Ankle sprains are a common sports-related injury, and female athletes are more likely to sustain this injury than their male counterparts. Previous reviews have evaluated the efficacy of prevention programs in reducing ankle sprains in athletes, but no reviews have specifically focused on female athletes. The objective of this systematic review was to examine the sex-specific effectiveness of neuromuscular training (NMT) programs in reducing the risk of ankle sprains in female athletes. A search of PubMed, Ovid Medline, Embase, and Web of Science databases was performed using the terms: (propr

RATIONALE: Sprains, stretching or tearing of ligaments are common injuries. Clinicians should try to prevent acupuncture-associated vasovagal responses (AAVR) when treating patients with such injuries. In this study, we report the treatment of frequent sprains of various body parts in a patient with a history of AAVR using only TA (a 7-herb extract consisting of Scutellaria baicalensis, Phellodendron amurense, Pulsatilla koreana, Sophora tonkinensis, Aucklandia lappa, Aquilaria agallocha, and Carthamus tinctorius L.) pharmacopuncture.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient was a 47-year-old woman who

BACKGROUND: Back pain in adolescents is very common and often seen in the office for evaluation of potential spinal pathology. Pediatric back pain has often thought to be from serious identifiable causes such as spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis, tumor, or infection. A follow-up analysis of adolescents initially presenting with back pain to their eventual subsequent diagnosis within 1 year has not been reported on a large scale with a national sample.
METHODS: A national insurance database (PearlDiver Patient Records Database) was queried for ICD-9 codes to identify patients aged 10 to 19 year

UNLABELLED: Clinical Scenario: Even though chronological aging is an inevitable phenomenological consequence occurring in every living organism, it is biological aging that may be the most significant factor challenging our quality of life. Development of functional limitations, resulting from improper maintenance and restoration of various organ systems, ultimately leads to reduced health and independence. Skeletal muscle is an organ system that, when challenged, is often injured in response to varying stimuli. Overt muscle-strain injury can be traumatic, clinically diagnosable, properly mana

The Revised Strain Index (RSI) is a distal upper extremity (DUE) physical exposure assessment model based on: intensity of exertion, frequency of exertion, duration per exertion, hand/wrist posture and duration of task per day. The RSI improves upon the 1995 Strain Index (SI) by using continuous rather than categorical multipliers, and replacing duty cycle with duration per exertion. In a simulation of 13,944 tasks, the RSI and 1995 SI showed good agreement in risk predictions for 1995 SI scores ≤3 (safe) and >13.5 (hazardous). For tasks with 1995 SI scores of >3 and ≤13.5, the two models show

Lumbrical strain is a relatively unknown hand injury. We report four cases of lumbrical origin strain involving the ring finger flexor tendons. Three patients sustained the injury during rock climbing and one while working with a jackhammer. In all cases, circumferential fluid around the flexor tendons of the ring finger was demonstrated on MRI and/or ultrasound at the distal palmar level at the "bare area," which is normally devoid of a synovial sheath. There is a paucity of information in the literature regarding this injury and its specific imaging features. Lack of awareness of this injury

Over the last 50 years, the surgical management of chronic lateral ankle ligament insufficiency has focused on 2 main categories: local soft-tissue reconstruction and tendon grafts/transfer procedures. There is an increasing interest in the arthroscopic solutions for chronic instability of the ankle. Recent biomechanical studies suggest the at least one of the arthroscopic techniques can provide equivalent results to current open local soft-tissue reconstruction (such as the modified Brostrom technique). Arthroscopic lateral ankle ligament reconstruction is becoming an increasingly acceptable

BACKGROUND: Wearing high heel shoes is thought to increase an individual's likelihood of experiencing a lateral ankle sprain. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of heel height on frontal plane kinematics, kinetics, and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the ankle joint during walking.
METHODS: Eighteen healthy women participated. Three-dimensional kinematics, ground reaction forces, and EMG signals of the tibialis anterior (TA) and peroneus longus (PL) were recorded as subjects ambulated in high (9.5~cm) and low (1.3~cm) heel shoes at a self-selected walking velocity. Pe

BACKGROUND: Syndesmosis (high ankle) sprains produce disruption of the distal tibiofibular ligaments. Forces on the distal fibula that produce these injuries are unknown.
METHODS: Twenty-seven fresh-frozen lower extremities were used for this study. A load cell recorded forces acting on the distal fibula from forced ankle dorsiflexion and applied external foot torque; medial-lateral and anterior-posterior displacements of the distal fibula were recorded. Fibular forces and axial displacements were also recorded with applied axial force.
RESULTS: During forced ankle dorsiflexion and external

Peroneal split syndrome refers to longitudinal tearing of the peroneus brevis tendon at the level of the retrofibular groove. It is an increasingly recognized, albeit frequently overlooked, cause of lateral ankle pain. Several surgical options have been documented for managing this entity, however there are no reports emphasizing the role of conservative treatment. A 48-year-old male patient presented to our department with persistent lateral ankle and hindfoot pain over the past 9 months, following an inversion injury to his right ankle. Magnetic Resonance Imaging demonstrated a longitudinal

The hamstring muscles were analyzed anatomically and physiologically to clarify the specific reasons for the incidence of muscle strain of the hamstrings. For the anatomical study, hamstring muscles of 13 embalmed cadavers were dissected. For the physiological study, the knee flexor torque and surface electromyographic (EMG) signals were measured during isometric contraction of hamstring muscles in 10 healthy adults. The biceps femoris muscle long head (BF-L) and semimembranosus muscle (SM) had hemi-pennate architecture and their fiber length per total muscle length (FL/TML) was smaller than t

This article describes the use of an acellular human dermal regenerative tissue matrix as an interpositional spacer to maintain the distance between the cuboid and navicular, and to prevent recurrence, following surgical excision of a cuboid-navicular tarsal coalition in an adult female. The use of this acellular matrix as an interpositional spacer has previously been documented for use in association with arthroplasty for the treatment of hallux rigidus. After more than 3 years of follow-up, the patient was progressing well and there was no evidence of recurrent coalition or consolidation of

This study investigated the ankle inversion and inversion velocity between various common motions in sports and simulated sprain motion, in order to provide a threshold for ankle sprain risk identification. The experiment was composed of two parts: firstly, ten male subjects wore a pair of sport shoes and performed ten trials of running, cutting, jump-landing and stepping-down motions. Secondly, five subjects performed five trials of simulated sprain motion by a supination sprain simulator. The motions were analyzed by an eight-camera motion capture system at 120 Hz. A force plate was employed

The orthopaedic nurse will undoubtedly care for patients with ankle injuries. Ankle sprains and fractures are common injuries seen in orthopaedic practices in the United States. To provide comprehensive nursing care of these injuries, nurses should understand ankle biomechanics as well as anatomy. Knowledge of fracture classification schemes, pathology of injury, and treatment modalities is also important. Fracture classification schemes vary as do treatment modalities. Ankle sprains and fractures can be treated operatively or nonoperatively, and orthopaedic nurses play an important role in th

PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis that ankles with functional instability will demonstrate greater single-limb postural sway (PS) than their contralateral stable joint and stable healthy controls and to examine the relationship between single-limb postural sway and muscular reaction time to a simulated ankle sprain mechanism.
METHODS: Nineteen male volunteers with a history of unilateral ankle sprain and functional ankle instability (FAI) and 19 healthy male controls performed 12 single-limb PS tests, 3 on each leg with and without vision. Participants provided informed consent. Postural sway d

Ankle sprains are one of the most common sport-related injuries treated by rehabilitation professionals. These injuries often result in lost participation and can lead to subsequent injury episodes. Therefore, it is important to determine appropriate means of preventing these injuries. There has recently been an increase in the popularity of balance training programs for the prevention of knee anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, with some thought that starting these programs in younger athletes may be most beneficial. However, there is the potential that these types of training programs m
