Alveolar bone resorption and the center of resistance modification (3-D analysis by means of the finite element method).

The main goal of this research was to study the behavior of initial tooth displacements associated with alveolar bone loss situations when loaded by a force of 1 N. The analysis of displacements was carried out by the finite element method. Six 3-dimensional models of an upper central incisor (designated Geramy 391 to 396) with 1 to 8 mm of alveolar bone loss were formulated and used by the author. Center of rotation and center of resistance were located for the various stages of alveolar bone loss. The results revealed that the moment/force ratio (at the bracket level) required to produce bod

Abfraction lesions: etiology, diagnosis, and treatment options.

Abfraction is a type of noncarious cervical lesion (NCCL) characterized by loss of tooth tissues with different clinical appearances. Eviden … tive intervention and occlusal adjustment are not indicated as treatment options to prevent further tooth loss or progression of abfraction. The clinical decision to restore abfraction lesions may be based on the need to replace form and function or to relieve hypersensitivity of severely compromised teeth or for esthetic reasons.

A longitudinal assessment of periodontal disease in Yorkshire terriers.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease is the most common oral disease of dogs and has been associated with systemic disease. The purpose of the present study was to determine the extent of periodontal disease in a population of Yorkshire terrier dogs with and without a tooth brushing regimen. Each dog was assessed under general anaesthesia two to five times between 37 and 78 weeks of age. The extent of gingivitis and periodontitis was ascertained for every tooth in the mouth. Gingivitis was measured using time to bleeding on probing, and periodontitis was based on extent of clinical attachment loss

Fate of the molar dental lamina in the monophyodont mouse.

The successional dental lamina (SDL) plays an essential role in the development of replacement teeth in diphyodont and polyphyodont animals. A morphologically similar structure, the rudimental successional dental lamina (RSDL), has been described in monophyodont (only one tooth generation) lizards on the lingual side of the developing functional tooth. This rudimentary lamina regresses, which has been proposed to play a role in preventing the formation of future generations of teeth. A similar rudimentary lingual structure has been reported associated with the first molar in the monophyodont m

Prevalence and technical standard of endodontic treatment in a Swedish population. A longitudinal study.

The aims of this thesis were to study longitudinally the tooth mortality, prevalence and technical standard of endodontic treatment as well … iographic surveys from 200 patients examined twice with an interval of 5-7 years. It was found that tooth losses were evenly distributed in the different age-groups and that molars were lost more often than teeth in the frontal region. Furthermore, endodontically treated teeth were lost more often than other teeth and the quality of the root filling affected …

The impact of the number of remaining teeth on the risk of frailty: a meta-analysis.

Frailty is commonly linked to a range of factors, and recent reports have highlighted its connection to the number of teeth. The goal of thi … itivity analyses yielded consistent results. According to this meta-analysis and systematic review, tooth loss is considered a potential marker of frailty. Further studies are needed to establish the causality of this relationship.

Exploring Oral Function, Protein Intake, and Risk of Sarcopenia: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia is loss of both muscle mass and function with age and is associated with inadequate protein intake. However, evidence to suggest an association with oral health is less clear. OBJECTIVE: To scope peer-reviewed published evidence (2000-2022) pertaining to oral function in relation to sarcopenia and/or protein intake in older people. METHODS: CINAHL, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus were searched. Included were peer-reviewed studies measuring oral function (e.g., tooth loss, salivary flow masticatory function, strength of muscles of mastication, and tongue pressure) and a me…

Implant-supported fixed dental prostheses with cantilever extensions: State of the art and future perspectives.

Partial fixed dental prostheses supported by dental implants have become a reliable long-term treatment option. Nevertheless, the replacement of two adjacent missing teeth, irrespective of location, still represents a clinical challenge. To overcome this, the use of fixed dental prostheses with cantilever extensions has gained popularity with a view to limiting morbidity, reducing costs and avoiding major surgical interventions prior to implant placement. The present review summarises the level of evidence for the use of fixed dental prostheses with cantilever extensions both in the posterior

Restorative dentistry clinical decision-making for hypodontia: managing missing premolar teeth.

Hypodontia is a relatively common clinical condition and the second premolar tooth is the most common tooth that fails to develop (excluding third molars). For some patients, no treatment is required, as there is little, if any, consequence of the condition. For other patients, the missing teeth are part of a more complex dental presentation, requiring specialist dental management. This paper describes the clinical decision-making process and explores the options for managing this presentation of hypodontia.

Tooth autotransplantation: an overview and case study.

It is not uncommon for children or young adults to have congenitally missing teeth or early loss of teeth from trauma or caries. The restorative options are typically bridges, implants, and removable appliances. Often overlooked and misunderstood, another treatment option exists in autotransplantation, where a tooth is moved from one site to another in the same individual. Autotransplantation is well studied and has predictable results comparable to implants, with reported success rates often greater than 90%. This article will provide an overview of autotransplantation plantation, its indicat

Association between masticatory dysfunction and gastroesophageal reflux disease: A population-based study in the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Caries and periodontal disease may cause tooth losses and chewing difficulty, especially in the elderly. Ingesting poorly chewed food may delay gastric emptying and favour the development of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the association between masticatory dysfunction and GERD in the elderly from a rural area in southern Brazil. METHODS: This census invited all 489 elderly from a city to participate. The study used a GERD symptoms questionnaire, followed by an oral examination. Masticatory dysfunction was analysed based on the chewing …

Functional human T-cell immunity and osteoprotegerin ligand control alveolar bone destruction in periodontal infection.

Periodontitis, a prime cause of tooth loss in humans, is implicated in the increased risk of systemic diseases such as heart failure, stroke, and bacterial pneumonia. The mechanisms by which periodontitis and antibacterial immunity lead to alveolar bone and tooth loss are poorly understood. To study the human immune response to specific periodontal infections, we transplanted human peripheral blood lymphocytes (HuPBLs) from periodontitis patients into NOD/SCID mice. Oral challenge of HuPBL-NOD/SCID mice with Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, a well-known Gram-negative anaerobic microorgani…

Modified distal shoe appliance for the loss of a primary second molar: a case report.

Preservation of primary teeth until their normal exfoliation plays a crucial role in preventive and interceptive dentistry. Premature loss of the primary second molar prior to the eruption of the permanent first molar in the absence of the primary second molar can lead to mesial movement and migration of the permanent molar before and during its eruption. In such cases, an intra-alveolar type of space maintainer to guide the eruption of the permanent first molar is indicated. In certain cases, however, the conventional design is not practical. This paper describes a new design for distal shoe
