Extraosseous Ewing Sarcoma of the Scalp: A Rare Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Extraosseous Ewing sarcomas account for approximately 20%-30% of all Ewing sarcomas. Among these, 5%-10% occur in the head and neck region, representing approximately 1%-3% of all Ewing sarcomas. METHODS: We report the case of a 33-year-old female patient with a progressively enlarging mass in the frontal scalp over the course of 18 months. The lesion had previously been surgically excised twice, with benign pathology reports on both occasions. Given the imaging findings suggestive of malignancy, a diagnostic surgical resection was performed. RESULTS: Histology and immunophenotyp…

An Overview of Contemporary and Future Therapeutic Strategies for Scalp Psoriasis.

Scalp psoriasis is a common manifestation of psoriasis that significantly impacts a patient's quality of life. About 80% of cases of psoriasis involve the scalp, making it the most frequently affected area of the body. The treatment of scalp psoriasis is particularly crucial because of its hard-to-treat nature and substantial adverse impacts on overall well-being. Along with the physical symptoms of discomfort and itching, psoriasis, especially when it affects the scalp, can cause severe psychological damage. Treating scalp psoriasis can be challenging due to its location and associated sympto…

Minoxidil nanoliposomes as a hair growth stimulator and a scalp disinfectant.

Hair loss (alopecia) continues to be an issue for both sexes. There are multiple ways to reduce ‎the effects of alopecia, one of which is topical minoxidil (MXD). This study aimed to test the ‎effects of minoxidil nanoliposomes (MXD-NLs) on the hair of mice, compared with free MXD and to examine the disinfectant ability of MXD-NLs toward scalp bacteria. To test the study hypothesis, MXD-NLs and free MXD were prepared. Mouse hair was shaved prior to the experiment. MXD-NLs, free MXD and their vehicles were applied for 15 days. In addition, dermal swabs were used to isolate scalp bacteria and te…

Case Report: Leathery black plaque on the temple and scalp.

BACKGROUND: Epidermal nevus sebaceous, commonly known as the nevus sebaceous of Jadassohn, is a congenital sebaceous hamartoma. It typically manifests as a single yellowish plaque across the head and neck and is composed of sebaceous glands. It commonly occurs during infancy and grows during puberty. Usually, it follows a benign course; however, in a few cases, it can be malignant. This is the case of a 13-year-old child with verrucous plaques on the temple and scalp. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 13-year-old boy with a steadily developing hyperpigmented verrucous plaque on the scalp a…

Giant Epidermoid Cyst of the Scalp Growing for 76 Years.

Epidermoid cysts are prevalent noncancerous cutaneous lesions known to exhibit unusually extended periods of growth. In this study, we present a remarkable case of an epidermoid cyst located on the scalp, which exhibited a growth period of 76 years, the longest growth time documented in the literature to date. The presence of the mass was noted at birth, and it exhibited gradual growth throughout the years, with a notable acceleration observed during the final 2 years. The patient underwent a surgical excision, and the histopathological analysis was consistent with epidermoid cyst, featuring l…

Trichoscopy of Lichen Planopilaris in Black Scalp: A Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Lichen planopilaris (LPP) manifests as uni or multifocal patches of scarring alopecia across the scalp. Its symptoms include pruritus, trichodynia, and burning. Trichoscopy is a critical tool for early disease detection. In African descendants, LPP poses additional diagnostic challenges, given the black scalp peculiarities. These specific features include lower hair density, slower growth, and structural differences, compared to Caucasians. Moreover, the healthy black scalp may show distinctive features such as a honeycomb-pigmented network and sparse pinpoint white dots. SUMMARY:…

Neurocristic cutaneous hamartoma of the scalp with disseminated melanocytic nevi.

We report a newborn with neurocristic cutaneous hamartoma of the scalp. He was delivered at term via caesarean section due to a previous scar and presented at the neonatal unit on the fifth day with giant congenital nevi on the scalp and disseminated melanocytic nevi throughout the body. The MRI scan of the brain showed a defect at the occipital region with herniation of the occipital lobes and ventricles through the defect, with infratentorial brain parenchyma exhibiting normal signal return and intact cerebellum. The initial diagnosis was a giant haemangioma, which has ruptured, and possible…

The role of trichoscopy beyond hair and scalp diseases. A review.

Trichoscopy is a diagnostic tool for hair and scalp diseases. It was recently shown that it also allows the identification of features associated with disorders that typically do not affect the scalp. The aim of this article was to analyse and outline the usefulness of trichoscopy in suspecting such diseases. Connective tissue diseases were the most investigated systemic disorders in regard to trichoscopy. The most common features of systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis and dermatomyositis are thick arborizing and tortuous vessels. Avascular areas are present in systemic sclerosis.…

Rare Concurrence of Alopecia Areata in the Setting of the Lipedematous Scalp.

The lipedematous scalp (LS) is characterized by a thickened scalp because of the increased thickness of the subcutaneous fat layer. When the soft and boggy scalp is associated with shortened hairs and hair loss, it is referred to as lipedematous alopecia (LA). We report a case of alopecia areata with LS, which may be misdiagnosed as LA. However, the histopathologic features showed a thickened subcutaneous fat layer and hair bulb inflammation. Hair regrowth was appreciable after treatment with topical steroids, minoxidil, oral compound glycyrrhizin, and vitamin D. This case report aims to show …

[Pilonidal cyst of the scalp following a single minor trauma].

The pilonidal cyst is an inflammatory disease occurring when a hair follicle penetrates inside a surgical wound. Uncommon in the scalp region, the pilonidal sinus is typically encountered in the sacrococcygeal regions. A single minor trauma of the scalp can be an inductor factor. The surgical treatment includes one-piece excision of the cyst followed by direct closure. We report a case of a 4-year-old child presenting a pilonidal sinus of the scalp following a single minor trauma.

A review of indigenous therapies for hair and scalp disorders in Nigeria.

Hair and scalp disorders are common among individuals of African descent and constitute a significant proportion of dermatological conditions in them. Recently, there has been an increasing demand for natural products globally, especially for hair grooming and treatment of hair disorders. These naturally occurring products are accessible and affordable, perceived to be less toxic and contribute to wellness in an individual. Reports of possible complications from commercial hair products have also led to an increase in the demand for natural products in Nigeria. Indigenous therapies for hair an…
