Cardiac afferents and neurohormonal activation in congestive heart failure.

Cardiac chambers have afferent connections to the brainstem and to the spinal cord. Vagal afferents mediate depressor responses and become activated by volume expansion, increased myocardial contractility and atrial natriuretic factor. Sympathetic afferents, on the contrary, are activated by metabolic mediators, myocardial ischemia and cardiac enlargement. These opposite behaviors may lead to activation or suppression of the sympathetic nervous system and of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. As cardiac diseases progress, the heart dilates, plasma norepinephrine increases, atrial natriu…

The evocation of rumination in sheep by the close-arterial injection of catecholamines, cholinergic drugs, autacoids and gastrointestinal hormones into the forestomach.

The effect of alpha-2 adrenoreceptor agonists, cholinergic drugs, autacoids and some gastrointestinal hormones upon the evocation of rumination in sheep when injected by close-arterial injection into the forestomach was examined. Apart from adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine and xylazine only one alpha-2 agonist (BHT933) evoked rumination effectively. Acetylcholine, neostigmine, the gastrointestinal hormones and the autacoids examined did not evoke rumination consistently. Tyramine did not usually evoke rumination and guanethidine injected before adrenaline did not prevent the latter from evo

The morphology of the cervico-thoracic sympathetic system in donkeys (Equus asinus L.).

Five adult donkeys of both sexes, used in applied anatomy classes, and perfused with formalin for teaching purposes, constituted the study material. Ganglion cervicale caudale of the examined materials has observed to exhibit individually variable situation as to extend on the left side of the median line, at the alignment of the first and second intercostal spaces and on the right side between the level of the first and third costa. The ganglion extended more caudally on the right side of median line. The lateral surface of the ganglion was determined to be covered with the m. scalenus medius

Autonomic cardiovascular responses to hypercapnia in conscious rats: the roles of the chemo- and baroreceptors.

The role of the autonomic nervous system, the central and peripheral chemoreceptors, and the arterial baroreceptors was examined in the card … ct rats. These results suggest that hypercapnia induces an increase in MABP due to an activation of sympathetic nervous system via central chemoreceptors and a decrease in HR due to a secondary reflex activation of the parasympathetic nervous system via arterial baroreceptors in response to the rise in ABP. In addition, carotid chemoreceptors do not play a major role in the …

Anticholinergics induce eclamptic seizures.

Severe preeclampsia is a pathophysiological disorder specific to pregnancy and characterized by vasoconstriction and hypercoagulability. Ecl … colon is often demonstrated in these patients. These phenomena result from the hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system but are not caused by the hyperactivity of the parasympathetic nervous system. The authors experienced two cases of eclamptic seizures after the administration of an anticholinergic (scopolamine butylbromide) in patients with severe preeclampsia com …

Involvement of the autonomic nervous system in the pathophysiology of Rett syndrome.

Clinical observations and physiological evidence suggest involvement of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in Rett syndrome (RS). We studied … neurons is suggested, but reduced secretion of melatonin was proposed and possible influence of the sympathetic nervous system for it was discussed. Long lasting abnormalities of SWR as well as leakage of axial atonia into NREM stage are due to an early involvement of noradrenergic neurons. The latter implied the loss of integration of the central ANS. Based on these observ …

Sympathetic dysfunction of systemic right ventricle in congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries.

We evaluate the systemic right ventricle (SRV) failure of congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries using the scintigraphic studies in a case with 32-year-old male who improved the heart failure by the use of beta-adrenergic blockers. The myocardial perfusion sympathetic nervous system activity mismatch with preserved coronary flow and wall thickness indicates a distinctive feature as SRV cardiomyopathy, suggesting the importance of recovery of SRV sympathetic dysfunction for improving the prognosis.

Withdrawal of endogenous sympathetic drive lowers blood pressure in primary aldosteronism.

We were able to observe the effect of withdrawal of endogenous sympathetic drive in a hypertensive patient with an aldosterone-secreting adrenal adenoma. Acute stimulation of both carotid sinus nerves lowered blood pressure to normotensive or hypotensive levels by reducing peripheral resistance. When chronic carotid sinus nerve stimulation was discontinued, peripheral resistance and blood pressure increased. These data suggest that the sympathetic nervous system is important in the maintenance of hypertension in established primary aldosteronism.

[Research progress of nucleus tractus solitarius involved in central regulation of hypertension].

The nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) is the primary brain region for receiving and integrating cardiovascular afferent signals. It plays a crucial role in maintaining balance of autonomic nervous system and regulating blood pressure through cardiovascular reflexes. Neurons within the NTS form complex synaptic connections and interact reciprocally with other brain regions. The NTS regulates autonomic nervous system activity and arterial blood pressure through modulating baroreflex, sympathetic nerve activity, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and oxidative stress. Dysfunctions in NTS activi

Neuroimmune interaction in inflammatory diseases.

The inflammatory response is modulated through interactions among the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. Intercommunication between immune cells and the autonomic nervous system is a growing area of interest. Spatial and temporal information about inflammatory processes is relayed to the central nervous system (CNS) where neuroimmune modulation serves to control the extent and intensity of the inflammation. Over the past few decades, research has revealed various routes by which the nervous system and the immune system communicate. The CNS regulates the immune system via hormonal and neur

Macro- and Microanatomy of the Sympathetic Innervation of the Spleen in Rodents.

In recent years, several studies have demonstrated the crucial role played by the sympathetic spleen innervation in regulating immune cell function involving fighting pathogens or tissue injury. These findings have sparked interest across different research fields with a common goal of understanding and manipulating splenic sympathetic activity to modulate immune function and inflammation. However, the anatomical identification of spleen-projecting neurons in rodents presents a considerable challenge, given the multi-compartmentalized location of their cellular components. This article address

Stimulation of extrinsic sympathetic nerves differentially affects neurogenic motor activity in guinea pig distal colon.

The speed of pellet propulsion through the isolated guinea pig distal colon in vitro significantly exceeds in vivo measurements, suggesting a role for inhibitory mechanisms from sources outside the gut. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of sympathetic nerve stimulation on three different neurogenic motor behaviors of the distal colon: transient neural events (TNEs), colonic motor complexes (CMCs), and pellet propulsion. To do this, segments of guinea pig distal colon with intact connections to the inferior mesenteric ganglion (IMG) were set up in organ baths allowing for sim

Pharmacologic treatment of complex regional pain syndrome I: a conceptual framework.

Pain may be a leading symptom in complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS I) and may hinder functional recovery. In this case, a pharmacotherapeutic approach to pain should be part of the individually tailored interdisciplinary treatment regimen. However, operational criteria for determining which patient may profit from what therapeutic intervention are lacking. This article discusses a conceptual framework in which the rapid progress made in basic pain research may contribute to the clinical management of pain in CRPS I. First, recent insights in the pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying

Sudeck's atrophy: a review of the literature.

Sudeck's atrophy, initiated by local irritation, proceeds from a mild form of neurovascular and osseous changes to a stage of increasing or intractable pain and trophic changes. Differential diagnosis is important as a number of conditions may produce a similar clinical picture. At any stage, the disease may improve spontaneously or from therapy, or it may result in varying degrees of permanent disability.

Study of sympathetic skin response in patients with COVID-19 infection.

OBJECTIVES: Many articles hypothesized the potential role of autonomic nervous system in the pathogenesis and outcome of COVID-19 infection. Several studies reported both central and peripheral nervous system involvement in COVID-19 as well. Up to our knowledge, there is no study evaluating whether this virus could invade the autonomic nervous system affecting its function adversely. Sympathetic skin response (SSR) has long been used as a method of evaluating the autonomic nervous system. Regarding the importance of the autonomic nervous system in hemostasis and wide consequences of COVID-19 i
