Innovative optical microsystem for static and dynamic tissue diagnosis in minimally invasive surgical operations.

During conventional surgical tasks, surgeons use their tactile perception in their finger tips to sense the degree of softness of biological tissues to identify tissue types and to feel for any abnormalities. However, in robotic-assisted surgical systems, surgeons are unable to sense this information because only surgical tools interact with tissues. In order to provide surgeons with such useful tactile perception, therefore, a tactile sensor is required that is capable of simultaneously measuring contact force and resulting tissue deformation. Accordingly, this paper discusses the design, pro

Chemical Reactivity of Confined Water under Surface Acoustic Wave Modulation.

Water is commonly regarded as a chemically inert medium in microfluidic systems, with chemical transformations attributed primarily to added reagents or catalysts. Here, we show that surface acoustic wave (SAW) actuation in a microfluidic channel establishes an electroacoustically modulated confined-water environment in which the intrinsic chemical reactivity of water is markedly enhanced. Focused SAWs impose a spatially heterogeneous physical field at the solid-liquid interface, characterized by localized electric fields distinct from static contact conditions. Within this environment, reacti

Eectrical grid linked to PV/wind system based fuzzy controller and PID controller tuned by PSO for improving LVRT.

This paper presents the use of a static synchronous compensators (STATCOM) device to improve the low voltage ride through (LVRT) ability of an electrical network consisting of wind farms that produce 9 MW and 1 MW PV stations during grid faults. A hybrid energy model is connected with 100 MVAR STATCOM at the point of common coupling (PCC) through line to line fault occurs on the grid. STATCOM control is used to detect the voltage at the PCC bus through occurring line to line (LL) faults by compensating reactive energy. A method of particle swarm optimization (PSO) is utilized for adjusting the

Balance Impairment in Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy: Where do We Stand?

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is one of the most frequent complications of diabetes mellitus (DM). This brief narrative review discusses the relationship between DPN and balance impairment. DPN may alter movement perception as a result of diminished proprioceptive and cutaneous input from skin, muscles and joints, leading to balance impairment. In everyday practice, diagnosis of impaired balance relies on a combination of clinical history, physical examination and functional tests, such as the Timed Up and Go test or the Berg Balance Scale, as well as instrumental assessments where avai

Relativistic Effects in Ligand Field Theory (I): Optical Properties of d1 Atoms in Oh' Symmetry.

Ligand field theory, which explains the splitting of degenerate nd atomic orbitals due to static electric fields from point-charge ligands, is rederived using Dirac orbitals instead of Schrödinger orbitals, specifically using the nd3/2 and nd5/2 spinors. This formalism is, to some extent, equivalent to incorporating the spin-orbit interaction either in the nd atomic orbitals or in the ligand field orbitals (e.g., the t2g and eg orbitals arising from Oh symmetry). The spin-orbit interaction is of fundamental importance in the description of the magnetic and optical properties of the 4d and 5d t

Sham transcranial electrical stimulation and its effects on corticospinal excitability: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Sham stimulation is used in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the efficacy of active stimulation and placebo effects. It should mimic the characteristics of active stimulation to achieve blinding integrity. The present study was a systematic review and meta-analysis of the published literature to identify the effects of sham transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) - including anodal and cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS, c-tDCS), transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) and transcranial pulsed current

True molecular solutions of natural cellulose in the binary ionic liquid-containing solvent mixtures.

Evidence is presented for the first time of true molecular dissolution of cellulose in binary mixtures of common polar organic solvents with ionic liquid. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, small-angle neutron-, X-ray- and static light scattering were used to investigate the structure of cellulose solutions in mixture of dimethyl formamide and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate. Structural information on the dissolved chains (average molecular weight ∼ 5 × 10(4)g/mol; gyration radius ∼ 36 nm, persistence length ∼ 4.5 nm), indicate the absence of significant aggregation of the dissolv

Notalgia paresthetica: clinical, physiopathological and therapeutic aspects. A study of 12 cases.

Notalgia paresthetica (NP) is a common but often unrecognized neurocutaneous condition, with very few cases reported to date. It is characterized by pruritus localized in an area between D2 and D6 dermatomes, sometimes accompanied by sensory neuropathies and/or electrical conductivity disorders. Cutaneous pigmented patches and friction amyloidosis can arise with irritation. Some hereditary cases have been noted mainly in young patients, associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A. However, NP mainly occurs in older patients and most are sporadic pathologies linked with musculoskeletal

Functional neuromuscular stimulation for combined control of elbow extension and hand grasp in C5 and C6 quadriplegics.

Spinal cord injury sustained at the C5/C6 level leaves an individual without voluntary control of the muscles of the forearm, hand, or of the elbow extensors. The objective of this research project was to integrate functional neuromuscular stimulation (FNS) control of elbow extension with a previously developed system that provides hand grasp in order to increase the working volume in space in which users can perform functional tasks. Elbow extension control was achieved by detecting the position of the arm in space and determining the magnitude of the gravitational moment acting to oppose ext

Titanium carbide, nitride and carbonitrides: a 13C, 14N, 15N and 47,49Ti solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance study.

The first 47,49Ti, 13C, 14N and 15N solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of titanium carbide, nitride and a series of cubic carbonitrides have been obtained under both static and magic-angle spinning (MAS) conditions. The 15N samples were isotopically enriched by gas-solid exchange at 1000 degrees C in a closed system. The Ti spectra of the carbide and nitride are sharp, reflecting the well defined cubic symmetry of these compounds, but become considerably broadened in the carbonitride series, with the spectra being approximately the sum of TiC and TiN together with some small

Effect of theophylline on respiratory neuromuscular drive.

To investigate the possible mechanisms by which theophylline affects the control of ventilation, neuromuscular drive and ventilatory function were examined in 7 healthy men receiving an incremental intravenous aminophylline dosing schedule to achieve plasma theophylline concentrations of 5, 10, and 15 micrograms/ml. As compared with the baseline (predose) values, the 3 incremental aminophylline doses significantly (p less than 0.05 to 0.01) increased occlusion pressure (P0.1) and maximum inspiratory pressure static (MIPS) at functional residual capacity (FRC). This was not observed for ventila

Degradation Behavior of Coated Metallic Stents: Influence of In Vitro Fluid-Dynamic Biostability Testing Conditions.

Coated metallic stents are the next generation of metallic stents with improved surface properties. To evaluate the degradation behavior of stents in vitro, different in vitro degradation models can be applied: (i) static immersion test: degradation under static fluid condition, (ii) fluid dynamic test: degradation under flowing fluid, and (iii) electrochemical corrosion test: degradation under the influence of electric potential. During these experimental procedures, stents interact with the simulated blood plasma, and degradation products are formed in the form of depositions on the stent su

Microbioreactor design for eukaryotic cell-based biomedical applications.

The eukaryotic cell-based biomedicine landscape is undergoing a paradigm shift, driven by the transition from static culture to highly controlled microbioreactor environments. This mini-review assembles high-value applications, including autologous cell therapies, recombinant protein production, induced pluripotent stem cell expansion, and organoid engineering. Technologically, we highlight how the integration of microfluidics into Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell manufacturing achieves numerical optimization of cell count and phenotypic distribution through automated, closed-loop workflows. Atrial cardiomyopathy as a multidomain disease: longitudinal evidence for autonomic remodelling.

AIMS: Atrial cardiomyopathy (AtCM) is increasingly recognized as a substrate for atrial fibrillation (AF), yet its operationalization remains limited and largely marker-driven. Whether autonomic remodelling represents a longitudinally evolving domain within a multidomain framework of AtCM remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether autonomic remodelling, assessed through static and longitudinal heart rate variability (HRV) abnormalities, defines a distinct domain of AtCM and contributes to atrial disease burden and clinical risk. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied 670 individuals aged 65

Time-dependent modulation of carotid body afferent activity during and after intermittent hypoxia.

Using gonadally intact female cats, we showed previously that estrogen, applied topically to the spinal cord, attenuated the exercise pressor reflex. Although the mechanism by which estrogen exerted its attenuating effect is unknown, this steroid hormone has been shown to influence spinal opioid pathways, which in turn have been implicated in the regulation of the exercise pressor reflex. These findings prompted us to test the hypothesis that opioids mediate the attenuating effect of estrogen on the exercise pressor reflex in both gonadally intact female and ovariectomized cats. We therefore a

Exposure to extremely-low-frequency electromagnetic fields and radiofrequency radiation: cardiovascular effects in humans.

Cardiovascular changes in humans exposed to nonionizing radiation [including extremely-low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF EMFs) and radiofrequency radiation (RFR)] are reviewed. Both acute and long-term effects have been investigated. In general, if heating does not occur during exposure, current flow appears to be necessary for major cardiovascular effects to ensue, such as those due to electric shock. Whereas most studies have revealed no acute effect of static or time-varying ELF EMFs on the blood pressure, heart rate, or electrocardiogram waveform, others have reported subtle effect

Identifying offline muscle strength profiles sufficient for short-duration FES-LCE exercise: a PAC learning model approach.

UNLABELLED: Functional electrical stimulation-induced leg cycle ergometry (FES-LCE) provides therapeutic exercise for persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, there exists no systematic approach to predict whether an individual has sufficient thigh muscle strength necessary for FES-LCE exercise. OBJECTIVE: To develop and test a Probably Approximately Correct (PAC) learning model as a predictor of thigh muscle strengths sufficient for short-duration FES-LCE exercise and compare the model's performance with other well-known statistical methods. METHODS: Six healthy male individuals with

Computer simulation: probing the dynamic binding mechanism of the azo pigment allure red to meat-derived proteins.

Elucidating the interactions between the azo dye Allura Red (AR) and meat-derived proteins is crucial for understanding its safe application in complex food systems. This study investigated the interactions between AR and actin (AC), glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), and myosin (MS) using molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations. Molecular docking results revealed that AR primarily binds to the central hydrophobic cavities of AC/GDH and the hydrophobic side-chain regions of MS. MM-PBSA calculations demonstrated binding strengths in the order GDH (-14.50 kJ/mol) > MS (-12.67 kJ/mol) >

Revealing the binding mechanism of BACE1 inhibitors through molecular dynamics simulations.

Alzheimer's disease is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder, and the Beta-Site Amyloid Precursor Protein Cleaving Enzyme 1 (BACE1) is a key therapeutic target in its treatment. This study employs molecular dynamics simulations and binding energy analysis to investigate the binding interactions between BACE1 and four selected small molecules: CNP520, D9W, NB641, and NB360. The binding model analysis indicates that the binding of BACE1 with four molecules are stable, except the loop regions show significant fluctuation. The binding free energy analyses reveal that NB360 exhibits the highest
