Sugar Alcohol-Driven Synbiotic Confers Growth Promotion and Disease Resistance in Panax notoginseng.

The efficacy of synbiotic ("probiotic + prebiotic") strategies against soil-borne diseases is often limited by the low specificity of conventional prebiotics, which may also stimulate pathogens. Here, we developed a precision synbiotic system using a sugar alcohol mixture (SAs) as a selective substrate for the probiotic yeast Saitozyma podzolica (SP), while being poorly utilized by the root rot pathogen Ilyonectria vredehoekensis (I1). In Panax notoginseng, the synbiotic system simultaneously enhanced root biomass and reduced root rot incidence. Multiomics analyses revealed dual mechanisms und

Correlation between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and obesity among adults in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: In Saudi Arabia, obesity represents a major population health challenge, driven largely by unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, including excessive intake of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). Nevertheless, there is a lack of evidence on the interactions between different categories of beverages and lifestyle and behavior factors that will determine the risk of obesity. METHODS: This study used secondary data from the 2021 Sharik Diet and Health National Survey, a nationally representative cross-sectional phone survey in Saudi Arabia. A quota sampling approach stratified by age, sex, and

G-Computation Quantifying Caries Reduction by World Health Organization Sugar Limits in Children.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends reducing free sugar intake (FSI) to below 10%, and ideally below 5%, of the estimated energy requirement (EER) to prevent noncommunicable diseases, including dental caries. Little progress has been made in lowering FSI to reduce early childhood caries (ECC) over the past few decades. Although sugar's impact on health is well established, no studies have quantified the extent to which reducing FSI to these thresholds would reduce decayed, missing, and filled surfaces (dmfs) scores. Data from 2,182 Australian children in the SMILE birth cohort were

Effectiveness of nutrition counseling on reducing sugar intake amount and frequency: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a widespread oral health issue with significant medical and socioeconomic consequences. Despite preventive measures, nearly 90% of US adults have experienced caries, disproportionately affecting lower-income and minority populations. While fluoride use and oral hygiene practices help mitigate caries development, dietary sugar remains a primary driver. However, nutrition counseling in dental settings remains underutilized. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized, single-center, two-group clinical study assessed the impact of Stephan's curve-based nutrition counselin

Beyond the sugar tax: public acceptability of a comprehensive food policy bundle in urban Ghana.

BACKGROUND: The escalating burden of diet-related non-communicable diseases in Ghana has prompted the government to implement a 20% excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages through the Excise Duty (Amendment) Act 1108 of 2023. While fiscal measures have garnered significant advocacy, public health experts emphasize the need for a "double-duty" policy bundle, including food marketing restrictions, front-of-pack warning labeling, and public food procurement policies. The problem is that public support for this broader bundle remains understudied in urban Ghana, risking implementation failure. OB

Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Warning Labels and Taxes: Simulated Impacts When Considering Implementation.

INTRODUCTION: Sugar-sweetened beverage warning label and excise tax policies hold promise for preventing Type 2 diabetes. Population-level impacts of sugar-sweetened beverage policies have been projected using simulation models, but the authors are unaware of any assessing the effect of warning labels on Type 2 diabetes or the effects of warning label and tax effects using the same modeling assumptions. Simulation models have also rarely considered how policy implementation factors such as design and sustainment affect policy outcomes. METHODS: Microsimulation model of Type 2 diabetes develop

Low-Income Preschool Children's Free Sugar Consumption and Its Association With the Home Environment.

BACKGROUND: High consumption of sugary foods and beverages by young children has negative health effects; however, few studies have examined multiple domains of the home environment simultaneously or included sugars from 100% fruit juice. This study hypothesized that less favorable socio-cultural, built, and economic home environments would be associated with higher free sugar intake among low-income preschool children. METHODS: Caregivers (n = 170) of 3-5-year-old children enrolled in Head Start programs completed questionnaires assessing food and drink intake, home environment, and food par…

Genomic Expansion and Subgenome Expression Divergence of Sugar Transporters During Polyploid Evolution of Bamboos.

Sugar transporters play a pivotal role in photoassimilate partitioning and biomass accumulation in plants. However, how whole-genome duplication (WGD) has reshaped the evolutionary trajectory of the sugar transport system in Bambusoideae remains elusive. Here, we systematically identified and characterized the SUT (Sucrose Transporters) and MST (Monosaccharide Transporters) gene families across 14 bamboo genomes representing four major lineages: herbaceous, temperate woody, neotropical woody and paleotropical woody bamboos. Our results suggest that WGD acted as the primary driving force behind

Development and validation of whole-genome SSR markers in sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.).

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) is an important sugar and cash crop worldwide. To systematically characterize SSR (Simple Sequence Repeat) loci across sugar beet chromosomes and enable the precise identification of germplasm resources, this study conducted a genome-wide scan for SSR loci, analyzed their distribution patterns, and determined their genotypes using resequencing data from 123 sugar beet varieties. The results revealed an abundance of SSR loci in the sugar beet genome, with a total of 135, 379 identified, from which 135, 344 pairs of SSR primers were designed (135, 344 primer pairs s

When sugar takes your breath away: how diabetes accelerates COPD progression.

Diabetes is much more than high blood sugar. In this issue of EMBO metabolism, Chen et al (REF Chen et al 2026) show that hyperglycemia impairs the lung’s antiviral defense while driving excessive inflammation through the accumulation of harmful advanced glycation end products (AGEs). As viral infections are a major trigger of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations and can also worsen glycemic control, these findings provide a mechanistic explanation for the vicious cycle linking diabetes and COPD. By identifying AGEs as key mediators of impaired antiviral immunity, the stu

Parastomal hernia repair using retromuscular 3D funnel mesh: the "Sugar Funnel" technique.

INTRODUCTION: Parastomal hernias are a common and complex problem for patients and their surgeons. Despite multiple established repair strategies, recurrence rates remain high. We present a novel open retromuscular repair technique using a 3D funnel mesh. METHODS: The technique involves retrorectus dissection, transversus abdominis release (TAR), lateralisation of the stomal conduit, and retromuscular placement of a 3D funnel mesh. A second flat mesh reinforces the remaining retromuscular space. Abdominoplasty was performed where excess skin or fat contributed to the parastomal ‘bulge’. RESULT
