A portable system for monitoring physiological responses to hypoglycaemia.

Hypoglycaemia is the most common complication affecting people with Type 1 insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Its onset is characterized by symptoms which include sweating, tremor, palpitations, loss of concentration and tiredness. As part of a research project to investigate the mechanisms of hypoglycaemia we have developed an ambulatory system to monitor and record pulsatile changes in blood flow, pulse interval, body temperature and skin impedance. The system uses a pocket computer (Atari Portfolio) to collect and store the data on a memory card. The analogue system consists of two thermo

Rate process model for arterial tissue thermal damage: implications on vessel photocoagulation.

A numerical model for thermal damage to human arterial tissue is presented, based on protein denaturation kinetics. The model involves determination of coefficients of rate processes A & delta E, which are tissue type-dependent (arterial tissue in this study), and definition of threshold damage. A feedback-controlled constant surface temperature device was used to induce 80 coagulative lesions of arterial human tissue ranging in temperature from 66 degrees C to 76 degrees C and in duration from 15 to 1,500 seconds. The measured coefficients were determined to be A = 5.6 x 10(63) s-1 and delta

Filament deposition modeling quality assurance testing for the medical physicist.

BACKGROUND: Filament deposition modeling (FDM) can be a practical method for producing quality control (QC) imaging resources for the clinic. However, frequent printing may degrade print quality over time. PURPOSE: To develop a process to ensure prints for the diagnostic physicist are accurate and reproducible. METHODS: Four FDM systems were evaluated by printing a custom, novel QC model on each printer 12 times over a period of 12 months. Several tests were performed, including print resolvability (lp/cm), XYZ dimension accuracy (mm), density (g/cm3), line width (mm), XY position accuracy (

Forced migration and human trafficking: survivors' narratives of strength and survival upon first arrival in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Human trafficking poses a major public health challenge to the international community, with significant health and social consequences for those affected. Forced migrants are particularly vulnerable to becoming victims of human trafficking due to language barriers and migration-related hardships. These include social and economic deprivation. To better understand the lived experiences within this already vulnerable group, it is essential to examine individual cases in relation to risk factors, experiences of exploitation and exit, and resilience. METHODS: Using a qualitative appr

Remote Vital Monitoring During Home Blood Transfusions in Japan Using Attendant-Performed Vitals: A Pilot Feasibility and Safety Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Home blood transfusion is thought to be a promising solution for reducing the burden of hospital visits for elderly patients with hematologic diseases such as myelodysplastic syndrome and leukemia. However, safety concerns and reliance on nonprofessional attendants currently limit its widespread adoption in Japan. We evaluated feasibility (completion of scheduled measurement points per transfusion day) and operational safety (frequency of alerts and proportion leading to clinical actions) of intermittent vital sign monitoring with real-time remote alerts during home blood

Psychological Distress, Caregiver Burden and Quality of Life Among Informal Carers of First Nations Australians Diagnosed With Cancer: A Cross-Sectional Study.

IntroductionInformal carers provide essential support for people diagnosed with cancer, however, the demands of caregiving can negatively impact their psychological wellbeing. There is a need to examine psychological wellbeing among carers of First Nations cancer patients to understand the impacts of caregiving within cultural contexts. Therefore, this study aims to quantify carer psychological distress, burden, and quality of life (QoL) among carers of First Nations Australian cancer patients - key indicators of carer wellbeing that may have implications for both carers and patients.MethodsTh
