Hydrate-based CO2 sequestration is a promising carbon storage technology, but its practical application is hindered by slow formation kinetics. Understanding the nucleation mechanism at a molecular level is crucial for optimizing this process. Herein, systematic microsecond molecular dynamics simulations are employed to investigate the effect of nanoscale surface roughness on CO2 hydrate nucleation. These results indicate that nanoscale surface roughness acts as a kinetic promoter for CO2 hydrate nucleation. A clear inverse relationship between the degree of nanoscale surface roughness and the

Cellulose-based aerogels have been widely employed in flexible sensing applications. However, their inherent hydrophilicity and poor compressive toughness severely limit long-term stability in humid environments. To address this, a composite aerogel piezoresistive sensor with high elasticity, sensitivity, and moisture resistance was developed. Specifically, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCN) served as the structural scaffold, and electrochemically exfoliated graphene (EG) was introduced as the conductive filler. An anisotropic layered porous architecture was constructed via bidirection

Water-based fabrication holds promise for innovations in life sciences, electronics, and materials science at the biotic-abiotic interface by integrating living systems with high technologies. However, using water to create bio-nano interfaces is challenging, as it often requires surface pre-treatment and thermal processing, which are both harmful to living systems. Here, we propose silk fibroin (SF) as a natural adsorbate that enables the fabrication of high-density nanoparticle (NP) layers relying solely on water-based processing. We show that SF spontaneously adsorbs onto various NPs, enhan

Anionic clays, also known as layered double hydroxides (LDHs) or hydrotalcites, have recently emerged as a versatile class of ion-intercalated two-dimensional colloidal anionic clay materials capable of mimicking enzymatic functions. Their tunable composition, high surface charge density and advantageous interfacial features enable properly controlled redox and biocatalytic activities, positioning them as promising candidates for the design of enzyme mimicking materials, so-called nanozymes. This review integrates the structural chemistry of LDHs with their biocatalytic performance. Two main c

Overheating is a major cause of device failure. Thin-film evaporative cooling leverages the latent heat of liquid phase change, but its performance is often governed by the balance between interfacial liquid supply and interfacial mass-transfer kinetics. The canine tongue maintains a continuously wetted surface through rapid saliva replenishment and evaporation during thermoregulation. Here, previously unreported nanocilia on the tongue surface of the Beagle (Canis lupus familiaris) are identified. These nanocilia coat microscale papillae, revealing a naturally evolved micro-nano hierarchical

Label-free quantitative detection of chemically diverse molecules is of critical importance across fields spanning medical diagnostics, food safety, and law enforcement. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) provides powerful molecular identification through fingerprint spectra, capable of achieving single-molecule detection limits when analytes are positioned directly at the plasmonic hotspots of Au/Ag substrates. Yet conventional contact-mode SERS, which relies on the direct adsorption of analytes onto bare metal surfaces, is limited by poor reproducibility and signal heterogeneity aris

Surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors are widely employed for detecting dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP, a simulant of the chemical warfare agent sarin) due to their wireless and passive monitoring capability, digital output, and cost-effectiveness. Zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles are considered one of the most promising sensing materials for DMMP detection owing to their unique and strong surface interactions with phosphorus-containing compounds, as well as their excellent chemical and thermal stability. However, the practical deployment of ZrO2 SAW sensors faces significant challenges,

HYPOTHESIS: Membrane-active peptides are often described as "membrane targeting," yet peptide adsorption, vesicle leakage, and colloidal destabilisation are not necessarily coupled. We hypothesised that lipid composition controls access to distinct ensemble-level peptide-LUV interaction outcomes, and that sequence-derived variables bias these outcomes rather than encoding a single universal lytic mechanism.
EXPERIMENTS: Three tryptophan-rich cationic peptides (PuroA, P1, W7) were examined against composition-defined large unilamellar vesicles (LUVs) representing Gram-, Gram+, fungal, red bloo

Incoloy 800H is an iron-nickel-chromium based superalloy widely used in high-temperature applications, but its poor machinability due to rapid work hardening and low thermal conductivity makes machining difficult. This study experimentally investigates the machinability of heat-treated Incoloy 800H during CNC turning using laser-textured tungsten carbide cutting inserts combined with semi-solid MoS₂ lubrication. Four tool configurations were examined: non-textured (NT), parallel-textured (PT), elliptical-textured (ET), and semi-elliptical-textured (SCT) inserts. Turning experiments were perfor

This study evaluated the effect of glaze application protocols on surface roughness, translucency, and fatigue behavior of a lithium disilicate-based ceramic (CEREC Tessera, Dentsply, Germany). Discs (A2 HT shade; Ø = 10 mm; thickness = 1 mm) were fabricated and randomly assigned to three groups (n = 7 for roughness and translucency; n = 12 for fatigue): CTRL (crystallization only), CCG (combined crystallization/glaze firing), and C+G (crystallization followed by additional glaze firing). Surface roughness (Ra, Rz) was measured using a contact profilometer, and translucency (TP00) was calculat

Gas migration in high-temperature coal seams is governed by fracture-zone connectivity, fracture-surface roughness, and thermo-mechanical deformation. However, fracture roughness is often treated qualitatively or absorbed into empirical permeability, which limits its use in field-scale gas-hazard assessment. This study develops a thermo-hydro-mechanical coupled model for gas-bearing coal seams with fracture zones. A dimensionless roughness parameter is introduced to quantify the relative asperity height of fracture surfaces and link fracture morphology with equivalent permeability, gas desorpt

This study aimed to compare the surface morphology and antimicrobial/antibiofilm behavior of three semi-permanent cements used in implantology: FOZ (zinc oxide-based), DT (resin-based), and CIS (glass ionomer), after aging in air and artificial saliva, and after exposure to clinically relevant oral microbial strains. Surface morphology and elemental composition were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity was quantified by determining the number of colony-forming units (CFU∕mL) for Gram-positive b

Silicones are elastomers that have a wide variety of uses, including biomedical applications such as the coating of biomedical devices and as implants. Soft silicones with mechanical properties similar to those of biological tissues have particularly gained use as substrates for cell culture in mechanobiology studies. In this context, it would be desirable to be able to alter their surface mechanical properties with a relatively simple physical treatment. While deep ultraviolet (deep UV) or ultraviolet C (UV-C) treatment has been previously used as a surface treatment method for stiffer silico

For biohydrogen production, immobilized systems offer the potential for improved growth and productivity. In this study, microfiber-flocked surfaces were used as a novel strategy for Rhodobacter capsulatus biofilm-based photofermentative biohydrogen production. The surfaces were developed using electrostatic flocking by attaching polyamide microfibers to glass and poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) surfaces. Parameters such as fiber length, density, and adhesive type were optimized to develop shorter, denser, and vertically oriented microfiber structures. This optimized architecture increased the

Nanozymes are nanomaterials designed to mimic the catalytic functions of natural enzymes, offering advantages such as enhanced stability, tunability, and scalability. Although precise control over the spatial arrangement of catalytic centers is essential for maximizing nanozyme activity, it remains a fundamental challenge in nanozyme design. Here, we present a supramolecular strategy to achieve molecular-level engineering of catalytic centers by grafting hemin onto monodisperse cellulose oligomers (MCOs). The crystallization-driven self-assembly of MCOs directs the spatial organization of hemi

Small-diameter vascular grafts are indispensable in coronary and peripheral artery bypass surgeries to reestablish the blood flow when blood vessels block. Despite advances in biomaterials' design, current clinical practice still relies heavily on autologous vessels, as synthetic grafts for small-diameter applications present high failure rates due to thrombosis and neointimal hyperplasia. Hence, there is a need for antithrombogenic synthetic small-diameter vascular grafts. Antithrombogenicity can be ensured by passive strategies, which aim to minimize nonspecific protein adsorption and platel

Biofouling caused by mussel byssus adhesion to underwater surfaces poses significant ecological and economic challenges in freshwater ecosystems. However, effective management remains difficult due to limited understanding of how material properties influence byssus adhesion and the underlying mechanisms. In this study, we used the invasive golden mussel (Limnoperna fortunei) as a model fouling species to assess byssus adhesion on commonly used engineering materials, natural substrates, polymers, and marine antifouling materials. Adhesion tests revealed that golden mussels exhibited significan

Zirconium is used clinically as a material for hard-tissue repair because it has excellent corrosion resistance, low magnetic susceptibility, and low cytotoxicity. Bone-bonding ability is required to stably fix zirconium implants in bone, and anodization in a fluoride solution has been proposed as a method to achieve this. Because the corrosion reaction rate and surface crystalline phase change according to the fluoride concentration, it is assumed that the fluoride concentration in the electrolyte will affect bone bonding and mechanical properties. However, few studies have investigated this.

The Ca-containing amorphous metallic Mg layer (MC30) is an attractive surface coating for achieving bone reconstruction and infection prevention on Ti surfaces due to its functional changes from antibacterial to pro-osteogenic activities in vitro. In this study, surface changes of MC30 in a cell culture medium were thoroughly characterized in terms of ion release, surface morphology, crystal phase, and chemical state to elucidate the mechanism underlying its in vitro functional changes. The surface of MC30 initially possessed a thin passive layer composed of calcite and Mg2+ compounds before i
