Ultra-high b-value diffusion-weighted imaging features of the prostatic leiomyoma-case report.

BACKGROUND: Leiomyoma of the prostate is a rare benign tumor arising from smooth muscle fibers. Most cases are incidental findings observed during pathological examinations after resection of the prostate. To the best of our knowledge, only few studies have reported the conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of such tumors; however, no reports have described the ultra-high b-value diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) findings of prostatic leiomyomas. CASE PRESENTATION: We report MR imaging characteristics and surgical pathologic findings of

Recurrent Abdominal Pain Caused by a Parasitic Leiomyoma Containing Endometrial Cells Following Laparoscopic Hysterectomy.

Parasitic leiomyomas are rare complications of uterine morcellation after laparoscopic hysterectomy (LH). These tumors typically consist of smooth muscle cells and are often asymptomatic. However, parasitic leiomyomas containing endometrial cells that exhibit periodic abdominal pain have not been reported previously. A 47-year-old woman presented with recurrent right lower abdominal pain two years after undergoing LH and bilateral salpingectomy for uterine leiomyoma. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a 2.5-cm mass lesion between the lateral aspect of the ascending colon and the

Urethral and paraurethral leiomyomas in the female patient.

Urethral leiomyomas in women arise from the smooth muscle of the urethra and are rare, benign urethral tumors seen primarily in women. We present three cases of urethral leiomyomas identified over a 30-year period at our institution. A 45-year old woman presented with a 1 year history of frequency, nocturia, and hesitancy and was found to have both a 2-cm proximal urethral and a 3-cm posterior bladder leiomyoma. She developed stress urinary incontinence postoperatively and was treated with a Burch colposuspension. A 33-year old woman with hematuria was found to have both a 3-cm urethral and a

Somatostatinoma of the papilla of Vater with multiple gastrointestinal stromal tumors in a patient with von Recklinghausen's disease.

We report a case of somatostatinoma of the papilla of Vater with multiple gastrointestinal stromal tumors in a patient with von Recklinghausen's disease (VRD). A 64-year-old woman who had had recurrent attacks of acute pancreatitis and cholangitis was found, on gastroduodenal endoscopy, to have a tumor of the papilla of Vater and multiple submucosal tumors of the stomach and duodenum. Numerous submucosal tumors were observed in the stomach, duodenum, and jejunum, and total excision of the papilla of Vater and resection of the duodenal and jejunal submucosal tumors was performed. The tumor of t

Hemangioma in the anterior mediastinum.

Anterior mediastinal hemangiomas are very rare neoplasms in mediastinal tumors. A 58-year-old woman was revealed to have a mass measuring 4 x 3 cm in size in the anterior mediastinum with calcification on computed tomography. It was initially suspected to be a thymoma. We performed tumor extirpation in November 1998. The tumor was close to the thymus and slightly adhered to the superior vena cava, ascending aorta and right phrenic nerve, however, it did not invade any surrounding organs. Histopathologically, it was diagnosed to be a venous type hemangioma composed of vessels covered by smooth

Late recurrence (33 years) of a gastric epithelioid stromal tumor (leiomyoblastoma) with low malignant potential.

A recurrence of a gastric epithelioid stromal tumor (leiomyoblastoma) 33 years after incomplete resection and radiation therapy is reported. The original tumor involved the posterior gastric wall and presented with intraperitoneal hemorrhage. A tumor recurrence was found attached to the stomach with invasion through the wall of the splenic flexure of the colon. The histologic features of the tumor had not significantly altered, except for a slight increase in mitotic rate. Neither the original tumor nor the recurrence exhibited smooth-muscle differentiation on ultrastructural or immunohistoche

Endometrial stromal sarcoma of the vagina.

Endometrial stromal sarcoma is a rare tumor and has unique histopathologic features. Most tumors of this kind occur in the uterus; thus, the vagina is an extremely rare site. A 34-year-old woman presented with endometrial stromal sarcoma arising in the vagina. No correlative endometriosis was found. Because of the uncommon location, this tumor was differentiated from other more common neoplasms of the vagina, particularly embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma and other smooth muscle tumors. Although the pathogenesis of endometrial stromal tumors remains controversial, the most common theory of its origin…

Pulmonary Smooth Muscle Hyperplasia Difficult to Differentiate from Primary Lung Cancer: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary smooth muscle hyperplasia (SMH) is a rare benign tumor that presents CT imaging findings that require differentiation from those of primary lung cancer. CASE PRESENTATION: The postoperative follow-up chest CT for gastric cancer in a 76-year-old Japanese man revealed an abnormal shadow. A 2.2-cm nodule with an unclear border and showing a tendency to grow was detected in the right lower lobe (S6), and suspected infiltration into the right upper lobe (S2). PET showed minimal accumulation of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose in the nodule, with a maximum standardized uptake value of

Rare Large Intestinal Lesions: A Case Series of Colonic Leiomyomas.

INTRODUCTION: Colonic leiomyomas are benign smooth muscle tumors of the large intestine. Although more commonly seen in the esophagus, leiomyomas of the colon are occasionally discovered during colonoscopies with the large intestine accounting for only 3% of gastrointestinal leiomyomas. Appropriate excision and staining can differentiate them from similar mesenchymal growths. Current guidelines do not offer recommendations on follow-up for this type of lesion, but recurrence rates are low based on reported cases. The purpose of this case series is to report 10 cases of this rare form of coloni…

Cystic Ovarian Leiomyoma in a Patient with Progressive Abdominal Pain.

BACKGROUND Ovarian leiomyomas are rare, benign, smooth muscle, solid tumors that occur in women aged 20 to 65 years. Because their histology is benign, the prognosis for patients is good. We report the case of a patient with a huge ovarian leiomyoma who presented to the General Surgery Clinic with chronic abdominal pain and progressive abdominal distention. CASE REPORT A 45-year-old woman with a history of multiple myomectomies and a total abdominal hysterectomy with right oophorectomy presented to the General Surgery Clinic with abdominal pain and a 4-year history of progressive distention. Intraocular leiomyoma: Current concepts.

Intraocular leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle tumor. First recognized before the era of immunohistochemistry, uveal leiomyomas have been described in case reports and small case series. We add 3 new cases, for a total of 80. Of these, there were 29 men and 51 women. The mean and median ages were 35.8 and 30.5 years respectively, with a range of 8 to 80 years. Curiously, ciliary body tumors were more common in females, whereas iris and posterior choroidal leiomyomas were more prevalent in males. Infrequently associated with systemic fibroids, nuclear expression of sex steroid receptors was in…

Glomus tumor of the ovary: a case report.

A 55-year-old woman underwent a total hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, partial omentectomy, and lymphadenectomy for endometrial cancer. Histologically, the cancer was endometrioid adenocarcinoma grade 1, which invaded the myometrium. There was no macroscopically detectable mass in the ovaries. However, histological examination revealed a small tumor, 1 mm in size, in the medulla of the right ovary. The ovarian tumor was composed of uniform epithelioid cells that grew in nests. Vessels of various sizes were observed within the tumor, and they were surrounded by tumor cells. Immuno

[A case of intratracheal osteoma].

A 75-year-old woman who complained of cough at night and stridor on exertion was admitted for examination of a possible tracheal tumor. Chest radiography and CT showed an intratracheal calcification. Bronchoscopic examination revealed a lobulated tumor on the anterior wall of the trachea, 6 cm below the vocal cord. The tumor was covered with tracheal epithelium. Microscopic findings of the transtracheal biopsy specimen revealed the tumor to be composed of bone tissues covered with normal tracheal epithelium. No cartilage, smooth muscle, or fats tissue were detected, and so a diagnosis of intra

Evaluation of NF2 and NF1 tumor suppressor genes in distinctive gastrointestinal nerve sheath tumors traditionally diagnosed as benign schwannomas: s study of 20 cases.

A significant percentage of conventional schwannomas, whether sporadic or associated with neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2), show loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at NF2 and/or NF2 inactivating mutations. Similarly, a significant percentage of neurofibromas show LOH at NF1 and/or NF1 inactivating mutations. There are no molecular genetic data on gastrointestinal (GI) nerve sheath tumors traditionally diagnosed as benign schwannomas, rare neoplasms possibly derived from the schwannian elements dispersed between the smooth muscle fibers. In this study, we analyzed 1 esophageal, 16 gastric, 1 small intestina

Small Benign Storiform Fibrous Tumor (Fibrous Histiocytoma) of the Conjunctival Substantia Propria in a Child: Review and Clarification of Biologic Behavior.

PURPOSE: A case of a small benign storiform fibrous tumor of the conjunctival substantia propria is described to clarify the category of fibrous histiocytoma. In addition, a comparison of the various spindle cell tumors of the conjunctival substantia propria is explored. METHODS: The patient underwent a complete tumor excision, and the specimen was analyzed by histopathologic and immunohistochemical investigations. RESULTS: A cellular mass, composed solely of spindle cells in a storiform pattern without a component of histiocytic cells, was found beneath an undisturbed nonkeratinizing squamo

Scrotal leiomyomas with bizarre nuclei: a report of three cases.

We discuss here three cases of scrotal leiomyoma with bizarre nuclei. The patients, ranging in age from 44 to 58 years, presented with painless scrotal masses that were clinically diagnosed as cysts. Clinical follow-up, available for two of the patients, revealed no evidence of local recurrence or distant metastasis 5 years after resection. The tumors were well circumscribed and ranged from 2 to 3 cm in maximal diameter. They were characterized by interlacing fascicles of spindle-shaped cells with pleomorphic nuclei. Nuclei were large and multilobulated with hyperchromatic chromatin and macron

A case of retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenoma treated successfully by laparoscopic excision.

A case of retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenoma treated laparoscopically is reported. A 26-year-old woman, who complained of abdominal fullness, was referred to us after a large intra-abdominal mass was discovered at her local hospital. Ultrasound and computed tomography showed a fluid-filled mass, 9 cm in diameter, in the left retroperitoneal space. Laparoscopic surgery was performed. We found a smooth and thin-walled cystic tumor that displaced the descending colon to the right and arose from the retroperitoneum, loosely adhering to the psoas muscle. We successfully extirpated the tumor lapar

Malignant myoepithelioma of the salivary gland--an untypical clinical course.

A case of malignant tumor developing from myoepithelial cells (malignant myoepithelioma) is presented. The primary focus was located in the region of the left submandibular salivary gland. A relapse and metastases were disclosed in the same salivary gland, in the lung and the left breast. Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated positive reactions for S-100 protein, cytokeratins, smooth muscle actin, vimentin, GFAP protein, p53 protein and Ki-67 antigen, and allowed for establishing the final histopathological diagnosis of malignant myoepithelioma.

A case of retroperitoneal lipoleiomyoma.

We report a case of lipoleiomyoma which arose in retroperitoneum and presented with progressively distended abdomen in a 56-yr-old woman. The tumor was well encapsulated and consisted of two components, benign smooth muscle cells and mature adipose tissue without any atypia. It is likely to be mistaken as extrarenal angiomyolipoma, well-differentiated liposarcoma and leiomyoma with fatty change. We review the histologic characteristics of previously reported myolipoma and describe essential points of differential diagnosis.

Aggressive angiomyxoma. A report of four cases occurring in men.

Aggressive angiomyxoma is a distinctive, locally aggressive but nonmetastasizing soft tissue tumor of the pelvic soft tissues and perineum. This rare tumor occurs almost exclusively in adult women. We report four cases occurring in adult men, one each located in the scrotum, inguinal region, spermatic cord, and pelvis. The tumors were infiltrative, and were composed of fibromyxoid matrix sparsely populated by bland-looking spindled and stellate cells with delicate cytoplasmic processes. There were haphazardly scattered small and large blood vessels, some of which exhibited hypertrophy or hyali
