SMARTphone-based, early cardiac REHABilitation in patients with acute coronary syndromes [SMART-REHAB Trial]: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: There are well-documented treatment gaps in secondary prevention of coronary heart disease and no clear guidelines to assist early physical activity after acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Smartphone technology may provide an innovative platform to close these gaps. This paper describes the study design of a randomized controlled trial assessing whether a smartphone-based secondary prevention program can facilitate early physical activity and improve cardiovascular health in patients with ACS. METHODS: We have developed a multi-faceted, patient-centred smartphone-based secondary pre

Variation in fatigue may be poorly explained by pain: results from a longitudinal, exploratory study.

It is frequently claimed that fatigue reflects pain and that strategies for alleviating fatigue in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) should focus on pain management. The aim of this study was twofold: to investigate the correlation between fatigue and pain over time and to investigate the temporal relationship between fatigue and pain in patients with AS. Fatigue and pain were assessed twice a week for 35 weeks in 23 patients with AS. Data were reported with text messages on mobile phones, constituting around 70 repeated measurements per patient. To estimate correlation over time, the

Active recall to increase HIV and STI testing: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Active recall can improve reattendance rates and could increase retesting rates and detection of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), but the best strategy remains uncertain. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of active recall for HIV and/or STI testing. We searched six electronic databases using terms for HIV, STIs, tests and active recall (defined as a reminder to retest for HIV/STIs) for randomised, non-randomised and observational English-language studies published between 1983 and 2013. Outcomes included reattendance/retesting rate and STI

A randomized controlled trial to assess adherence to allergic rhinitis treatment following a daily short message service (SMS) via the mobile phone.

BACKGROUND: Short message service (SMS) has been suggested as an effective method to improve adherence to medical therapy in some chronic diseases. However, data on the effects of SMS interventions to allergic rhinitis (AR) treatment is limited at present. We aimed to assess whether a daily SMS reminder could improve AR patients' adherence to medication and treatment outcomes. METHODS: Fifty outpatients with AR were randomized to either receive (SMS group) or not (control group) a daily SMS reminder on their cell phone to take intranasal corticosteroid treatment for 30 days. The primary study

Personalised electronic messages to improve sun protection in young adults.

We studied the acceptability and feasibility of delivering sun protection messages via electronic media such as short message services (SMS) to people aged 18-40 years. An online survey was conducted using a pre-established panel of volunteers. We compared the characteristics of those who indicated that they would like to be alerted to the UV index, with those who would not, using bivariate logistic regression. Characteristics found to be associated with a desire to receive such advice were entered into a multivariate logistic regression analysis. The median age of the 141 participants was 34

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis-Related Messages Across Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (Rebranded X): Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Interventions are needed to address the lack of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) awareness and mitigate barriers related to PrEP use. One such intervention modality is social media, as PrEP awareness and communication on issues, such as access and cost, are easily addressed via clear social media messages on platforms for PrEP-eligible people, and especially young people, who use social media more frequently. OBJECTIVE: This descriptive study seeks to extend understanding of PrEP awareness and usage by examining PrEP-related communication across 3 popular social media platforms (Fa

Coverage of Skin Cancer Risk Factors and UV Behaviors in Popular U.S. Magazines from 2000 to 2012.

Mass media is an influential source of skin cancer and tanning information for the public, but we know little about its content or emphasis. The objective of this research was to describe the volume and nature of skin cancer and tanning messages in 20 popular U.S. men's and women's magazines (2000-2012). We used a directed content analysis to determine frequency information about risk factors and ultraviolet (UV) behaviors in 608 articles and 930 images. Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests determined coverage differences based on content type (text vs. image) and target audience (women vs. men

Unsubscribe, pleeezz!!!: management and training of media competence in computer-mediated communication.

Computer-mediated communication (CMC) has created a new communication divide. Mostly, this division is due to technical and access problems. Overlooked is yet another divide in terms of user communication competence. This contribution focuses on media competence based on theories about communication competence and theories about CMC. Two field studies are presented: an analysis of a virtual seminar chat communication (22 participants, 3 weeks' duration) and an analysis of unsubscribe-failures within 2 years of a German mailing list (average of 1,000 subscriptions). Data from both studies revea

Texting-Based Reporting of Adverse Drug Reactions to Ensure Patient Safety: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Paper-based adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting has been in practice for more than 6 decades. Health professionals remain the primary source of reports, while the value of patients' reporting is yet unclear. With the increasing popularity of using electronic gadgets in health, it is expected that the electronic transmission of reports will become the norm within a few years. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study are to investigate whether short messaging service or texting can provide an alternative or supplemental method for ADR reporting given the increasing role of mobile phones

Impact of Mobile Apps in Conjunction With Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy on Patients' Complications, Quality of Life, and Health-Related Self-Care Behaviors: Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is commonly chosen for long-term enteral nutrition support. However, common complications of PEG include wound infection, leakage, obstruction, bleeding, dislodgement, pneumonia, peritonitis, and more. The anticipation of these complications by both patients and their family caregivers underscores the essential requirement of ongoing technical guidance for the daily care of PEG and the adoption of preventative strategies. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to establish and compare a health education program utilizing a tracking system for PEG usi

Interventions to reduce tobacco use in people experiencing homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Populations experiencing homelessness have high rates of tobacco use and experience substantial barriers to cessation. Tobacco-caused conditions are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among people experiencing homelessness, highlighting an urgent need for interventions to reduce the burden of tobacco use in this population. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether interventions designed to improve access to tobacco cessation interventions for adults experiencing homelessness lead to increased numbers engaging in or receiving treatment, and whether interventions designed to h

A BRIEF ECOLOGICAL MOMENTARY INTERVENTION FOR GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER: A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL OF THE WORRY OUTCOME JOURNAL.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of many cognitive behavioral component interventions has not been examined, with worry outcome monitoring among them. METHODS: To address this issue, 51 participants with clinical levels of generalized anxiety disorder were randomly assigned to a treatment or control condition for 10 days. The treatment condition consisted of a brief ecological momentary intervention termed the Worry Outcome Journal (WOJ). WOJ participants recorded worries and tracked their outcomes, rating worry distress, interference, and expected outcome probabilities. Thought log (TL) control part

China's cigarette health warning labels: Undermined by branding.

INTRODUCTION: In China, health warning labels (HWLs) on cigarette packs are text-only with two messages in rotation. We examined China's HWLs as they appear on packs, focusing on elements of design and branding that may undermine their effectiveness. METHODS: We used a systematic protocol to purchase 488 unique cigarette packs in 2023 from five major Chinese cities. The study sample consisted of the 471 packs that displayed the current HWLs mandated by China. A detailed codebook was developed to assess design elements in the HWL area (color/pattern schemes, text to background contrast, brandi

WHISPER or SHOUT study: protocol of a cluster-randomised controlled trial assessing mHealth sexual reproductive health and nutrition interventions among female sex workers in Mombasa, Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: New interventions are required to reduce unintended pregnancies among female sex workers (FSWs) in low- and middle-income countries and to improve their nutritional health. Given sex workers' high mobile phone usage, repeated exposure to short messaging service (SMS) messages could address individual and interpersonal barriers to contraceptive uptake and better nutrition. METHODS: In this two-arm cluster randomised trial, each arm constitutes an equal-attention control group for the other. SMS messages were developed systematically, participatory and theory-driven and cover eith

Team-based home blood pressure monitoring for blood pressure equity a protocol for a stepped wedge cluster randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Home Blood Pressure Monitoring (HBPM) that includes a team with a clinical pharmacist is an evidence-based intervention that improves blood pressure (BP). Yet, strategies for promoting its adoption in primary care are lacking. We developed potentially feasible and sustainable implementation strategies to improve hypertension control and BP equity. METHODS: We assessed barriers and facilitators to HBPM and iteratively adapted implementation strategies through key informative interviews and guidance from a multistakeholder stakeholder team involving investigators, clinicians, and pr

Fatal Second Impact Syndrome in Rowan Stringer, A 17-Year-Old Rugby Player.

Second impact syndrome (SIS) is associated with malignant brain swelling and usually occurs in young athletes with one or more prior, recent concussions. SIS is rare and some dispute its existence. We report a case of SIS in Rowan Stringer, age 17, a rugby player who sustained a fatal brain injury despite prompt medical therapy including decompression surgery. The cause of the massive brain swelling was initially unknown. An inquest revealed Rowan's text messages to friends describing symptoms from two prior, recent rugby brain injuries, likely concussions, within 5 days of the fatal blow and
