COMPARISON OF STRAINS OF SPOROTRICHUM SCHENCKII ISOLATED FROM NATURE.

Howard, Dexter H. (University of California, Los Angeles) and G. F. Orr. Comparison of strains of Sporotrichum schenckii isolated from nature. J. Bacteriol. 85:816-821. 1963.-Several strains of fungi, tentatively considered to be members of the genus Sporotrichum, have been isolated from soil and from other sources in nature. The striking morphological similarity of these isolates to strains of S. schenckii led to a comparative study of their biological properties. Nine strains of Sporotrichum from nature were compared with twelve strains of S. schenckii isolated from cases of clinical sporotr

Eucalyptus microfungi known from culture. 1. Cladoriella and Fulvoflamma genera nova, with notes on some other poorly known taxa.

A study of microfungi associated with living Eucalyptus leaves and leaf litter revealed several novel and interesting taxa. Cladoriella euca … onesia, while Torrendiella eucalypti is reported from leaf litter in Indonesia, and shown to have a Sporothrix-like anamorph. Leptospora rubella is reported from living Eucalyptus leaves in Colombia, where it is associated with leaf spots of Mycosphaerella longibasalis, while Macrohilumeucalypti is reported from leaf spots of Eucalyptus in New Zealand.

Antifungal activities of six South African Terminalia species (Combretaceae).

A serial microplate dilution method developed for bacteria was modified slightly and gave good results with several fungi. The antifungal activity of acetone, hexane, dichloromethane and methanol leaf extracts of six Terminalia species (Terminalia prunioides, Terminalia brachystemma, Terminalia sericea, Terminalia gazensis, Terminalia mollis and Terminalia sambesiaca) were tested against five fungal animal pathogens (Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, Aspergillus fumigatus, Microsporum canis and Sporothrix schenkii). Methanol extracted the highest quantity, but the acetone extracts had…

Exploring the Diversity and Distribution of Medico-Veterinary Fungal Diseases in Africa: Harnessing a Multisectoral One Health Strategy for Cost-Effective Prevention and Preparedness.

The diversity and distribution of medical and veterinary-relevant fungal diseases in Africa underscore the critical need for a multisectoral One Health strategy to enhance cost-effective preparedness and prevention. This review explores the geographic spread and epidemiology of key medical and veterinary fungi, including Emergomyces, Blastomyces, Coccidioides, Cryptococcus, Dermatophytes, Histoplasma, Sporothrix, Talaromyces, Paracoccidioides, Aspergillus, and Malassezia. Evidence indicates that many of these infections remain underdiagnosed and underreported, especially in vulnerable immunoco…

Immunity and Treatment of Sporotrichosis.

Species of the Sporothrix complex are the etiological agents of sporotrichosis, an important subcutaneous mycosis with several clinical forms and an increasing incidence around the world that affects humans and other mammals. The immunological mechanisms involved in the prevention and control of this mycosis are not entirely understood. Many reports have suggested that cell-mediated immunity has an essential role in the development of the disease, being the primary response controlling it, while only recent data supports that the humoral response is essential for the appropriate control. This …

[Simultaneous bilateral lymphangitic sporotrichosis].

BACKGROUND: Sporotrichosis is the most frequent subcutaneous mycoses in Jalisco, Mexico. The forms of transmission described in the literatu … cultures at temperatures of 25-28 degrees C. RESULTS: Gram and Ziehl Neelsen stains were negative. Sporothrix schenckii grew in the culture plates. Treatment with saturated potassium iodide solution was prescribed and four months later complete remissions of the lesions were achieved, and the control cultures were negative. CONCLUSIONS: The most common cli …

Outbreak of sporotrichosis among tree nursery workers.

In spring 1994, an outbreak of sporotrichosis occurred at a tree nursery in Florida; 9 (14%) of 65 workers involved in production of sphagnu … 05), and with having less gardening experience (P < .05). Wearing gloves was protective (P < .005). Sporothrix schenckii was cultured from patients and sphagnum moss used in topiary production. Use of restriction fragment length polymorphism revealed an identical pattern for patient isolates that was different from the patterns of environmental isolates. Phy …

Newer developments in therapy for endemic mycoses.

In the 1960s and 1970s, amphotericin B was the only effective therapy for serious systemic endemic fungal infections due to Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatitidis, and Sporothrix schenckii. In the 1980s, ketoconazole was introduced as therapy for endemic mycoses; after this antifungal agent was introduced, some of these infections could be treated orally in an outpatient setting rather than intravenously in an inpatient setting. The 1990s have become the triazole era. It is now standard practice to treat nonmeningeal, non-life-threatening histoplasmosis and blastomycosis orally on an…

The in-vitro antifungal spectrum of itraconazole.

The activity of itraconazole on 6113 fungal strains belonging to 252 species was evaluated in fluid media. The test medium was brain heart infusion broth for all fungi, except for Pityrosporum ovale, for which it was Dixon broth. Most of the human and animal pathogens and a large number of saprophytes were highly sensitive: dermatophytes, Candida, Cryptococcus, Torulopsis, Pityrosporum, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Sporothrix, dimorphic fungi, phaeohyphomycetes, agents of eufungal mycetoma, Entomophtorales and various others. The majority of Fusarium species and the Zygomycetes were poorly sensit…

Treatment of pulmonary sporotrichosis.

Pulmonary infection with Sporothrix schenckii is extremely rare. The small number of reported cases and lack of comparative clinical trials make assessment of treatment regimens difficult. Three modalities should be considered: Saturated solution of potassium iodide (SSKI), amphotericin B, and resective surgery. Available data suggest that SSKI is unlikely to be successful in cavitary disease or disease in immunocompromised hosts. Amphotericin B alone has been successfully used to cure cavitary pulmonary sporotrichosis, but overall cure rates probably are no higher than 50%, and the probabilit…

Spotting sporotrichosis skin infection: The first Australian paediatric case series.

AIM: Sporotrichosis is a dermatomycosis caused by the dimorphic fungus, Sporothrix schenckii, with various outbreaks across Australia attributed to mouldy hay. Our objective was to investigate the clinical presentation and management of cutaneous sporotrichosis in a paediatric population of Western Australia. METHODS: A retrospective case review was performed for S. schenckii infections in children below 18 years, between January 2000 and November 2017. Cases were identified from the state-wide laboratory database and additional clinical data obtained from medical records. RESULTS: Thirty-tw…

Disseminated cutaneous sporotrichosis in an immunocompetent individual.

Sporotrichosis is a subacute or chronic fungal infection caused by the ubiquitous fungus Sporothrix schenckii. Disseminated cutaneous sporotrichosis is an uncommon entity and is usually present in the immunosuppressed. Here, a case of disseminated cutaneous sporotrichosis in an immunocompetent patient is reported. This 70-year-old healthy woman presented with multiple painful ulcerated nodules on her face and upper and lower extremities of 6-month duration, associated with low-grade fever, night sweats, loss of appetite, and loss of weight. Histopathological examination of the skin biopsy reve…

Epidemiological findings and laboratory evaluation of sporotrichosis: a description of 103 cases in cats and dogs in southern Brazil.

Sporotrichosis is a subcutaneous mycosis, which affects mainly small animals, and is considered an important public health disease. This pap … eezing, serous nasal discharge and dyspnea were found in about 57% of the animals. The detection of Sporothrix schenckii in different clinical samples showed highest isolation in testicles (46.6%), oral cavity (45.2%) and conjunctival mucosa (38.1%). A differentiated histological pattern was found between the fixed cutaneous and disseminated cutaneous (DC) m …

Studies in sporotrichosis: fungal morphogenesis and pathogenicity in differing environments.

Sporothrix schenckii exhibits different morphology and pathogenic properties according to the source and circumstances of its growth. The present study considers the morphology and experimental pathogenicity in relation to - the 'wild' strains; the possible circumstances enhancing pathogenicity in strains recovered from the soil; the rate and nature of the transformational steps in morphology, in human and experimental infections by established pathogenic strains; the elimination of pathogenic strains to the surface of clinical lesions, enabling a simplified diagnostic proof of infection; the …
