Marchiafava-Bignami disease in a patient with schizophrenia and alcohol use disorder.

Substance-related disorders are the most frequent comorbidity in schizophrenia. Concretely, alcohol is the most commonly consumed substance after tobacco. Patients with schizophrenia with this comorbidity have a worse clinical course and can develop serious neuropsychiatric complications. One of them, Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD) can be incorrectly diagnosed as a decompensation of their mental disorder.

Beyond Ergogenic Effects: Limited Evidence on Caffeine-Related Problematic Use, Dependence, and Withdrawal in Athletic Populations-A Structured Narrative Review.

Caffeine is widely used in sport and exercise because of its established ergogenic effects, yet problematic use, dependence, and withdrawal in athletic populations remain poorly characterized. This structured narrative review used a systematic database search and prespecified selection process to identify studies directly addressing problematic caffeine use, dependence, use disorder, withdrawal, tolerance, habituation, or misuse in sport- and exercise-related populations. PubMed, Web of Science Core Collection, and Scopus were searched from inception to 15 June 2026. Four studies met the eligi

The Association Between Regular Physical Activity and Depressive Symptoms Among Patients in Treatment of Alcohol and Substance Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol and other substance use disorders and major depression often co-occur. A sedentary lifestyle is related to major depression and even moderate exercise may prevent and contribute to the treatment of depression. Studies have found an effect of physical activity on depression in alcohol and other substance use disorder patients even in clinical settings. AIM: To investigate the relationship between level of physical activity and depressive symptoms over time in alcohol and substance use disorder inpatients. METHODS: Eighty-nine substance use disorder inpatients were followed

Borderline Personality Disorder: Clinical Guidelines for Treatment.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is fundamentally a syndrome composed of symptoms (primarily of emotional dysregulation) and a number of true personality traits (such as inordinate anger, impulsivity, and a tendency to stress-related paranoid ideation). Whereas schizotypal personality disorder, with its cognitive peculiarities (ideas of reference, odd beliefs, eccentric speech), is closely linked as a genetic condition-"borderline" to the major condition schizophrenia-BPD is less closely linked to bipolar disorder. Some cases of BPD are linked genetically to and are in the "border" of bip

The endocannabinoid system in borderline personality disorder and antisocial personality disorder: A scoping review.

Individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) or antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) are overrepresented in forensic settings. Yet, despite the burden these disorders place on healthcare and criminal justice systems, there remains a lack of evidence-based pharmacological treatments. Epidemiological data have shown that comorbid cannabis use disorders are common in BPD and ASPD. ∆9 -Tetrahydrocannabinol, the primary psychoactive constituent of cannabis, is an exogenous cannabinoid that stimulates the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Hence, an investigation of the ECS in these condition

A comparative review of the epidemiology of mental disorders in Australia and India.

Mental illness and substance use disorders have been increasing worldwide. Mental illness has a significant impact upon the lives of the individual as well as their loved ones. Mental disorders are known to result in a high level of disability. This article provides a comparative review of the epidemiology of mental disorders in Australia and India, summarizing and comparing prevalence rates in both countries based upon available data. Overall, it is evident that Australia has higher prevalence rates of mental disorders than India, across most diagnostic groups. Australia has the highest preva

Handedness in bipolar disorders is associated with specific neurodevelopmental features: results of the BD-FACE cohort.

OBJECTIVES: High rates of non-right-handedness (NRH) and mixed-handedness exist in neurodevelopmental disorders. Dysfunctional neurodevelopmental pathways may be implicated in the underlying pathophysiology of bipolar disorders (BD), at least in some subgroups. Yet little is known about correlates of NRH and mixed-handedness in BD. The objectives of this national study are to determine (i) the prevalence of NRH and mixed-handedness in a well-stabilized sample of BD individuals; (ii) if NRH/mixed-handedness in BD is associated with a different clinical, biological and neurocognitive profile. The predictive power of family history measures of alcohol and drug problems and internalizing disorders in a college population.

A family history (FH) of psychiatric and substance use problems is a potent risk factor for common internalizing and externalizing disorders. In a large web-based assessment of mental health in college students, we developed a brief set of screening questions for a FH of alcohol problems (AP), drug problems (DP) and depression-anxiety in four classes of relatives (father, mother, aunts/uncles/grandparents, and siblings) as reported by the student. Positive reports of a history of AP, DP, and depression-anxiety were substantially correlated within relatives. These FH measures predicted in the s

[Physical activity for mental health].

BACKGROUND: About 50% of the population will be affected by a mental disorder during their lifetime; the most common forms are mood and anxiety disorders and abuse of or dependence on drugs or alcohol. The standard forms of therapy are medication and various forms of psychotherapy. The cost of treating disease is escalating, and the health care system will never be able to meet the need for treatment in this large group of patients. Hence, development of effective self help strategies is important. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this paper, the scientific basis for promoting exercise as treatment f

The relationship of sexual abuse, early initiation of substance use, and adolescent trauma to PTSD.

This study explores relationships among childhood sexual abuse (CSA), age of substance use initiation, additional traumatic events, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a sample of adolescents. A history of CSA that preceded substance use was not related to an earlier age of substance use initiation. Early initiation of substance use predicted exposure to additional traumatic experiences. This relationship was partially mediated by engagement in risky behavior while under the influence of substances. Posttraumatic stress disorder was related to CSA, additional traumatic experiences and

Substance Use in Rural Central Appalachia: Current Status and Treatment Considerations.

The burden of substance use and especially the unmatched rates of overdoses in rural Central Appalachia highlight the need for innovative approaches to curb the initiation to drug misuse and to address current substance use disorders. Effective substance use interventions involve a thorough understanding of the region. In Central Appalachia, many of the barriers to treatment are shared with other rural and impoverished areas, including a lack of access to health care and lack of health care providers with specialized training. Parts of Appalachia also present their own considerations, includin

[Addiction--who is not affected?].

Addiction and addiction-related behaviour increased during the past decades. Several substances with psychoactive attributes, like opioids, cocaine or alcohol, can lead to dependence with physical and/or mental symptoms. In addition to substance-related addiction, non-substance-related dependence requires special attention. Increasing numbers of workaholics and patients suffering from internet-addiction, gambling or eating-disorders can be observed. To meet international treatment standards for addiction, diversification of therapy is necessary and, additionally, gender-related aspects in deve

User-Guided Enhancements to a Technology-Facilitated Resilience Program to Address Opioid Risks Following Traumatic Injury in Youth: Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Youth with traumatic injury experience elevated risk for behavioral health disorders, yet posthospital monitoring of patients' behavioral health is rare. The Telehealth Resilience and Recovery Program (TRRP), a technology-facilitated and stepped access-to-care program initiated in hospitals and designed to be integrated seamlessly into trauma center operations, is a program that can potentially address this treatment gap. However, the TRRP was originally developed to address this gap for mental health recovery but not substance use. Given the high rates of substance and opioid use

Substance use and duration of untreated psychosis in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Substance use and psychiatric disorders cause significant burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries. Co-morbid psychopathology and longer duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) can negatively affect treatment outcomes. OBJECTIVES: The study assessed substance use amongst adults with severe mental illness receiving services at a regional psychiatric hospital in KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa). We describe the prevalence and correlates of lifetime substance use and examine the association between substance use and DUP. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey recruited adults diag

Co-occurrence of substance use disorders and other mental disorders in people undergoing specific treatment for any of them in Spain.

The co-occurrence of substance use disorders (SUD) and other mental disorders (OMD) is assumed to be high but is, in fact, unknown in Spain; and it is approached from different healthcare networks. The objective of the present study was to know the prevalence of this co-occurrence, both in specific addiction treatment networks and in mental health networks, in Spain. An observational, multicenter cross study, with a randomized sample, of patients under treatment for SUD or OMD in different Autonomous Communities of Spain was carried out (N=1,783). Psychosis and conduct disorder in Greek forensic patients found not guilty by reason of insanity: Differences between patients with and those without a history of conduct disorder in childhood or adolescence.

Much epidemiological evidence converges in identifying distinct types of individuals suffering from schizophrenia who exhibit aggressive behavior: those with and those without a history of conduct disorder (CD) in childhood or adolescence. In this study a sample of Greek forensic patients suffering from psychotic disorders was examined regarding demographic, clinical, legal and psychometric characteristics. All patients had committed a crime and were found not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRIs) in a court of law. This study aims to clarify whether history of conduct disorder leads to greater

Anabolic steroid abuse: psychiatric and physical costs.

The psychiatric effects of anabolic-androgenic steroids (i.e., testosterone and its derivatives) have been less well studied than their physical effects but are reported to include depression, mania, psychosis, and aggression. Dependence can also occur, with withdrawal involving psychiatric and physical symptoms. Adverse effects of steroid abuse should be managed by discontinuing the drugs-by tapering if necessary-and by treating the symptoms.

Cognitive distortions among depressed and suicidal drug abusers.

A very high proportion of drug abusers have psychiatric problems, with depressive symptoms particularly common. Nonabusing depressed patients have been found to demonstrate elevated levels of cognitive distortions, relative to normals, and to benefit from therapies that address such cognitive distortions. The present study investigated the prevalence of cognitive distortions in a sample of 52 inpatient depressed and/or suicidal drug abusers. Levels of cognitive distortion were found to be comparable to those reported in other studies for noninpatient depressed subjects, but lower than those of
