En-Face Optical Coherence Tomography of Acute Syphilitic Posterior Placoid Chorioretinopathy.

PURPOSE: To report a unique case series of acute syphilitic posterior placoid chorioretinopathy (ASPPC) correlating en-face optical coherence tomography (OCT) with standard imaging modalities. METHODS: In this retrospective case series, multimodal imaging was performed in three ASPPC patients at the time of disease presentation. RESULTS: Clinical and laboratory findings were consistent with the diagnosis of ASPPC. In all the study patients, multiple hyperreflective dot-like lesions distributed in the macular area and observed with en-face OCT at the level of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)

Clinical applications of spectral domain optical coherence tomography in retinal diseases.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was introduced about two decades ago and has revolutionized ophthalmic practice in recent years. It is a noninvasive noncontact imaging modality that provides a high-resolution cross-sectional image of the cornea, retina, choroid and optic nerve head, analogous to that of the histological section. Advances in OCT technology in signal detection technique from time-domain (TD) to spectral-domain (SD) detection have given us the potential to study various retinal layers more precisely and in less time. SD-OCT better delineates structural changes and fine lesions

Diagnostic value of computed tomography colonography (CTC) after incomplete optical colonoscopy.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the role of computed tomography colonography (CTC) in patients who previously underwent incomplete optical colonoscopy (OC). We analyzed the impact of colonic lesions in intestinal segments not studied by OC and extracolonic findings in these patients. METHODS: Between January 2014 and May 2015, 61 patients with a history of abdominal pain and incomplete OC examination were studied by CTC. CTCs were performed by 320-row CT scan in both the supine and the prone position, without intravenous administration of contrast medium. In all patients both colonic findi

Prostate cancer diagnosis: the feasibility of needle-based optical coherence tomography.

The objective of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility of needle-based optical coherence tomography (OCT) and functional analysis of OCT data along the full pullback trajectory of the OCT measurement in the prostate, correlated with pathology. OCT images were recorded using a commercially available C7-XR™ OCT Intravascular Imaging System interfaced to a C7 Dragonfly™ intravascular 0.9-mm-diameter imaging probe. A computer program was constructed for automated image attenuation analysis. First, calibration of the OCT system for both the point spread function and the system roll-off was a

Validation of human small airway measurements using endobronchial optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND: Small airway remodeling is the cardinal feature underlying chronic airway diseases. There is no modality which identifies small airway pathological changes, which is crucial for early diagnosis, efficacy and prognostic assessment. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the usefulness of endobronchial optical coherence tomography (EB-OCT) in assessing small airways morphology in vivo. METHODS: Twelve patients with pulmonary nodules scheduled for lung resection underwent spirometry, multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) and EB-OCT. We measured D(mean) (mean luminal diameter), Ai (inner luminal

In vivo tissue injury mapping using optical coherence tomography based methods.

An injury causes changes in the optical attenuation coefficient (OAC) of a light beam traveling inside a tissue. We report a method called tissue injury mapping (TIM), which utilizes a noninvasive in vivo optical coherence tomography approach to generate an OAC and microvascular map of the injured tissue. Using TIM, the infarct region development in a mouse cerebral cortex during a stroke is visualized. Moreover, we demonstrate the changes in human facial skin structure and microvasculature during an acne lesion development from initiation to scarring. The results indicate that TIM may be used

Bulbar Conjunctival and Tenon's Layer Thickness Measurement using Optical Coherence Tomography.

PURPOSE: Observations made during glaucoma filtering surgery (trabeculectomy) suggest variability in the thickness of the bulbar conjunctiva and Tenon's layers between individuals. We propose that this could infuence the final bleb morphology and function. We designed a pilot study to assess this using optical coherence tomography (OCT) to measure bulbar conjunctival and Tenon's layer thickness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 67 eyes of 48 individuals were scanned using an optovue Mode RT100 version 2.0 OCT machine. Cross-line CAM-L scans were taken and the com bined bulbar conjunctival an

Characterization of transparent dentin in attrited teeth using optical coherence tomography.

Attrition and wear of tooth surface occur with aging and result in loss of enamel, with exposure and histological changes in dentin. Dealing with attrited teeth and restoration of the lost tissue are clinically challenging. The main objective of this study is to characterize the exposed transparent dentin in the occlusal surface of attrited teeth by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Naturally attrited, extracted human teeth with occlusal-transparent dentin were investigated in comparison to sound and carious teeth. The teeth were subjected to OCT imaging and then cross-sectioned and polished

Spectral domain optical coherence tomography imaging of punctate outer retinal toxoplasmosis.

Punctate outer retinal toxoplasmosis is a recognized phenotype of this common ocular parasite. We present a case presenting with poor visual acuity, but with prompt treatment regaining excellent vision by the final time point. Imaging demonstrates progression of an active lesion adjacent to an inactive retinal scar with color photography, fluorescein angiography, and Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT). SD-OCT imaging of the chorioretinal scar demonstrated alternating hypertrophy and atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium along with a discrete break in Bruch's membrane. At

Disparity between visual fields and optical coherence tomography in hydroxychloroquine retinopathy.

PURPOSE: American Academy of Ophthalmology recommendations for screening for hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) retinopathy advise objective measures, such as spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) along with visual fields. However, the relative sensitivity and specificity of screening tests have not been fully resolved. We characterize a subset of patients with toxicity who show unusual disparity between fields and SD-OCT and thus have implications for screening practice. DESIGN: Review of charts and clinical data. PARTICIPANTS: Patients at St

Automatic atherosclerotic heart disease detection in intracoronary optical coherence tomography images.

Intracoronary optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new invasive imaging system which produces high-resolution images of coronary arteries. Preliminary data suggests that the atherosclerotic disease can be detected from the intracoronary OCT images. However, manual assessment of the intracoronary OCT images is time-consuming and subjective. In this work, we present an automatic atherosclerotic disease detection system on intracoronary OCT images. In the system, a preprocessing scheme is first applied to remove speckle noise and artifacts caused by catheter. Intensity, Histograms of Oriented

Anterior segment optical coherence tomography for imaging the sub-Tenon space.

In this study, we report the ability of anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS OCT) in imaging the sub-Tenon space and its clinical application. High-speed AS OCT (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, Calif., USA) was used to visualize the sub-Tenon space during sub-Tenon injection. The sub-Tenon spaces, Tenon thickness, conjunctiva-Tenon thickness, injecting cannula position in relation to the sub-Tenon space and drug localization/distribution in the sub-Tenon space were analyzed. The sub-Tenon spaces of 12 of 11 patients were visualized with OCT during sub-Tenon injection up to 10-13 mm fr
