Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast with Merkel cell carcinoma-like features.

A case of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the breast with Merkel cell carcinoma-like features occurring in a 38-year-old female is described. A … istochemically, many tumor cells showed positive reaction for CAM5.2, vimentin, chromogranin A, and synaptophysin. The tumor was also positive for neuron-specific enolase (NSE), Leu-7, calcitonin, S-100 protein, and glial fibrillary acidic protein. Flow cytometric analysis showed that the tumor was DNA diploid. An axillary lymph node was positive for metastasis …

Developmental pattern of cell type-specific calretinin immunoreactivity in the postnatal gerbil pineal gland.

The postnatal development of immunoreactivity for the neuronal calcium-binding protein calretinin in the pineal gland of the Mongolian gerbil was investigated using immunostaining of serial semithin sections. Calretinin-positive pineal cells could readily be visualized from the day of birth (P0) onwards and coexpressed the intermediate filament (IF) protein vimentin. During the first half of the first postnatal week, many of the calretinin-/vimentin-positive cells were also immunopositive for synaptophysin and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and thus corresponded to pinealocytes. However, the ex…

Two synchronous solid and cystic tumors of the pancreas.

We report a 17-year-old woman who had two synchronous solid and cystic tumors of the pancreas (SCTP) detected by abdominal echography and co … mor cells were immunohistochemically positive for alpha-1 antitrypsin, neuron-specific enolase, and synaptophysin. The final diagnosis was SCTP arising synchronously and independently at two sites. As far as we know, only one case of multicentric SCTP has been reported previously. Local recurrence of SCTP suggests the possibility of multicentric occurrence, and …

Olfactory neuroblastoma: detection of genomic imbalances by comparative genomic hybridization.

Olfactory neuroblastoma (esthesioneuroblastoma) is a very rare tumour of the olfactory mucosa. Morphological features and cytogenetic studie … s were the basis for the diagnosis of esthesionearoblastoma. Immunohistochemical reactions for NSE, synaptophysin, chromogranin A, HNK-1/Leu-7 and S-100 revealed a characteristic immunophenotype. The CGH analysis showed multiple changes including DNA overrepresentations of chromosomes 4, 8, 11 and 14, partial DNA gains of the long arms of chromosomes 1 and 17, …

Cauda equina tumor with ependymal and paraganglionic differentiation.

We describe the case of a 31-year-old woman who was first treated for a pigmented choroid plexus papilloma of the fourth ventricle. Ten year later, she developed a new tumor in the region of the cauda equina. This second neoplasm contained areas of papillary ependymoma that displayed phosphotungstic acid hematoxylin-positive glial fibers and immunoreactivity for glial fibrillary acidic and S-100 proteins. Areas of ependymoma merged with others that displayed the appearance of a paraganglioma, including lobules and nests of chief cells immunoreactive for neuron-specific enolase, synaptophysin, …

Synaptic loss in Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.

The extent and location of neuronal losses necessary or sufficient to produce dementia in patients with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is unknown. To approach this question, we studied synaptic terminals in postmortem brain tissue utilizing immunohistochemical techniques. We used antibodies against two proteins found in synaptic terminals--synapsin I and synaptophysin--as synaptic markers in the hippocampal complexes of eight patients with autopsy-proven AD and eight nondemented control subjects. Quantitative microscopy measured the regional density of synaptic staining. All AD patients showed a str…

Distinct regional patterns of synaptic vulnerability across hippocampal and parahippocampal subregions in Alzheimer's disease.

Synaptic loss in the (para)hippocampus is a major contributor to cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet its regional specificity and pathological correlates remain poorly understood. Here, we quantified synaptophysin-positive puncta across hippocampal subregions (CA4, CA2, CA1, and subiculum) and parahippocampal cortex (entorhinal cortex, parahippocampal and fusiform gyrus) in postmortem tissue from 28 AD and 17 controls, and assessed relationships to neuropathological severity and cognitive decline. Amyloid-β, phosphorylated tau (p-tau) load and neurofilament light (NfL) immunorea…

Distribution and morphology of sensory and autonomic fibres in the subendocardial plexus of the rat heart.

Cardiac reflexes originating from sensory receptors in the heart ensure blood supply to vital tissues and organs in the face of constantly c … at the cavo-atrial region. In order to elucidate the nature of these fibres, double labelling with synaptophysin (SYN) and either NFH, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) or tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) was performed. The findings show that subendocardial nerve nets are denser at the superior cavo-atrial junction than the mid- …

A new cause of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: non-small cell lung cancer.

Numerous epidemiologic studies suggest a relationship between lung cancer and peptic ulcer disease. Furthermore, various lung cancers synthesize and release a number of peptides such as gastrin and gastrin-releasing peptide that could cause acid hypersecretion; however, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES), because of a lung tumor, has never been described. We report such a patient for the first time. A 60-year-old man with a non-small cell lung carcinoma (large cell type) presented with diarrhea, heartburn, abdominal pain, and duodenal ulcers. Evaluation showed ZES was present (fasting hypergastr

Hypothalamic hamartoma: report of a case with unusual histologic features.

A rare case of hypothalamic hamartoma with unusual radiologic and histopathological features is described, possibly the first of its type in English literature. A 1.5-year-old female child presented with precocious puberty. MR scan of the brain revealed a pedunculated hypothalamic mass, most of which was isointense with normal brain on T1- and T2-weighted images. However, a sizeable component of the lesion was hyperintense on T1-weighted images, suggestive of adipose tissue. Microscopically, the lesion was a hamartoma composed of an admixture of neuroectodermal elements, namely glial cells, ne

Differential distribution of the HNK-1 carbohydrate epitope in the vertebrate retina.

The expression of the cell adhesion-related HNK-1 carbohydrate epitope in the retina and ciliary body was studied in different vertebrates and in man. A series of eyes from 4 fish, 5 bird, and 9 mammalian species was analyzed by immunohistochemistry with monoclonal antibodies (MAb) HNK-1 and VC1.1 to the HNK-1 epitope, and with MAb SY38 to synaptophysin. Additionally, 7 morphologically normal human eyes were studied. In all fishes, as well as in baboons and man, the radial glia and all retinal layers except the photoreceptor cell layer were immunoreactive for the HNK-1 epitope. In all birds, t…
