BACKGROUND: Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is a major food crop worldwide. Low soil phosphorus content and drought are the main constraints on wheat production in Xinjiang, China.
METHODS: In this study, the ionic and metabolic responses of one wheat variety ("Xindong20") to drought stress simulated by using polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG-6000) were investigated under low phosphorus (LP) and conventional phosphorus (CP) conditions by analysing wheat mineral elements and metabolites. Besides, due to xanthohumol was the metabolite with the most significant difference in expression detected in "Xin

A myriad of metabolite signals have been proposed to operate in plants. By contrast to the situation in microbial and mammalian systems, however, except for those characterized in phytohormone research, there is a massive gap in information concerning the perception mechanism underlying non-hormonal metabolite signaling in plants. Here we critically evaluate current evidence for the role of sugars, nitrogen, amino acids, organic acids, polyamines and vitamins as signal metabolites. We discuss emerging concepts suggesting that plants may frequently rely on sensors, transceptors, and integrators

A secretory glycoprotein was isolated from the hamster sublingual gland. It contains 65% carbohydrates, the remainder being protein. The principal type of sialic acid was identified as N-acetylneuraminic acid with about 1/4 of the molecules O-acetylated. The hexosamine occurs mainly as N-acetylgalactosamine; other sugars present are galactose and fucose. The carbohydrate side chains are linked to the protein core by an O-glycosyl linkage between seryl and threonyl residues and N-acetylgalactosamine. The glycoprotein has an apparent molecular weight of 330,000. The sialogly coprotein may act as

Thermal processing substantially influences egg flavor quality, yet the metabolic basis underlying aroma development in quail egg yolk remains incompletely understood. In this study, GC-IMS, HS-SPME-GC-MS, lipidomics, and widely targeted metabolomics were integrated to characterize flavor-related metabolic changes during thermal processing. GC-IMS detected 48 VOCs, whereas HS-SPME-GC-MS detected 451 volatile features, of which 161 compounds with available odor threshold data were further evaluated by OAV analysis. Aldehydes, ketones, esters, and terpenoids predominated in cooked yolks. GC-IMS

Eight new resin glycosides, named calyhedins XXIV (1)-XXXI (8), were isolated from the rhizomes of Calystegia hederacea Wall. (Convolvulaceae), along with six known calyhedins: calyhedins II (9), III (10), IV (11), V (12), VIII (13), and XII (14). Their structures were determined from the spectroscopic data. Compounds 1-7 were hexa- or hepta-glycosides with macrolactone structures (jalapins), and their sugar moieties were partially acylated by five organic acids, including 2S-methylbutyric, (E)-2-methylbut-2-enoic, and 2R-methyl-3R-hydroxybutyric acids. Compounds 1-7 were macrolactones with 22

Soybean is one of the most important crops worldwide, being placed ninth on the chart of the most cultivated species. Its high level of production correlates with a huge amount of waste produced. These residues could be of great interest due to the presence of high-value-added molecules, including some glycosides (i.e., daidzin, genistin, glycitin) widely studied for their potent antioxidant properties. Due to their low bioavailability and limited solubility in lipidic media, lipophilization strategies have recently gained momentum to improve daidzin, genistin, and glycitin applications as mul

Pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic and generally fatal disorder characterized by progressive formation of scar-like tissue in the lungs. Sialic acids are often found as the terminal sugar on extracellular glycoconjugates such as protein glycosylations. Sialidases, also known as neuraminidases, desialylate glycoconjugates. Serum amyloid P (SAP), a pentameric serum glycoprotein that has two sialic acids on each polypeptide, inhibits the differentiation of monocytes into fibrocytes and promotes human PBMCs to accumulate high extracellular levels of IL-10. When SAP is desialylated with sialidase, the

Glycosphingolipids are located in cell membranes and the brain is especially enriched. We speculated that the subcellular location of glycosphingolipids depends on their fatty acid chain length because their sugar residues are constant, whereas fatty acid chain length can vary within the same molecule. To test this hypothesis we analysed the glycosphingolipid sulfatide, which is highly abundant in myelin and has mostly long fatty acids. We used a negative ion electrospray tandem mass spectrometry precursor ion scan to analyse the molecular species of sulfatide in cultured astrocytes and a mous

Improving the flavour of soybean-based ingredients remains challenging as soybeans naturally contain compounds that generate green and beany notes. This study evaluated how the surface-growing food-grade fungus Penicillium nalgiovense (PN), alone and together with selected yeasts and lactic acid bacteria, alters the chemistry and sensory attributes of soybeans during solid-state fermentation. PN showed strong proteolytic activity in the monoculture fermentation, producing the highest accumulation of free amino acids (1324 mg/100 g), while its combination with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (LP)

Ginkgo biloba leaves (GBLs) contain high phytoconstituents, but ginkgolic acids (GAs, the main toxic compound in GBLs) have limited its applications. Processing Ginkgo biloba dark tea (GBDT) using fixation technology could decrease the toxic compounds; retain flavonoids, ginkgolides, and bilobalide; and improve the product quality. For the first time, various thermal fixations (hot air fixation [HAF], iron pot fixation [IPF], and boiled water fixation [BWF]) followed by rolling, fermentation, and drying were applied to produce GBDT. A comprehensive analysis of the toxicants (GAs), main bioacti

Hypertension (HT) remains the leading cause of cardiovascular and premature death around the world. Diet is one of the important factors that contributes to the development of HT. We review the current evidence of how different dietary factors may influence blood pressure (BP) and consequent development of HT. There is evidence that BP is positively associated with higher consumption of sodium, alcohol, animal-based protein such as red meat, low-quality carbohydrates such as sugar-sweetened beverages, and saturated fatty acids. On the contrary, other dietary constituents have BP-lowering effec

Apples are predominantly stored in controlled atmosphere (CA) storage to delay ripening and prolong their storage life. Profiling the dynamics of metabolic changes during ripening and CA storage is vital for understanding the governing molecular mechanism. In this study, the dynamics of the primary metabolism of 'Jonagold' apples during ripening in regular air (RA) storage and initiation of CA storage was profiled. 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) was exploited to block ethylene receptors and to get insight into ethylene mediated metabolic changes during ripening of the fruit and in response to hy

This review presents hormonal responses to various cold exposures and their calorigenic effects in man and some animals. Previous studies in rats have shown that cold exposures activate the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis. Increased thyroid hormone concentrations lead to heat production via general stimulation of metabolism (obligatory thermogenesis) and possibly via activation of thyroid hormone receptors and uncoupling protein 1 (UCP 1) and deiodinase enzyme genes in the brown adipose tissue (BAT). In human subjects long-term cold exposures do not seem to activate the pituitary-thyroid a

We found for the first time that Zygomycetes species showed resistance to Aureobasidin A, an antifungal agent. A novel family of neutral glycosphingolipids (GSLs) was found in these fungi and isolated from Mucor hiemalis, which is a typical Zygomycetes species. Their structures were completely determined by compositional sugar, fatty acid, and sphingoid analyses, methylation analysis, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight/mass spectrometry, and (1)H NMR spectroscopy. They were as follows: Gal beta 1-6Gal beta 1-1Cer (CDS), Gal alpha 1-6Gal beta 1-6Gal beta 1-1Cer (CTS), Ga

Aptamers are oligonucleotides derived from an in vitro evolution process called SELEX. Aptamers have been evolved to bind proteins which are associated with a number of disease states. Using this method, many powerful antagonists of such proteins have been found. In order for these antagonists to work in animal models of disease and in humans, it is necessary to modify the aptamers. First of all, sugar modifications of nucleoside triphosphates are necessary to render the resulting aptamers resistant to nucleases found in serum. Changing the 2'OH groups of ribose to 2'F or 2'NH2 groups yields a
