Congenital anomalies of the optic disc: insights from optical coherence tomography imaging.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Congenital anomalies of the optic nerve are rare but significant causes of visual dysfunction in children and adults. Accurate diagnosis is dependent on a thorough funduscopic examination, but can be enhanced by imaging information garnered from optical coherence tomography (OCT). We review common congenital optic nerve anomalies, including optic disc pit, optic nerve coloboma, morning glory disc anomaly, and hypoplasia of the optic nerve, review their systemic associations, and discuss insights from OCT imaging. RECENT FINDINGS: Optic disc pits are a result of a defect in

Optical coherence tomography angiography of optic nerve head and parafovea in multiple sclerosis.

AIMS: To investigate swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography in the optic nerve head (ONH) and parafoveal regions in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS: Fifty-two MS eyes and 21 healthy control (HC) eyes were included. There were two MS subgroups: 38 MS eyes without an optic neuritis (ON) history (MS -ON), and 14 MS eyes with an ON history (MS +ON). The OCT images were captured by high-speed 1050 nm swept-source OCT. The ONH flow index (FI) and parafoveal FI were quantified from OCT angiograms. RESULTS: The mean ONH FI was 0.160 ± 0.010 for the HC group, 0.156

Evaluation of coexisting optic nerve head drusen and glaucoma with optical coherence tomography.

OBJECTIVE: Optic nerve head drusen often make evaluation of the nerve head difficult to interpret. In addition, visual field defects are known to occur in patients with optic disk drusen, resembling glaucomatous damage. The authors report two cases of coincident optic nerve head drusen and glaucoma, in which the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in evaluating the nerve fiber layer was beneficial. PARTICIPANTS: Two patients with both optic nerve head drusen and glaucoma, one with primary open angle glaucoma, the other with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma were evaluated. Both patients had as

Optical coherence tomography of a coexisting optic nerve cyst and optic disc pit: a case report.

We describe a rare case of an optic pit located over the nasal portion of the disc that was independent of a coexisting optic nerve cyst. A healthy 35-year-old patient was referred to our clinic seeking alternative treatment options because his previous ophthalmologist had suggested evisceration and orbital surgery for a suspected orbital malignancy. Our examinations revealed a gray lesion located within the right disc cup that was associated with a round lesion at the retrobulbar optic nerve. Based on optical coherence tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings, we believe that our pa

Optical coherence tomography angiography of the peripapillary retina and optic nerve head in dominant optic atrophy.

Peripapillar and nerve head vessel density (VD) was measured in 10 patients affected by Dominant optic atrophy (DOA) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) and compared to the measurements of 15 age- and gender-matched controls. DOA patients showed VD reduction, mostly in the temporal and inferotemporal peripapillary sectors, according to the preferential involvement of the papillomacular bundle. Despite poor best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), OCT-A revealed good repeatability. VD correlated with functional (mean deviation of visual field and BCVA) and structural (retinal ner
