Risk factors for revision amputation and infection after definitive closure of traumatic amputations: a retrospective cohort study at a Level I academic trauma center.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors for revision amputation and postoperative infection after definitive closure of traumatic amputations. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients presenting with traumatic lower extremity amputation or injuries requiring amputation during the initial operative intervention at a level one trauma center between January 2005 and April 2024. Patients under 18 or without an acute fracture in the amputated limb were excluded. Collected variables included mechanism of injury, time to antibiotics and debridement, and

A prospective single center non randomized clinical trial of autologous skin cells with platelet rich plasma for diabetic ulcer and trauma injuries patients.

Split-thickness skin grafts (SSG) for wound treatment has drawbacks, including trauma during skin harvesting, limited availability of healthy skin, pain, scarring, and suitability concerns for certain patients. However, "skin cell drop" presents a promising solution. This fully autologous therapy eliminates rejection and contamination risks, while promoting wound healing with platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Harvested from the patient's own skin biopsy in bedside ward setting, these cells seamlessly integrate into the skin, overcoming many limitations of SSG. This study was conducted to determine t

Outcomes of abdominal wall closure with fascial bridging using a polyglactin 910 (Vicryl) Mesh following non-trauma laparotomy: a multi-center study.

INTRODUCTION: Complete primary fascial closure following midline laparotomy is occasionally unachievable, necessitating abdominal wall closure via fascial bridging with polyglactin 910 (Vicryl) mesh. Despite its frequent use, literature on the outcomes of Vicryl mesh for fascial bridging remains sparse and controversial, with some studies indicating potential associations with enterocutaneous fistulas and bowel obstruction. This study evaluates the outcomes of fascial bridging utilizing Vicryl mesh for non-trauma laparotomies. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of adult patients w

Three distinct patterns of mental health response following accidents in mountain sports: a follow-up study of individuals treated at a tertiary trauma center.

The restorative effect of physical activity in alpine environments on mental and physical health is well recognized. However, a risk of accidents and post-accident mental health problems is inherent to every sport. We aimed to characterize mental health in individuals following mountain sport accidents requiring professional medical management. Adult victims of mountain sport accidents treated at the hospital of the Medical University of Innsbruck (Austria) between 2018 and 2020 completed a cross-sectional survey at least 6 months following the admission (median 44 months, n = 307). Symptoms o

Enhancing maternal survival in traumatic cardiovascular collapse during pregnancy: A case series on resuscitative hysterotomy (RH) from a level 1 trauma center.

BACKGROUND: Trauma during pregnancy presents multifaceted risks to both the developing fetus and the expectant mother due to pregnancy-induced physiological adaptations that affect the response to traumatic injuries. The infrequent occurrence of cardiac arrest during pregnancy necessitates interventions such as perimortem cesarean section (PMCS), now termed resuscitative hysterotomy. While early resuscitative hysterotomy focused primarily on fetal survival, more recent literature reports substantial maternal benefits. Resuscitative hysterotomy can lead to the restoration of maternal pulse and

The "non-preventable" preventable transfer? An analysis of the care from support services that injured children transferred to a level 1 pediatric trauma center receive.

PURPOSE: Almost 30% of pediatric trauma transfers to our facility have previously been shown to be potentially preventable transfers (PT). However, we sought to evaluate what care from support services these PT received during admission. METHODS: Traumatically injured children transferred between January 2014 and June 2019 were retrospectively analyzed. A PT was defined as a child who was discharged within 36 h of arrival without surgical intervention or advanced imaging studies. PT that received support services were compared to those that did not to determine which patients may benefit from
