The aims of this review are (i) to summarize and evaluate current knowledge on the association between childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in pregnant and postpartum women, (ii) to provide suggestions for future research on this topic, and (iii) to highlight some clinical implications. Relevant publications were identified through literature searches of four databases (PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PsycINFO, and PsycARTICLES) using keywords such as "child abuse," "posttraumatic stress," "pregnancy," and "postpartum"

OBJECTIVE: To describe the experience of a research clinic diagnosing possible AD during the last two decades.
BACKGROUND: The National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke-Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association criteria for possible AD are generally used to indicate that a patient has AD in association with another disease process that could by itself cause dementia. There are no studies describing how these criteria should be applied, and there are no descriptions of functional and cognitive progression or survival in possible AD.
METHODS: The aut

Patients receiving chronic hemodialysis frequently experience significant physical, psychological, and emotional stress that often contributes to patients' dysregulation, treatment resistance, and behaviors labeled as "difficult." Traditional responses to these situations can unintentionally escalate the distress the patient is experiencing and negatively affect the staff-patient relationship. This article explores patient behavior through the lens of emotional intelligence, trauma-informed care, and nervous system regulation. Examples from real-world clinical experiences are used to demonstra

PURPOSE: Although electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has long been used in psychiatry, it remains controversial due to its neurobiological mechanism and side effects. Exploring patient experiences with ECT can provide evidence for-or against-its use. The current study aimed to comprehensively understand patients' ECT experiences by synthesizing results from qualitative studies involving patients who underwent ECT.
METHOD: A meta-synthesis of studies from 2010 to 2024 was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Web of Science. Of 1,255 articles identified, 12 met inclusion criteria. Authors i

Europe is in the midst of a large-scale migration crisis, which has implications for healthcare provision for asylum-seeking children and families. The authors set out to identify the psychological status of asylum-seeking children and highlight their needs. A search of three electronic databases was carried out, resulting in 15 studies. Data show that asylum-seeking children appear to experience many mental health difficulties, including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, self-harm, sleep disturbance and behavioural difficulties. The daily living situation includes a range of psychol

A high incidence of hypokalaemia was noted in Trauma and Orthopaedics of Ninewells Hospital. We sought to establish the reason behind this and implemented three PDSA cycles via questionnaires to 30 ward staff, both doctors and nurses over a 1 week period in December, February and July 2016. Key baseline measures include availability of IV fluids with 40mmol potassium on the wards, confidence prescribing or administering IV fluids with 40mmol potassium, necessity for cardiac monitoring during slow IV potassium replacement and recognition of confusion and learning need in this area. Intervention

: The experience of military sexual trauma (MST), which can result from assault, battery, or harassment of a sexual nature, may jeopardize the mental health of service members as well as that of their family members, colleagues, and community members. Although a greater proportion of female than male service members are subjected to MST, the Department of Defense estimates that the absolute numbers of affected men and women, across all ranks and branches of military service, are nearly equal because roughly 85% of military members are men. Little research has explored the effects of MST on men

There are currently 22.5 million living U.S. military veterans, and this number is expected to increase dramatically as military personnel return from Iraq and Afghanistan. Although honorably discharged veterans may qualify for health care through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), only about 25% of all veterans take advantage of this benefit; a majority seek services in non-VA settings. It's imperative for nurses in all civilian care settings to understand the impact that military service has on veterans' health. This article provides an overview of veterans' unique health care iss

BACKGROUND: Open leg fractures are severe and common injuries. When a free flap and/or a local pedicled flap is not feasible or has failed, the cross-leg flap remains a last-resort option to avoid amputation. The aim of this study is to explain the technical aspects and clinical advantages of the distal bipedicled "supra cross-leg" flap, based on a series of four cases.
METHODS: Four patients underwent reconstruction using a distal bipedicled "supra cross-leg" flap between 2016 and 2026 at HIA Percy, a Level I trauma center and burn treatment center (Clamart, France). Demographic, trauma-rela

Blunt chest trauma is associated with a high risk of morbidity and mortality. Complications in blunt chest trauma develop secondary to rib fractures as a consequence of pain and inadequate ventilation. This literature review aimed to examine clinical interventions in rib fractures and their impact on patient and hospital outcomes. A systematic search strategy, using a structured clinical question and defined search terms, was performed in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and the Cochrane Library. The search was limited to studies of adult humans from 1990-March 2014 and yielded 977 articles, which were

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness and benefits of regionalized trauma care are well substantiated; however, the effectiveness of regionalized burn care and potential benefits of burn center verification have not been fully validated.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective study of all acute burn admissions using a statewide discharge database from October 1, 2000, to September 30, 2007. Demographics, referral patterns, care practices, and outcomes were compared between 2 American Burn Association (ABA)-verified burn centers (VBCs) and the remaining 107 nonburn centers (NBCs) in North Carolina.

OBJECTIVE: Severely head-injured patients have traditionally been maintained in the head-up position to ameliorate the effects of increased intracranial pressure (ICP). However, it has been reported that the supine position may improve cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and outcome. We sought to determine the impact of supine and 30 degrees semirecumbent postures on cerebrovascular dynamics and global as well as regional cerebral oxygenation within 24 hours of trauma.
METHODS: Patients with a closed head injury and a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 8 or less were included in the study. On admissio

The primary mission of any intensive care unit (ICU) is to provide critically ill patients with high-quality care and an atmosphere in which to recuperate. However, all too often, the intensive environment, which is often busy, chaotic, and noisy, may contribute to just the opposite. Patients overstimulated with noise, lights, and other distractions often suffer from sleep deprivation. Research in medicine and nursing has shown that sleep deprivation can have detrimental effects on an ailing patient. Therefore, a quiet time program was developed in the neuro-ICU to reduce noise and light level

No death is easy, but we hope to die peacefully, with our loved ones surrounding us, comforted by each other's presence and the knowledge that the right decision has been made. The nurse's actions in the intensive care unit setting can promote hope for a comfortable place to say goodbye for the patient and his/her loved ones and the nursing staff and physicians. When nurses make the intensive care unit a comfortable place for the dying patients and their loved ones, we also make the patients' deaths comfortable for us. The problems encountered in implementing end-of-life care are explored in t

AIM: The purpose of this study was to explore the types and frequency of verbal abuse of nurses by other nurses. Further, this study explored the components, characteristics, consequences and effects of abuse in an effort to better understand the dynamics of verbal abuse of nurses in the workplace. Nurses who experience occupational burnout are more likely to abuse other nurses.
BACKGROUND: It is believed that nurses have been historically subjected to verbal abuse by colleagues, something previously considered to be done primarily by doctors. The effects and consequences of verbal abuse can

With obesity on the rise in the United States, most nurses will probably encounter the unique challenges that result from the pathophysiological changes in this population. The combination of morbid obesity and any other disease process or injury create complex medical management issues for caregivers during hospitalization and after discharge. Complications of spinal cord injury are intensified with obesity. Prevention and treatment of secondary complications require nursing practice to go above and beyond the standards of care. This paper clearly illustrates the nursing challenges by focusin

Oropharyngeal dysphagia is common in moderate-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) patients and can have serious consequences. Delaying feeding in these patients can also be detrimental. Nonetheless, the psychometric properties of screening tools that can promptly identify dysphagia have never been tested in these neurotrauma populations. This study aimed to: (1) adapt, translate, and validate the content of the French-Canadian version of the the Standardized Swallowing Assessment (SSA) tool to meet the needs of moderate-severe TBI and cervical SCI patients
