The hyoid bone excursion is one of the most important gauges of larynx elevation in swallowing, contributing to airway protection and bolus passage into the esophagus. However, the implications of various parameters of hyoid bone excursion, such as the horizontal or vertical displacement and velocity, remain elusive and raise the need for a tool providing automatic kinematics analysis. Several conventional and deep learning-based models have been applied automatically to track the hyoid bone, but previous methods either require partial manual localization or do not transform the trajectory by

Recent advances in dysphagia treatment have given us many methods of stimulating swallowing function, but no attempt has been made to systematically classify them all. In this review, we provide an exhaustive description of all the techniques and stimulatory substances that stimulate swallowing that have so far been reported in the scientific literature, irrespective of their level of evidence, and we have tried to classify them with the objective of encouraging the future development of research in this direction. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis were fol

Tongue pressure plays a critical role in the oral and pharyngeal stages of swallowing, contributing considerably to bolus formation and manipulation as well as to safe transporting of food from the mouth to the stomach. Smooth swallowing relies not only on effective coordination of respiration and pharynx motions but also on sufficient tongue pressure. Conventional methods of measuring tongue pressure involve attaching a pressure sheet to the hard palate to monitor the force exerted by the tongue tip against the hard palate. In this study, an air bulb was inserted in the anterior oral cavity t

Dynamic Evaluation of Swallowing (DES) is an exam which provides invaluable information on the swallowing function. This review describes the requirements, protocols and processes for DES in regions of Brazil. Dysphagia is a swallowing abnormality, in one or more swallowing phases, with risk and/or occurrence of aspiration, damage regarding nutrition and/or hydration and possible need of nonoral feeding methods. DES is performed in an armored room, using fluoroscopy, with the patient in lateral and anteroposterior views, in an orthostatic position. Different consistencies and volumes are teste

BACKGROUND: Swallow tail sign (STS), which represents nigrosome-1 in the substantia nigra on 3 Tesla (T) susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI), has attracted attention as a promising magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) biomarker for idiopathic Parkinson's disease (iPD). Some reports have shown high sensitivity and specificity-both above 94%-for distinguishing iPD from healthy controls. However, abnormal STS has been observed in many neurodegenerative parkinsonisms and even in multiple sclerosis.
METHODS: All patients with parkinsonism who had 3 T MRI were included in a retrospective chart review

We recorded membrane potentialp changes in 45 pharyngeal motoneurons (PMs) including 33 expiratory modulated and 12 nonrespiratory neurons during breathing, swallowing, and coughing in decerebrate paralyzed cats. Four types of membrane potential changes were observed during swallowing: 1) depolarization during swallowing (n = 27), 2) depolarization preceded by a brief (≤ 0.1 s) hyperpolarization (n = 4), 3) longer term (> 0.3 s) hyperpolarization followed by depolarization (n = 11), and 4) hyperpolarization during the latter period of swallowing (n = 3). During coughing, PMs showed two types o

All mammals must suckle and swallow at birth, and subsequently chew and swallow solid foods, for optimal growth and health. These initially innate behaviors depend critically upon coordinated development of the mouth, tongue, pharynx, and larynx as well as the cranial nerves that control these structures. Disrupted suckling, feeding, and swallowing from birth onward-perinatal dysphagia-is often associated with several neurodevelopmental disorders that subsequently alter complex behaviors. Apparently, a broad range of neurodevelopmental pathologic mechanisms also target oropharyngeal and crania

The mechanisms responsible for aspiration are relatively unknown in patients recovering from acute respiratory failure (ARF) who required mechanical ventilation. Though many conditions may contribute to swallowing dysfunction, alterations in laryngeal structure and swallowing function likely play a role in the development of aspiration. At four university-based tertiary medical centers, we conducted a prospective cohort study of ARF patients who required intensive care and mechanical ventilation for at least 48 h. Within 72 h after extubation, a Fiberoptic Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swa
