Social Support as a Buffer of the Association between Sexual Assault and Trauma Symptoms Among Transgender and Gender Diverse Individuals.

The prevalence of experiencing sexual assault is alarmingly high among Transgender and Gender Diverse people (TGD; people whose gender identities and/or expressions are not traditionally associated with their sex assigned at birth) and is associated with various mental health sequalae. Perceived social support has been shown to abate the negative outcomes of sexual assault among cisgender individuals, yet little is known about this association among TGD people, especially which provider of support (i.e., family, friends, or significant others) may be most beneficial. To that end, 191 TGD adult

Early motor delays as diagnostic clues in autism spectrum disorder.

UNLABELLED: Early identification of autism facilitates referral for early intervention services, shown to be effective in enhancing parent-child interaction as well as adaptive behavior, communication, and socialization. Traditional hallmarks for the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) include deficits in social communication and social interaction as well as stereotypic or repetitive behavioral patterns. Research during the past decade suggests that developmental motor delays during early childhood may also be important predictors of this difficult-to-make diagnosis. The purpose of th…

Visual identification of conspecifics shapes social behavior in mice.

Recognizing conspecifics-others of the same species-in order to determine how to interact with them appropriately is a fundamental goal of animal sensory systems. It has undergone selective pressure in nearly all species. Mice have a large repertoire of social behaviors that are the subject of a rapidly growing field of study in neuroscience. Mouse social interactions likely incorporate all available sensory modalities, and the vast majority of studies have not attempted to isolate them. Our understanding of the role of vision in mouse social interactions remains overlooked, given the prominen…

The impact of trauma and PTSD on social functioning in refugees and asylum seekers post-migration: systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Refugees and asylum seekers often experience trauma, leading to high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the extent to which trauma and PTSD impacts social functioning, such as social relationships or engaging with community activities in new environments, remains unclear. AIMS: This systematic review aims to identify key areas of social functioning influenced by trauma and PTSD, with additional analyses stratified by trauma type. METHOD: A comprehensive search of five databases, grey literature sources, and reference lists was conducted in February 2025. Inc

Friendship fights cancer.

In this issue of Neuron, Wen et al.1 reveal that social interaction activates an ACC→BLA circuit in female breast cancer model mice, reducing anxiety, norepinephrine, and tumor growth. Circuit manipulations shift immunity toward cytotoxic T cells, uncovering a brain-immune pathway translating companionship into antitumor effects.

Environmental context predicts state fluctuations in negative symptoms in youth at clinical high risk for psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Negative symptoms (avolition, anhedonia, asociality) are a prevalent symptom in those across the psychosis-spectrum and also occur at subclinical levels in the general population. Recent work has begun to examine how environmental contexts (e.g. locations) influence negative symptoms. However, limited work has evaluated how environments may contribute to negative symptoms among youth at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR). The current study uses Ecological Momentary Assessment to assess how four environmental contexts (locations, activities, social interactions, social interacti…

Privacy-Preserving Social Ambiance Measure From Free-Living Speech Associates With Chronic Depressive and Psychotic Disorders.

A social interaction consists of contributions by the individual, the environment and the interaction between the two. Ideally, to enable effective assessment and interventions for social isolation, an issue inherent to depressive and psychotic illnesses, the isolation must be identified in real-time and at an individual level. However, research addressing sociability deficits is largely focused on determining loneliness, rather than isolation, and lacks focus on the richness of the social environment the individual revolves in. In this paper, We describe the development of an automated, objec…

Performance-only Social Anxiety as a Distinct Clinical Profile: Evidence from Obsessive Beliefs, Alexithymia, and Cognitive Flexibility in Adolescent Girls with Social Anxiety Disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) in adolescent girls is clinically heterogeneous, yet the cognitive and emotional processes distinguishing performance-based, interaction-based, and combined presentations remain poorly characterized. In this case-control study, 219 adolescent girls aged 12-18 years were recruited from four child and adolescent psychiatry outpatient clinics and assigned, via K-SADS-PL-guided diagnostic evaluation, to four groups: performance anxiety only (SA - PA+; n = 52), social interaction anxiety only (SA + PA-; n = 50), combined social interaction and performance anxiety (SA +…

Associations between psychological stress, discrimination, and oral health-related quality of life: the buffering effects of social support networks.

Stress and discrimination negatively affect quality of life, but social support may buffer their effects. This study aims: (1) to examine the associations between psychological stress, discrimination, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL); and (2) to assess whether social support, stress and discrimination interact to modify their associations with OHRQoL. We used cross-sectional household-based data from a study including 396 individuals aged 14 years and over from families registered for government social benefits in a city in Southern Brazil. OHRQoL was measured with the Oral Imp

A Benchmark Dataset for Rat Social and Aggressive Behavior Classification.

Social interactions are central to behavioral and systems neuroscience, yet progress in understanding their neural basis depends on reliable and scalable behavioral quantification. However, standardized datasets, transparent annotation schemes and reproducible benchmarks for social-behavior classification remain limited. Here, we present a curated video dataset of rat social interactions recorded under the resident-intruder paradigm. The dataset covers non-social, social and aggressive behaviors, with aggression-related episodes further annotated into ethologically defined fine-grained subtype…

Social realities in remote villages: Infant and young child feeding in Kirewa, Uganda.

Understanding infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices in Africa requires an examination of the social context. Social relationships influence people through mechanisms such as social support, social influence, social engagement, access to resources and negative social interactions. This study explores how these mechanisms manifest in IYCF in remote villages in Uganda. In 2018, we conducted two focus group discussions each with mothers, fathers and grandparents, ande interviews with two clan leaders, six village health teamers (VHT) and four healthcare workers (HCW). We deductively sear…

Alternative Brain Connectivity Underscores Age-Related Differences in the Processing of Interactive Biological Motion.

Rapidly recognizing and understanding others' social interactions is an important ability that relies on deciphering multiple sources of information, for example, perceiving body information and inferring others' intentions. Despite recent advances in characterizing the brain basis of this ability in adults, its developmental underpinnings are virtually unknown. Here, we used fMRI to investigate which sources of social information support superior temporal sulcus responses to interactive biological motion (i.e., 2 interacting point-light human figures) at different developmental intervals in h…

Social Anxiety and Loneliness in Adults Who Solicit Minors Online.

This study examined the association of social anxiety, loneliness, and problematic Internet use (PIU) with the online solicitation of minors. Within a convenience sample of adult Internet users from Germany, Finland, and Sweden ( N = 2,828), we compared the responses of participants who had not interacted sexually with strangers online ( n = 2,049) with participants who sexually interacted with unknown adults online ( n = 642), and both groups with adults who sexually solicited unknown minors online ( n = 137). Online sexual interaction with adults was associated with higher levels of social a

Combined effect of self-perceived voice disorders and hearing loss on social acts in older adults: a 1-year longitudinal study.

[Purpose] Self-perceived voice disorders (VD) and hearing loss (HL) are common communication barriers in older adults, yet their combined impact on social participation remains underexplored. This study examined the additive effects of self-perceived VD and HL on frequency of going out (FGO) and social interactions in community-dwelling older Japanese adults. [Participants and Methods] In this longitudinal study, 134 adults aged ≥65 years were surveyed at baseline and one year later. Self-perceived VD and HL were assessed using Voice Handicap Index-10 (cutoff ≥5) and Hearing Handicap Inventory…

The effect of an osteoarthritis adaptation program on biological, psychological, and social integrity variables and quality of life in older women with osteoarthritis in Korea: a quasi-experimental study.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine whether an osteoarthritis adaptation program increased biological, psychological, and social integrity variables and quality of life in older women with osteoarthritis in Korea. METHODS: This study employed a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design, allocating 51 older women with osteoarthritis to an experimental group (26 participants) and a control group (25 participants). The program was conducted thrice weekly for 12 weeks, with each session lasting 60 to 90 minutes. It combined exercises (flexibility, muscle strength, and aerobic) and e

Embryonic alcohol exposure leading to social avoidance and altered anxiety responses in adult zebrafish.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is a syndrome characterized by neurological and behavioral impairments. A recently discovered hallmark of FASD is impaired social behavior. Avoidance of social interaction typical of FASD may be the result of increased anxiety. Previously, the zebrafish was successfully used to model embryonic alcohol induced social abnormalities. Here, we analyzed both anxiety and social responses using a zebrafish FASD model, in adult fish. We exposed zebrafish embryos to low concentrations of ethanol (0.1%; 0.25%; 0.5% and 1% v/v) for 2h at, 24h post-fertilization, to…
