CT anatomy of the head in the Ile de France sheep.

BACKGROUND: CT scan images provide accurate anatomical data from different areas of the body that can be used to diagnose diseases. OBJECTIVES: The present work aimed to describe the normal anatomical structures of the Ile de France sheep head and its morphometric and volumetric properties using computed tomography (CT) and stereological methods. METHODS: Five adult Ile de France sheep heads, which were of mature age (above 10 months), were included in this study. The different cavities of the head, including the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, orbital cavity and vestibulocochl

A model for classification of invasive fungal rhinosinusitis by computed tomography.

Our purpose was to classify acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (AIFR) caused by Mucor versus Aspergillus species by evaluating computed tomography radiological findings. Two blinded readers retrospectively graded radiological abnormalities of the craniofacial region observed on craniofacial CT examinations obtained during initial evaluation of 38 patients with eventually pathology-proven AIFR (13:25, Mucor:Aspergillus). Binomial logistic regression was used to analyze correlation between variables and type of fungi. Score-based models were implemented for analyzing differences in laterality

A rare case of breast cancer metastasising to the nasopharynx and paranasal sinuses.

INTRODUCTION: Metastatic spread from non-head and neck tumours to the sinonasal region is exceedingly rare. We present a case of breast cancer metastasis to the nasopharynx, ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. To date there have been only two similar cases in the literature. We discuss the diagnosis and management of such cases and propose how they may be staged. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 75-year-old woman with past medical history of breast carcinoma, presented clinically as having a primary sinonasal malignancy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a lesion involving the spenoid and ethmoi

Extranodal nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma of the palate and paranasal sinuses.

BACKGROUND: Extranodal nasal-type natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma represents a rare entity, typically originating in the nasal cavity, palate or midfacial region. Signs and symptoms include non-specific rhinitis and/or sinusitis, nasal obstruction, epistaxis, facial swelling and development of deep necrotic ulceration in the midline of the palate, causing an oronasal defect. Differential diagnosis includes fungal infections, Wegener's granulomatosis, tertiary syphilis, other non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and malignant epithelial midline tumors. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 40-year-old ma

[Effect of endoscopic sinus surgery on airflow of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses: a computational fluid dynamics study.].

OBJECTIVE: To study the airflow velocity, trace, distribution, pressure, as well as the airflow exchange between the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses in a computer simulation of nasal cavity pre and post virtual endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). METHODS: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique was applied to construct an anatomically and proportionally accurate three-dimensional nasal model based on a healthy adult woman's nasal CT scans. A virtual ESS intervention was performed numerically on the normal nasal model using Fluent 6.1.22 software. Navier-Stokes and continuity equations wer

[Unilateral benign choanal polyp: review of 51 patients].

INTRODUCTION: Choanal polyps are a benign pathology arising in the sinusal mucosa and entering the nasal fossa heading for the choana. It is a unilateral condition mainly affecting young people. It must be surgically removed, with exeresis of both the nasal and the sinusal lesions. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A retrospective review has been made of 51 patients treated for choanal polyp at our centre. They were diagnosed through physical examination, nasal endoscopy, nasosinusal CT, and histological examination of biopsy from the mass in selected cases. RESULTS: The choanal polyps originated in the

Assessment of low-dose paranasal sinus CT imaging using a new deep learning image reconstruction technique in children compared to adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction V (ASiR-V).

PURPOSE: To compare the effects of deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) and adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction V (ASiR-V) on image quality in low-dose computed tomography (CT) of paranasal sinuses in children. METHODS: Low-dose CT scans of the paranasal sinuses in 25 pediatric patients were retrospectively evaluated. The raw data were reconstructed with three levels of DLIR (high, H; medium, M; and low, L), filtered back projection (FBP), and ASiR-V (30% and 50%). Image noise was measured in both soft tissue and bone windows, and the signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and contrast-

[Distant metastases to nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses, from the organs outside the head and neck].

INTRODUCTION: The metastases from below the clavicles, to the head and neck region, are relatively uncommon, and usually demonstrate during the progression of the primary disease. At that time, the correct diagnosis requires only to compare the pathology report from the primary biopsy, with the biopsy from the lump in the head and neck. The majority of distant metastases to the head and neck region are localized within the lymph nodes. The metastases to nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are very rare and usually localized within the maxillary sinus. MATERIAL: 4 cases, out of 46 all distant m

Intraoperative computed tomography in otorhinolaryngology.

CONCLUSIONS: Intraoperative CT surgery provides the surgeon with additional information about the altered surgical site in difficult anatomical situations. The skull base and lamina papyracea may be revealed by means of intraoperative CT, which may be beneficial in endonasal sinus surgery involving difficult surgical sites, although individual ethmoid cells cannot be assessed owing to blood artefacts. This provides the surgeon with valuable information that may facilitate the procedure considerably. In soft-tissue surgery it is advisable to apply a contrast agent in order to achieve good soft-

Adult-onset juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma with delayed adult recurrence managed by revision endoscopic resection and external carotid branch ligation.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a histologically benign but highly vascular skull-base tumor classically seen in adolescent males; adult-onset disease is rare and may be overlooked. Reports of JNA presenting in adulthood with recurrence occurring entirely in adulthood remain scarce. We report a 34-year-old man with recurrent left-sided epistaxis and intermittent nasal obstruction three years after endoscopic resection at age 31 for histologically confirmed JNA. Endoscopy demonstrated a soft mass arising from the left sphenopalatine region. CT showed recurrent disease involving th

Sphenoclival Intraosseous Lipoma: A Typical Lesion at an Atypical Location.

In this report, we present the case of a rare tumor in the sphenoclival region and discuss the potential pitfalls in its diagnosis and management. Intraosseous lipoma is a rare benign tumor, mostly accounting for 0.1% of all bone tumors. The disease is usually asymptomatic and mainly involves the hips, vertebrae, ribs, and metaphysis of the long bones. However, the intraosseous lipoma of the skull is less common, especially with few cases having been reported to involve the sphenoid bone in the literature. We present a rare case of sphenoclival intraosseous lipoma in a 28-year-old female who p

Anatomical Correlates and Subtleties of Surgery for Pituitary Tumors- A Review of Personal Understanding.

The authors review the anatomy of the pituitary gland on the basis of cadaver dissection studies and anatomy of dural relationships of pituitary tumors and its extensions on the basis of a 35-year-old experience of surgically treating pituitary tumors. Perfect understanding of anatomical correlates and nuances of pituitary tumor surgery is essential to achieve satisfactory surgical results. The pituitary gland is located in a specially enclosed cavity that is neither intracranial nor extracranial. It is covered strategically by meninges. Pituitary gland has a close relationship with cavernous

Interesting case of base of skull mass infiltrating cavernous sinuses.

A man aged 35 years presented with chronic headache and earache of 1-year duration. He had progressive vision loss and diplopia since last 9 months. He also had pain over the face and episodic profuse epistaxis. On examination, perception of light was absent in the right eye and hand movements were detected at 4 m distance in the left eye. Imaging revealed a lobulated mass in the nasopharynx extending into the bilateral cavernous sinuses and sphenoid sinus with bony erosions. Biopsy of the nasopharyngeal mass revealed pathological features which are characteristic of IgG4 disease. His serum Ig

Isolated Osteoma of the Ascending Process of the Maxilla.

BACKGROUND: Osteoma, the most common benign tumor of the paranasal sinuses, most commonly originates within the frontal sinus, followed by the ethmoid, the maxillary sinus, and finally sphenoid. Only 2 cases of osteomas of the nasal bones were previously reported. This study describes the first reported osteoma of the ascending process of maxilla and describes its management. METHODOLOGY: A 20-year-old man was presented with left painless hard nasal swelling. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed well-circumscribed hyperdense bony mass originating from the outer surface of the left ascending p

Recurrent pituitary apoplexy due to two successive neoplasms presenting with ocular paresis and epistaxis.

UNLABELLED: A case of recurrent pituitary apoplexy is described in a 72-year-old man who initially presented with haemorrhage in a non-functioning pituitary adenoma. Five years later, he re-presented with a severe pituitary haemorrhage in an enlarging sellar mass invading both cavernous sinuses causing epistaxis and bilateral ocular paresis. Subsequent histology was consistent with a sellar malignant spindle and round cell neoplasm. Multiple pituitary tumours have previously been reported to coexist in the same individual, but to our knowledge this is the only case where two pathologically dis

Chronic facial pain and Meckel cave masses as the initial presentation of neurosarcoidosis: a case report.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease that can affect virtually every organ system, leading to a wide variety of clinical manifestations. Central nervous system involvement producing neurologic symptoms can occur in patients with sarcoidosis, yet rarely are these symptoms the initial manifestations of the disease. Here we present the case of a 38-year-old man who presented with a history of chronic facial pain, blurred vision, increased lacrimation, and periodontal abscesses. Physical examination revealed no evidence of infection or neoplasm. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed space-

[Pituitary adenoma penetrating the sphenoidal sinus and nasal cavity: a case report].

We describe a case of pituitary adenoma penetrating to the sphenoidal sinus and nasal cavity in a patient with recurrent nasal polyps. Histopathological examination of the removed polyps revealed transitional carcinoma. CT and MRI of the head showed a solid tumour filling the spheniodal sinus and the sella, penetrating to posterior ethmoid cells and superior nasal duct. In hormonal investigations increased concentration of prolactin (PRL) was found. Histopathological examination performed after neurosurgical operation revealed pituitary adenoma, and the diagnosis of pituitary adenoma was estab
