OBJECTIVES: To validate the disease-specific quality of life (QoL) instrument for pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (PIBD) patients in three Indian languages (Hindi, Tamil and Bengali). Additionally, also to reveal the significant factors which effect QoL of PIBD patients in India.
METHODS: One hundred and two (102) PIBD patients (mean age 13 ± 2.59 y) across 6 centres were enrolled. Each child completed two questionnaires - the IMPACT-III and Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory Version 4.0 Generic Core Scale (PedsQL™) - in one of the three languages. A uniform clinico-demographic proform

BACKGROUND: Compared to the general Canadian population, military members exhibit a higher prevalence of depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder. However, there is a paucity of research investigating the extent to which military members experience positive mental health. Validation of positive mental health measures, including the Mental Health Continuum - Short Form (MHC-SF), is necessary to determine whether well-being can be assessed in a valid and reliable manner among Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) military members. The purpose of this research was to asse

PURPOSE: There has been little community-based research regarding multiple-type victimization experiences of young people in Asia, and none in Malaysia. This study aimed to estimate prevalence, explore gender differences, as well as describe typical perpetrators and family and social risk factors among Malaysian adolescents.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 1,870 students was conducted in 20 randomly selected secondary schools in Selangor state (mean age: 16 years; 58.8% female). The questionnaire included items on individual, family, and social background and different types of victimiza

AIMS: Our study has two goals: to evaluate variation in symptoms of substance abuse/dependence by family structure and to examine several potential explanations for this association, including differences in socio-economic status, social support, social stress and perceived approval and use of substances by family and friends.
DESIGN: Ordinary least squares (OLS) regression is used to examine the association between family type and problematic substance use and to assess the hypothesized mediators.
SETTING: Data were collected between 1998 and 2000 as part of a study of the prevalence and so

Although research has found an association between social anxiety and alcohol use in noncollege samples, results have been mixed for college samples. College students face many novel social situations in which they may drink to reduce social anxiety. In the current study, the authors tested a model of college problem drinking, incorporating social anxiety and related psychosocial variables among 228 undergraduate volunteers. According to structural equation modeling (SEM) results, social anxiety was unrelated to alcohol use and was negatively related to drinking consequences. Perceived drinkin

BACKGROUND: Children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN) require more support than the average of their peers. Support systems for CSHCN were particularly affected by pandemic control measures. Perceived social support is a resource for health and wellbeing for CSHCN and their families. Associations of social support, mental health and socioeconomic status (SES) have been described. This study aims to (1) assess perceived social support in families with and without CSHCN; (2) describe structure and types of social networks of families with and without CSHCN; and (3) explore associations betw

OBJECTIVE: The present study was undertaken to explore multilevel determinants of planning to continue to drink alcohol after leaving public drinking events. We assessed whether individual-level factors, group-related factors, or event-level bar characteristics were associated with post-bar drinking.
METHOD: We recruited a total of 642 participants from 30 participating bars in urban Southern California. Groups who arrived to patron a bar were interviewed upon their entrance and exit. Given data nesting, we employed a multilevel modeling approach to data analysis.
RESULTS: More than one-thir

The Bivalent Fear of Evaluation model posits that individuals with social-anxiety experience both Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE) and Fear of Positive Evaluation (FPE). Previous research has empirically supported a two-factor structure comprising FNE and FPE. More recently, theoretical reviews and empirical studies have turned to a broader construct, Fear of General Evaluation (FGE). Here, we sought to examine the existence and validity of FGE in two samples (644 Chinese undergraduates and 448 junior high school students). We captured two distinct measures of FNE and FPE, along with mental-h

Disease outbreaks can severely affect populations in the wild. However, their consequences on individual social behaviour and population demography are poorly understood. We used a multi-site capture-recapture model to investigate the impacts of a yellow fever outbreak on the endangered golden lion tamarin Leontopithecus rosalia, in the fragmented Atlantic forest, Brazil. Annual adult survival rate severely declined in 2017-2018, coinciding with the outbreak period. Simultaneously, dispersal patterns changed temporarily, with a reduction of settlement time for individuals dispersing within the

Social network analysis (SNA) can be used to explore a population's social structure and how individuals contribute to social cohesion. Quantifying relationships between individuals in a network can vary depending on the data available or the relationship of interest. Studies of readily visible species can use direct interaction measures in SNA, while studies of cryptic species usually rely on the 'gambit of the group'; individuals observed in a group are considered associates. This study compared the association and pectoral fin contact (PFC) networks of Atlantic spotted dolphins around Bimin…

Voluntary vaccination reflects how individuals weigh the risk of infection and the cost of vaccination against the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases, such as smallpox and measles. In a homogeneously mixing population, the infection risk of an individual depends largely on the proportion of vaccinated individuals due to the effects of herd immunity. While in a structured population, the infection risk can also be affected by the structure of individuals' social network. In this paper, we focus on studying individuals' self-organizing behaviors under the circumstance of voluntary vaccinatio

Although studies have suggested a strong overlap between social anxiety disorder and depression, this is the first study to examine the ability of commonly used measures to differentiate symptoms of these disorders in a sample of clients with social anxiety disorder. Structural equation modeling revealed that commonly used measures of social anxiety and depression can differentiate the two constructs, rather than simply reflecting a single construct of overall distress. Logistic regression analyses indicated that scores on depressive symptom measures could predict which socially anxious client

OBJECTIVE: To examine the characteristics associated with happiness in Japanese individuals with schizophrenia.
METHODS: A self-reported online survey was conducted in 2022 among individuals aged 20-75 years, including 223 and 1776 individuals with and without schizophrenia, respectively. We used a modified Poisson regression to assess the factors associated with happiness by calculating the age- and sex-adjusted prevalence ratios (PRs). We examined within-schizophrenia group differences by age and sex strata, and compared these stratified PRs between groups with and without schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The extent to which individuals can flexibly allocate their attention towards adaptive cues in the social environment may play an important role in the maintenance of social anxiety. Attentional control (AC) describes the top-down ability to regulate one's attention and cognitive resources. Although low AC has been linked to psychopathology broadly, the specific relation between AC and social anxiety disorder (SAD) remains poorly understood. The present study aimed to clarify the role of AC in SAD by examining unique associations between AC and several facets of social anxiety, abo

OBJECTIVE: As recognition of the importance of social determinants of mental health has increased, the limitations of clinical competence-enhancing interventions that do not emphasize this approach have emerged. The Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI) is a cultural competence intervention that emerges from a confluence of social medicine and medical anthropology traditions. Limited research has examined how patients respond to CFI questions on social-structural aspects of illness and care to assess whether the CFI adequately elicits information on social determinants of mental health.

Immigrant religious organizations in the United States are uniquely positioned to address critical issues beyond religion because of their moral, social and cultural prominence in community life. Increasingly, religious organizations have taken on a leadership role around health issues such as decreasing HIV/AIDS stigma and misinformation. However, there are barriers for some religious leaders and organizations in adopting new health programs, especially if the issue is seen as controversial. Our study examines how social network structures among religious members influence organizational acce

The deep integration of social media into daily routines has intensified concerns about problematic social media use among students, adversely affecting both educational outcomes and psychological well-being. Drawing on Social Cognitive Theory and Cognitive-behavioral Theory, this study investigates the roles of academic pressure, anxiety, and depression in the development of social media addiction, with particular attention to the mediating effect of self-control and the moderating role of social support. A survey of 900 college students collected data on these key variables. Structural equat

Research into the aetiology of social phobia can contribute to the prevention and treatment of socially anxious people. Based on the theory of social skills deficits, we reviewed several studies that examined the adequacy of social behaviour through behavioural experiments with the purpose of evaluating the existence of lack of social skills in socially anxious people compared with the general population. In addition to electronic searches for papers published since 1970, using Medline, Scielo and Lilacs, references from articles were identified. In general, the results indicate that socially

Rigid, repetitive behaviors (RRBs) as a part of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are perplexing and challenging to treat effectively. First, how is it that they associate with deficits in social communication and social interaction to create a strong symptomatic association for the DSM-5 diagnosis of ASD?1 Deficits in social communication make sense in how they define a developmental disorder, but what is the mechanism by which social interaction and RRBs connect to define the classification of ASD? Perhaps it is that, rather than by neurotransmitters or linked structural brain regions, ASD is a
