Impaired sweating function in adult atopic dermatitis: results of the quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test.

BACKGROUND: Impaired sweating is thought to be a cause of barrier dysfunction in atopic dermatitis (AD). OBJECTIVES: To examine the sweating function in AD in a quantitative manner. METHODS: We investigated the sweating response of lesional and non-lesional skin of adult patients with AD by a quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test in which the axon reflex is stimulated by acetylcholine iontophoresis. Sweat volume on the volar aspect of the forearm was measured in 18 adult patients with AD and in 40 non-atopic controls; five patients with Sjögren's syndrome were also studied as disease compa…

Sweating and vascular responses in the face: normal regulation and dysfunction in migraine, cluster headache and harlequin syndrome.

At least four neural mechanisms influence facial blood flow. Firstly, sympathetic vasoconstrictor fibres exert a tonic constrictor influence … articipate in local inflammatory responses. The sympathetic nervous system normally controls facial sweating. However, after injury to postganglionic sympathetic fibres, parasympathetic fibres sometimes make functional connections with sweat glands, so that parasympathetic reflexes provoke pathological sweating. In this review, new information about the …

Amiloride impairs the cholinergic regulation of potassium permeability in the human sweat gland but not in the rat submandibular gland.

Potassium permeability was monitored in human sweat glands and rat submandibular glands. Acetylcholine increased permeability in both tissues and the responses consisted of transient, calcium-independent and sustained, calcium-dependent components. Amiloride, a drug which inhibits Na(+)-H+ countertransport, impaired the regulation of potassium permeability in sweat glands but not in the submandibular gland. It is suggested that the stimulus-permeability coupling process in the sweat gland may be sensitive to the lowering of internal pH.

Effects of body heating and mental arithmetic on facial sweating and blood flow in unilateral migraine headache.

Facial sweating and pulse amplitude during body heating were investigated during the headache-free period in 38 subjects who suffered from unilateral migraine headache that usually recurred on the same side. In 22 of these subjects, pulse amplitude recorded from the forehead circulation was examined during a computerized mental arithmetic test. Thermally-induced increases in forehead pulse amplitude were smaller on the side habitually affected by headache than on the other side of the forehead. Although sweating from the upper part of the forehead did not differ consistently between the two si…

Cluster headache: forehead sweating pattern during heating and pilocarpine tests. Variation as a function of time.

Thirty-one patients with cluster headache were examined with regard to their forehead sweating pattern, by means of the Evaporimeter. Sweating was stimulated in two different ways: by body heating and by parenterally administered pilocarpine. The resulting increase in evaporation was frequently measured at different positions on both sides of the forehead, and the possibility of variations in the pattern related to the passage of time was specifically scrutinized. Some typical patterns emerged. The previously reported, marked asymmetries of response (deficient heat-induced sweating and pilocar…

Multimodal analytical strategy for revealing the related compounds of color variation in Salvia miltiorrhiza after sweating.

This study investigated the color-related compounds of Salvia miltiorrhiza after sweating. Stereomicroscopy and Electronic eye system were employed to characterize color variation. UPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS and HPLC identified differential compounds. Furthermore, μ-FTIR and MALDI-MSI visualized the spatial distribution of compounds, and the compounds distribution was confirmed via HPLC. Result showed that after sweating, the appearance characteristics of Salvia miltiorrhiza changed significantly, exhibiting a reddish-brown epidermis and purple-brown inner tissue. Among 49 significantly altered compou…

A Rare Incidence of Sweating Sickness-Like Symptoms in a Crossbred Holstein Friesian Cow in Chattogram, Bangladesh.

In this report, an incidence of sweating sickness-like symptoms in a crossbred Holstein Friesian cow was diagnosed. The cow was suffering from vaporization of the skin, dehydration, wet hair coat, and matting of hair due to excessive sweating. There were several ticks, flies, and mosquitoes in tail switch and other parts of the body. Blood and urine parameters were tested. We treated the patient successfully with ivermectin as ectoparasite control, ceftiofur sodium antibiotic to treat bacterial infections, ketoprofen as analgesics and antipyretics, chlorpheniramine maleate as H2-blocker, and t…

Real sweating in a virtual stress environment: Investigation of the stress reactivity in people with primary focal hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating, OMIM %114110) is a complex disorder with multifactorial causes. Emotional strains and social stress increase symptoms and lead to a vicious circle. Previously, we showed significantly higher depression scores, and normal cortisol awakening responses in patients with primary focal hyperhidrosis (PFH). Stress reactivity in response to a (virtual) Trier Social Stress Test (TSST-VR) has not been studied so far. Therefore, we measured sweat secretion, salivary cortisol and alpha amylase (sAA) concentrations, and subjective stress ratings in affected an…

Development of algorithm for diagnosis of cystic fibrosis in absence of sweat chloride testing in resource-limited setting.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a diagnostic algorithm for cystic fibrosis (CF) in the setting of unavailability of sweat chloride, based on clinical features and basic laboratory investigations. METHODS: In a prospective observational study, we enrolled children with recurrent/persistent pneumonia with either malabsorption or poor growth, undergoing a sweat chloride test, between January 2019 and December 2020. They were simultaneously evaluated for aquagenic wrinkling of hands, stool fat globules, sputum for bacterial culture, blood gas, and serum electrolytes. Sensitivity and specificity were calcul…

Fevers, Sweats, Weight Loss, Oh My! When IgG4 Related Disease Comes Knocking. . .

Immunoglobulin G4-related systemic disease (IgG4-RSD) is a fibro-inflammatory immune condition characterized by IgG4 positive plasma cells, fibrosis, and frequently elevated serum IgG4 level. Akin to sarcoidosis, IgG4-RSD is a systemic disease with diverse organ manifestations linked by common histopathologic features. IgG4-RSD typically presents sub acutely without significant constitutional symptoms or fever. Hepatic Inflammatory pseudotumor (HIP) is a rare manifestation of IgG4-RSD composed of dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate and extensive fibrosis. We present an older Asian male who pres

Three new cases of Crisponi /cold induced sweating syndrome (CS/CISS1) in Turkish families.

Crisponi syndrome/Cold Induced Sweating Syndrome 1 (CS/CISS1) is a rare, autosomal recessive, multisystemic disease. Hyperthermia attacks, abnormal contractions in the muscles of the face and oropharynx, respiratory distress, camptodactyly, and swallowing difficulty are the main features of the condition in the neonatal period. Patients experience cold-induced sweating attacks and progressive kyphoscoliosis in childhood and adolescence. Mutations in the cytokine receptor like factor 1 (CRLF1) gene causes the CISS1 (Cold- induced sweating syndrome type 1) disease (over 95% of patients). CRLF1 i…
