Low-tone air-bone gaps after endolymphatic sac surgery.

OBJECTIVES: We detected chronic low-tone air-bone gaps (LTABGs) in some patients with Meniere's disease after endolymphatic sac surgery. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the mechanism of LTABGs after endolymphatic sac surgery. METHODS: We investigated 50 patients with Meniere's disease, who underwent surgery more than two years prior. LTABGs were defined as the three-tone-average=20dB formulated by (a+b+c)/3, where a, b, and c are ABGs at 0.25, 0.5, and 1kHz, respectively (ABG ±). The intra-operative finding was focused on identifying operculum (OPC ±). RESULTS: The ratio of pos

Auditory processing deficits in rats with neonatal hypoxic-ischemic injury.

Hypoxia-ischemia (HI) refers to reduced blood oxygenation and/or a diminished amount of blood perfusing the brain, and is associated with premature birth/very low birth weight (VLBW). HI represents a common cause of injury to the perinatal brain. Indeed, a significant number of premature/VLBW infants go on to demonstrate cognitive/behavioral deficits, with particularly high incidence of disruptions in language development. Auditory processing deficits, in turn, have been suggested to play a causal role in the development of language impairments. Specifically, the inability to identify fast ele

Digital measurement of ocular microtremor in Parkinson's Disease: Analytical and clinical validation.

Ocular microtremor (OMT) is an involuntary fixational eye movement linked to brainstem activity. OMT is thought to have a mean frequency range of 70-90 Hz in healthy adults. Previous research suggests OMT may be reduced in neurological diseases like Parkinson's Disease. Historically, OMT has been measured invasively in specialist laboratories using lengthy and expensive protocols. Developments now allow for OMT measurement quickly and non-invasively using hand-held technology (i.e., iTremor ONE). This pilot study aimed to examine the analytical and clinical validation of OMT measurement via th

Children using a unilateral cochlear implant and contralateral hearing aid: bimodal hearing outcomes when one ear is outside the UK (NICE 2009) audiological criteria for cochlear implantation - a single site case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: In the new revised National Institute for Health & Care Excellence (NICE, TA566, 2019) guidelines for cochlear implantation (CI) have clearly stipulated that the hearing loss must be bilateral. Prior to this revision, children and young people (CYP) with asymmetrical thresholds have been considered for unilateral CI when one ear was in audiological criteria. Children with asymmetrical hearing loss represent an important cohort of potential CI candidates, who will continue to be prevented from benefiting from CI unless evidence is produced to support implantation and maximise subs

Validity and Reliability of the Turkish Version of the Communicative Effectiveness Index (CETI-TR) in Post-Stroke Aphasia.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of communication in individuals with aphasia requires tools that capture not only linguistic abilities but also functional communication in everyday life. The Communicative Effectiveness Index (CETI) is a widely used caregiver-reported measure; however, a validated Turkish version is not currently available. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to culturally adapt the CETI into Turkish (CETI-TR) and to examine its validity and reliability in individuals with aphasia. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 55 individuals with stroke (20 with aphasia, 35 without aphasia) an

Clinical Efficacy and Dosing of Vibrotactile Coordinated Reset Stimulation in Motor and Non-motor Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease: A Study Protocol.

Enhanced neuronal synchronization of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is commonly found in PD patients and corresponds to decreased motor ability. Coordinated reset (CR) was developed to decouple synchronized states causing long lasting desynchronization of neural networks. Vibrotactile CR stimulation (vCR) was developed as non-invasive therapeutic that delivers gentle vibrations to the fingertips. A previous study has shown that vCR can desynchronize abnormal brain rhythms within the sensorimotor cortex of PD patients, corresponding to sustained motor relief after 3 months of daily treatment. To

[Early diagnosis and selection of operative approach for acoustic neuroma (author's transl)].

The recent advances of various diagnostic procedures made possible to detect intracanalicular neuroma in early stage. The operative results have been also greatly improved by transtemporal approach using surgical microscope and dental burr. In addition, the revised suboccipital approach contributed to obtain better operative results. Reviewing our clinical experiences with 15 cases operated from May 1969 to December 1971, appropriate combination of applicable diagnostic procedures and selection of operative method are discussed. Multiple audiologic examinations consisting of pure tone audiomet

Toward a visualized classifier for depression: characterization of hemodynamic patterns using time-domain fNIRS.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a chronic illness associated with considerable morbidity and is characterized by high rates of recurrence and relapse. Early and accurate identification of depressive symptoms results in better treatment outcomes. However, the current diagnostic process relies mainly on subjective clinical interviews, underscoring the need for cost-effective physiological markers. METHOD: Increasing evidence suggests that alterations in neurovascular processes affect the cognitive and brain functions of individuals with MDD. This study introduced a time-domain fu

Neural representation of phonological wordform in temporal cortex.

While the neural bases of the earliest stages of speech categorization have been widely explored using neural decoding methods, there is still a lack of consensus on questions as basic as how wordforms are represented and in what way this word-level representation influences downstream processing in the brain. Isolating and localizing the neural representations of wordform is challenging because spoken words activate a variety of representations (e.g., segmental, semantic, articulatory) in addition to form-based representations. We addressed these challenges through a novel integrated neural d
