Validation of PRISM (Pictorial Representation of Illness and Self Measure) as a novel visual assessment tool for the burden of suffering in tinnitus patients.

BACKGROUND: Chronic subjective tinnitus is a frequent condition that affects the subject's quality of life. The lack of objective measures of tinnitus necessitates the use of self-reporting and often time-consuming questionnaires for evaluating tinnitus severity. The Pictorial Representation of Illness and Self Measure (PRISM) is a two dimensional pictorial method to assess the burden of suffering. Patients illustrate their burden of suffering by the distance from a "self" to an illness circle, whereby a shorter distance indicates a higher burden of suffering. The aim of this prospective obser

The 33-item Hypomania Checklist (HCL-33) - a study of the consistency between self - and external assessments in Polish bipolar patients.

OBJECTIVES: The Hypomania Checklist (HCL) has become an important tool for the assessment of hypomanic symptoms in patients with mood disorders and in the general population. The HCL-33 scale, containing 33 symptom items, is a new instrument which, in addition to the self-administered questionnaire, has a version for external rating. The aim of this study is to evaluate the consistency between the self - and external assessments using the HCL-33 in Polish patients with bipolar disorder. METHODS: The data from 81 euthymic bipolar patients recruited in Poznan and Krakow centers were analyzed. A

Factors associated with self-assessed increase in tobacco consumption among over-indebted individuals in Germany: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Over-indebtedness is an increasing phenomenon in industrialised nations causing individual hardship and societal problems. Nonetheless, few studies have explored smoking among over-indebted individuals. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey (n=949) on retrospectively assessed changes in tobacco consumption was carried out in 2006 and 2007 among clients of 84 officially approved debt and insolvency counselling centres in Germany (response rate 39.7%). Logistic regressions were performed to explore factors associated with reports of increased smoking after onset of over-indebtedness. R

Oral disease and psychosocial risk determinants in relation to self-assessments of general health in persons with chronic whiplash-related disorders.

The aim of this study was to analyse how self-assessed general health was related to oral health among persons afflicted with whiplash-associated disorders (WAD), controlling for relevant background factors, confounders and other risk factors. Questionnaires included the SF-36 Health Survey, self-assessed oral health and relevant risk factors, in total 49 questions. Multivariable regression modelling was performed. Members of a nationwide Swedish association enlisting persons who have problems concerning a whiplash injury (n = 1,928) were included. A total of 979 persons participated in the st

Self-assessed job satisfaction and ischaemic heart disease mortality: a 10-year follow-up of urban bus drivers.

Several studies have shown that bus driving is a high-risk occupation for ischaemic heart disease (IHD). In order to study contributing factors in the job, all male full-time bus drivers in the three major cities in Denmark were followed for 10 years. It was hypothesized that bus drivers who reported job strain and job dissatisfaction would have an excess risk of subsequent death due to IHD. Of 2465 bus drivers, 2045 (83%) responded to a questionnaire distributed in 1978 on psychosocial well-being and work conditions. The men had their mortality recorded during the years 1978-1988. Association between depression and subjective well-being among older adults in China: the mediating effect of self-assessed health.

BACKGROUND: As the aging population gradually intensifies, it becomes particularly important to pay attention to the quality of life of older adults and improve their sense of happiness. Depression in older adults is a potential risk factor for subjective well-being (SWB). METHODS: This study selected self-assessed health(SAH) as a mediating variable and constructed a mediation effect model to reveal this relationship and its underlying mechanism. The research data were obtained from the 2020 Chinese Family Panel Studies (CFPS). We selected 4606 Chinese older adults aged 60 years and older as

Clinical correlates of non-responders to ketamine in terms of self-assessed life engagement among treatment-resistant depression patients.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive and bipolar disorders are leading causes of disability, with many patients developing treatment-resistant depression (TRD/TRBD). Ketamine offers rapid symptom relief, yet recovery extends beyond symptoms. Life engagement (LE) is a key patient-centered outcome encompassing the ability to experience pleasure, function effectively, and participate in meaningful activities but remains understudied. This study examines clinical and sociodemographic correlates of LE non-response following short-term ketamine intervention. METHODS: A retrospective analysis using data fro

Assessing frailty in hemodialysis patients: utility of a self-rated visual analogue scale and the role of routine parameters in clinical prediction.

BACKGROUND: There is still no established consensus on the optimal frailty screening tool for routine clinical application in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We evaluated the accuracy of a visual analogue scale (VAS) for frailty screening and identified clinical predictors of frailty based on the modified Fried criteria. METHODS: This cross-sectional, multicenter study included 122 adult patients on hemodialysis. Frailty status was assessed using modified Fried criteria and a 5-point self-rated VAS. The agreement between these two methods was evaluated using Cohen's Kappa. For the

Importance of Imaging Assessment Criteria in Predicting the Need for Post-Dilatation in Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation with a Self-Expanding Bioprosthesis.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has revolutionized the treatment of severe aortic valve stenosis (AS). Balloon post-dilatation (PD) remains an important procedural step to optimize valve function by resolving incomplete valve expansion, which may lead to paravalvular regurgitation and other potentially adverse effects. There are only limited data on the predictors, incidence, and clinical impact of PD during TAVI. METHODS: This retrospective, single-center study analyzed 585 patients who underwent TAVI (2016-2022). Pre-procedural evaluations included transthoracic e

Assessing Personal and Family Strengths Among Active-Duty Military Members to Predict Self-Directed Harm and Interpersonal Violence.

United States active-duty military members face elevated risk of self-directed harm and interpersonal violence. Prevention resources for family maltreatment in the military context have received notable investments in recent years, culminating in the development of the Personal and Family Strengths Inventory (PFSI), a strengths-based prevention and treatment-planning tool aimed at inventorying key dimensions of individuals' formal supports, informal supports, family environment, individual fitness, and personal resilience. Research has showcased the utility of the holistic assessment of factor

Image-Derived Modeling to Assess Coronary Proximity in Patients Undergoing Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Replacement With Self-Expanding Valves.

BACKGROUND: The potential for coronary artery compression (CC) during transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement (TPVR) using self-expanding valves (SEV) is not fully understood, yet anecdotal reports suggest that this risk exists. AIMS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients evaluated for SEV-TPVR to evaluate the relationship between the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) and coronary arteries (CA). CT-derived segmentations of the RVOT and CA were created using machine learning. A 2D map of the distance between the RVOT surface and CA, in systole and diastole, w

The Rating of Emotional Abuse in Childhood (REACH) Questionnaire: A new self-report measure assessing history of childhood emotional abuse.

BACKGROUND: A history of childhood emotional abuse (CEA) is prevalent among adults with affective disorders; therefore, a comprehensive measure of it is vital. The Rating of Emotional Abuse in Childhood Questionnaire (REACH) was developed to assess history of CEA in relation to parental behaviours of threat, ignoring, humiliation/denigration, scapegoating, antipathy, and overcontrol/conditionality in a single measure. This paper investigated the psychometric properties of REACH in a community sample and proposes values for classifying individuals as high-risk for CEA. METHOD: A convenience sa
