[The contribution of ethnography to knowledge on socio-cultural codes related to localized cutaneous leishmaniasis in a health education program in Venezuela].

This article presents the experience with the validation of the ethnographic methodology as an alternative for an objective and timely approach to the construction of socio-cultural scenarios in communities affected by cutaneous leishmaniasis in Venezuela. It begins with a brief presentation on the resurgence of leishmaniasis in the Americas as a whole and in Venezuela in the context of social inequalities. It proceeds with a review of the role of health education in programs to control endemic diseases. It then highlights the role of ethnography in the construction of rationality in daily lif

Pain Rating is Worth a Thousand Words: Nocebo Hyperalgesia Induced by Verbal Modeling Prevails Over the Effects of Symbolic Modeling and Verbal Suggestion.

This study compares the effectiveness of verbal modeling, symbolic modeling, and verbal suggestion in inducing nocebo hyperalgesia. It is the first study to examine the contribution of stress to observationally induced nocebo hyperalgesia. This study's experimental groups represented various sources of social information: a group of people participating in the study (verbal modeling), a single participant (symbolic modeling), and an experimenter (verbal suggestion). During the experiment, participants received electrocutaneous stimuli at the same intensity, some of which were applied with a no

Patient Perceptions of Sensitive Genetic and Other Medical Information: Findings from a Cancer Survivors Survey in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: Our previous findings indicated that hospitals frequently restrict access to genetic information, while access to other types of sensitive information-such as psychological counseling records or infectious disease diagnoses-is limited in a smaller proportion of facilities (Suzuki et al., 2023). This practice, grounded in a paternalistic medical framework, highlights the need to incorporate patients' perspectives into future information governance. Therefore, this study aimed to explore how individuals with a history of cancer perceive the sensitivity of various types of medical i

Sales and Advertising Channels of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS): Internet, Social Networks, and Smartphone Apps.

In the last decade, the trend of drug consumption has completely changed, and several new psychoactive substances (NPS) have appeared on the drug market as legal alternatives to common drugs of abuse. Designed to reproduce the effects of illegal substances like cannabis, ecstasy, cocaine, or ketamine, NPS are only in part controlled by UN conventions and represent an emerging threat to global public health. The effects of NPS greatly differ from drug to drug and relatively scarce information is available at present about their pharmacology and potential toxic effects. Yet, compared to more tra

Towards gender equality in health in Afghanistan.

The Afghanistan gender inequality index shows that 70% loss in development is due to the limited participation of women in the workforce, low education and poor women's health outcomes. However, since the fall of the Taliban regime in 2002, gender inequalities in health have improved. This paper will review factors that led to these improvements. The review draws upon information from various sources, including formative and applied research, surveys and existing information systems. The review showed gender differentials in morbidity, mortality and accessing and utilising health services. Hea

Explicit and implicit memory bias in panic disorder with agoraphobia.

Thirty patients with a diagnosis of panic disorder with agoraphobia and 30 normal controls were compared on explicit memory (cued recall) and implicit memory (word stem completion) for positive, neutral, social threat, and physical threat words. The panic patients showed an explicit memory bias, but no implicit memory bias, for physical threat words. The index of explicit memory bias for physical threat words was found to correlate with anxiety sensitivity and degree of agoraphobic fear and avoidance. The index of baseline bias for threat words on the word completion task, on the other hand, c

Febrile Illness Evaluation in a Broad Range of Endemicities (FIEBRE): protocol for a multisite prospective observational study of the causes of fever in Africa and Asia.

INTRODUCTION: Fever commonly leads to healthcare seeking and hospital admission in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. There is only limited guidance for clinicians managing non-malarial fevers, which often results in inappropriate treatment for patients. Furthermore, there is little evidence for estimates of disease burden, or to guide empirical therapy, control measures, resource allocation, prioritisation of clinical diagnostics or antimicrobial stewardship. The Febrile Illness Evaluation in a Broad Range of Endemicities (FIEBRE) study seeks to address these information gaps. METHODS AND ANALYSIS

After the screen: A social work-led stepped referral pathway for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and psychosocial risk in Ugandan antenatal clinics.

Antenatal services increasingly screen for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and other psychosocial and contextual risks, yet many women do not reach care when referral pathways are fragmented, costly, or unsafe. This qualitative process evaluation, informed by implementation science and realist inquiry, examined a social work-led stepped referral pathway embedded in two public-sector antenatal clinics in Uganda. Data comprised clinic observations and interviews with pregnant and postpartum women and with the clinical, social work, community, and referral personnel involved in linka

Beyond vulnerability: reflective selfhood, rural woman identity reinterpretation, and agency under structural constraint.

Personality, social, and narrative psychology increasingly call for context-sensitive approaches to understanding how selfhood and agency are organized under structurally unequal conditions. This three-wave field survey examined prospective associations among adversity experiences, reflective selfhood, rural woman identity reinterpretation, family decision-making power, psychological resilience, and agency among rural women in China. Reflective selfhood and rural woman identity reinterpretation were conceptualized as preliminary, narrative-informed, context-sensitive operationalizations of the

Audiovisual integration of faces and voices in Chinese individuals with social anxiety.

Social information processing and magnetic resonance imaging in children with sickle cell disease.

OBJECTIVE: To examine social information processing, social skills, and adjustment difficulties in children with sickle cell disease (SCD) as rated by caregivers, teachers, and the children themselves. Both groups had HbSS SCD. We compared these two groups and a third group of 11 children who had a milder type of SCD (HbSC). Measuring the impact of onychomycosis on patient quality of life.

According to survey research, onychomycosis, a fungal infection of the toenail or fingernail, affects quality of life including physical and social functioning and emotional health. We developed an onychomycosis disease-specific questionnaire (ODSQ) that sensitively assessed symptom distress, functional impact, and social stigma associated with the disease. Samples of patients enrolled in a randomized controlled clinical trial were used for the psychometric evaluations. The multi-item scales were internally consistent (alpha > or = 0.80) and reproducible (ICC > 0.85). Interscale correlations b
