BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The sleep-onset rapid eye movement (REM) period (SOREMP), the hallmark of narcolepsy, may be a specific state and not the simple anticipation of REM sleep.
METHODS: We analyzed the electroencephalographic spectral content in untreated patients with narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) during the sleep-onset period (SOP) and during nocturnal REM sleep in two consecutive nocturnal recordings from 31 patients with NT1 (mean age 34 ± 15 years, 18 males) and a single nocturnal recording from 36 controls (mean age 38 ± 13 years, 21 males). The SOP was defined as the first 10 min starting

These results suggest that spinosin may be an antagonist at postsynaptic 5-HT(1A) receptors because these effects of 8-OH-DPAT were considered to be mediated via postsynaptic 5-HT(1A) receptors. Moreover …

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is known to be essential for memory. Hence, REM sleep deprivation impairs memory processes. The frequently prescribed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are known to cause REM sleep deprivation and to impair cognitive performance in humans and rodents. We suggested that impaired memory processes by citalopram in C57/BL6 mice could be explained by the acute inhibition of REM sleep. We hypothesized that those acute citalopram 5 and 10 mg/kg injections induced REM sleep deprivation, altered cognitive performance in passive avoidance, impaired spatial me

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep disinhibition at the beginning of the night is one of the most frequently described biologic abnormalities in depression. As REM sleep in animals and humans seems to be facilitated by cholinergic neuronal activity, it has been postulated that REM sleep disinhibition in depression is a consequence of cholinergic neuronal overactivity. The current study with the newly available cholinergic agonist RS-86, which is orally active, has a half-life of six to eight hours, and exhibits only minor peripheral side effects, supports this assumption. The application of this c

RATIONALE: New sleep disturbance model in rats is useful for estimating the characteristics of some hypnotics.
OBJECTIVES: The present study was undertaken to investigate the utility of a sleep disturbance model by placing rats on a grid suspended over water using three kinds of hypnotics, that is, short-acting benzodiazepine (triazolam), intermediate-acting benzodiazepine (flunitrazepam) and long-acting barbiturate (phenobarbital).
METHODS: Electrodes for measurement of EEG and EMG were implanted into the frontal cortex and the dorsal neck muscle of rats. EEG and EMG were recorded with an e

Sodium gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a remarkably safe and nontoxic hypnotic agent which is reported to be free of addicting properties. It is also a normal metabolite of the mammalian nervous system. We examined its effects on the sleep-EEG of eight patients with histories of impaired sleep, as a prelude to a more detailed study of its clinical potential. Sleep induced with GHB was indistinguishable subjectively from natural sleep as well as by behavioral and electroencephalographic criteria. Unlike most synthetic hypnotics, GHB increased delta sleep and did not suppress REM sleep. It shorte

The current study sought to elucidate the interplay of the mutually influencing processes of daily mood and REM sleep, a stage of sleep hypothesised to be involved in affect change. Young adult college students (N = 156; Mage = 20.3 years, SD = 3.2; 77.6% female) completed a baseline online survey followed by wearing an ambulatory EEG headband overnight and completing daily morning and evening mood surveys for 10 consecutive days. Results, based on dynamic structural equation modelling, demonstrated a bidirectional relationship between evening negative mood and REM sleep minutes such that decr

A standard sleep questionnaire was given to the parents of 26 infants with protein-energy malnutrition who underwent polysomnographic evaluation. These investigations were repeated approximately 2 months after enrolment in a nutritional rehabilitation programme based on World Health Organization guidelines. Anthropometric values and serum serotonin levels were also measured. After nutritional rehabilitation there was a significantly higher percentage of non-rapid eye movement (REM) sleep; 2nd REM time, and latency times for sleep and REM sleep increased. Percentages of REM sleep and serum sero

In 36 healthy control subjects (21 females, 15 males; age range 18-65 years; mean age 41.8 years, SD 15.6 years), a bedtime dose of 1.5 mg RS 86, an orally acting cholinergic agonist, shortened rapid eye movement (REM) latency, increased REM sleep, and decreased slow-wave sleep. Six of the subjects (greater than 40 years old) even displayed sleep-onset REM periods after the drug. Results of the present study agree well with those of studies using other cholinomimetics (i.e., physostigmine, arecholine) and confirm the importance of the cholinergic system for REM sleep regulation. Since RS 86 mi

Many patients suffering from the majority of anxiety disorders complain about their sleep by reporting difficulties in initiating and maintaining it. Polysomnographic studies have shown that, in comparison to normal subjects, the sleep of patients with panic disorder is characterized by longer sleep latency, increased time awake and reduced sleep efficiency. Sleep architecture is normal and there are no significant changes in REM sleep measures. Nocturnal panic attacks are non-REM-related events and occur without an obvious trigger in 18-45% of panic disorder patients. Regarding generalized an

The perifornical lateral hypothalamic area (PF-LHA) has been implicated in the control of several waking behaviours, including feeding, motor activity and arousal. Several cell types are located in the PF-LHA, including projection neurons that contain the hypocretin peptides (also known as orexins). Recent findings suggest that hypocretin neurons are involved in sleep-wake regulation. Loss of hypocretin neurons in the human disorder narcolepsy is associated with excessive somnolence, cataplexy and increased propensity for rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. However, the relationship of PF-LHA neur

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To describe emotional experience during sleep-onset rapid-eye-movement [(REM) SOREM] sleep and nighttime REM in narcoleptic patients and to relate any differences in REM emotion to the more general abnormalities of this disorder.
DESIGN: Awakenings were performed from SOREM (REM at the onset of daytime naps and nighttime sleep) and nighttime emergent (ascending) REM in 15 patients with narcolepsy and from nighttime REM in 9 normal healthy participants. Subjects rated the occurrence and intensity of discrete emotion types for each line in their REM-mentation reports. Fragment

The polygraphically recorded sleep-wake continuum of 21 Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) patients was compared with that of 19 normal people. In the Prader-Willi group, excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is found in 95% of subjects, and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep disorders occur in 52%. These two features were significantly different from the normal group of subjects. No indications were found for the presence of the apnoea syndrome. The REM sleep disorders are: sleep onset rapid eye movements (SOREM), REM sleep in naps, many arousals during REM sleep, and a significant decrease in total REM sl

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep-related breathing disorder that is diagnosed more frequently in men. The aim of this population-based cross-sectional study was to describe sex-specific differences in sleep stage distribution and subjective daytime sleepiness in individuals with OSA. Special attention was given to the distribution of the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) in rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep.
METHODS: This study analyzed data from the SHIP-TREND-0 cohort, a population-based study from northeastern Germany. Standardized polysomnography identified 604 p

INTRODUCTION: An alveolar hypoventilation physiologically occurs during sleep and more specifically during REM sleep.
STATE OF THE ART: During obstructive chronic respiratory failures, increases in PaCO2 that are associated with REM sleep can participate to the severity of daytime hypercapnia and in a subgroup of patients lead to an indication of nocturnal non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in association with the long-term oxygen therapy. A REM sleep hypoventilation generally appears during the early course of restrictive chronic respiratory failures. This REM sleep hypoventilation represents on

Reduced rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep is associated with impaired learning in many species. We developed a reversal learning test (RLT) suitable for field conditions to explore this association in 16 healthy horses. Nocturnal REM-like sleep behavior was recorded five times for 48 h over a six-week period. The horses performed a target training task followed by an RLT using two objects. When the horses reached a predefined frequency of touching the object, the spatial location was reversed. Mean test parameters were statistically analysed using GENLIN models, longitudinal continuous variables

Almost all tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressants as well as the MAO (monoamineoxidase) inhibitors suppress REM sleep significantly and sustainedly. This does not seem to be an epiphenomenon of antidepressant pharmacotherapy, since initial REM sleep suppression during pharmacological treatment correlated positively with antidepressant effect after three weeks. Furthermore, selective REM-sleep deprivation (by waking patients) had a marked antidepressive effect in depressed patients. The present study used rapid eye movement (REM) sleep suppression in healthy volunteers as a marker to compare

In a recent review, Frank and Heller (2003) provided support for their 'presleep theory' of sleep development. According to this theory, rapid eye movement (REM) and non-rapid eye movement (Non-REM) sleep in rats emerge from a common 'dissociated' state only when the neocortical EEG differentiates at 12 days of age (P12). Among the assumptions and inferences associated with this theory is that sleep before EEG differentiation is only 'sleep-like' and can only be characterized using behavioral measures; that the neural mechanisms governing presleep are distinct from those governing REM and Non-

Most antidepressants change sleep; in particular, they alter the physiological patterns of sleep stages recorded overnight with EEG and other physiological measures. These effects are greatest and most consistent on rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and tend to be in the opposite direction to the sleep abnormalities found in major depression, but are usually of greater degree. Reductions in the amount of REM sleep and increases in REM sleep onset latency are seen after taking antidepressants, both in healthy volunteers and in depressed patients. Antidepressants that increase serotonin function b

Most sleep-related seizures occur during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, particularly during stage changes. Sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy (SHE) is a rare epileptic syndrome characterized by paroxysmal motor seizures, mainly arising from NREM sleep. Here, we report a patient with SHE who had seven seizures captured on video-EEG-polysomnography during REM sleep. Ictal semiology of this patient ranged from brief paroxysmal arousals to hypermotor seizures. On EEG-polysomnography, the spontaneous arousals were more frequent during REM than NREM sleep, with a considerably higher arousal ind
