cognitive changes that often accompany both aging and HIV must be considered because those aging with HIV are at greater risk of developing such problems. These problems may be reflected in executive functioning deficits and initiation and perseveration difficulties. Adults experiencing such problems may be predisposed to ruminative thoughts that can impair the ability t

Adaptive Associations between Social Cognition and Emotion Regulation are Absent in Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder.

Schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) are associated with impairments in facial emotion perception and Theory of Mind (ToM). These social cognitive skills deficits may be related to a reduced capacity to effectively regulate one's own emotions according to the social context. We therefore set out to examine the relationship between social cognitive abilities and the use of cognitive strategies for regulating negative emotion in SZ and BD. Participants were 56 SZ, 33 BD, and 58 healthy controls (HC) who completed the Ekman 60-faces test of facial emotion recognition; a sub-set of these p

Self-generated thoughts and depression: from daydreaming to depressive symptoms.

Human minds often engage in thoughts and feelings that are self-generated rather than stimulus-dependent, such as daydreaming. Recent research suggests that under certain circumstances, daydreaming is associated with adverse effects on cognition and affect. Based on recent literature about the influence of resting mind in relation to rumination and depression, this questionnaire study investigated mechanisms linking daydreaming to depressive symptoms. Specifically, an indirect effect model was tested in which daydreaming influences depressive symptoms through enhancing self-focus and ruminativ

Conflict at Work Impairs Physiological Recovery during Sleep: A Daily Diary Study.

Sleep plays an essential role in maintaining employees' health and well-being. However, stressors, such as conflict at work, may interfere with employees' sleep. Drawing on previous literature on the relationship between conflict at work and sleep outcomes, we proposed a negative relationship between daily conflict at work and physiological changes during early sleep, particularly nocturnal heart rate variability (HRV). Furthermore, building on the perseverative cognition hypothesis, we proposed that daily work-related rumination mediates the relationship between conflict at work and nocturnal

Effects of relaxation and mnemonics on memory, attention and anxiety in the elderly.

We measured attentional capacity as 25 normal elderly subjects were trained in techniques to improve face-name recall. Techniques consisted of relaxation training and a mnemonic device. Anxiety was measured simultaneously with attentional measures. We hypothesized that our techniques would increase available memory processing capacity by improving attention and reducing anxious rumination. Results indicated that subjects showing the greatest reduction in anxiety and cognitive interference and the greatest increase in attention also showed the most face-name recall following training. The resul

Regaining control of your emotions? Investigating the mechanisms underlying effects of cognitive control training for remitted depressed patients.

Studies suggest that cognitive control training shows potential as a preventive intervention for depression. At the same time, little is known regarding the mechanisms underlying effects of cognitive control training. Informed by theoretical frameworks of cognitive risk for recurrent depression (De Raedt & Koster, 2010; Siegle et al., 2007), the current study sought to model direct effects of cognitive control training on the complex interplay between affect, emotion regulation, residual symptomatology, and resilience in a sample of remitted depressed patients (n = 92). Combining a 4-week expe
