The prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection and smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis in people with household close contact with tuberculosis in north of iran.

One of the recommended strategies for preventing tuberculosis is to screen high-risk populations with respect to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) infection. The aim of the present study was to investigate latent infection and active tuberculosis in people with close household contact. It was a cross-sectional descriptive, analytical study with the sample size of 668 people from homes with one infected resident. In order to diagnose tuberculosis latent infection, the PPD test was done. To determine patients with smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis, three sputum samples were taken from every pa

Performance of Chest CT-Based Artificial Intelligence Models in Distinguishing Pulmonary Mucormycosis, Invasive Pulmonary Aspergillosis, and Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

In clinical practice, differentiating among pulmonary mucormycosis (PM), invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA), and pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) can be challenging. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of chest CT-based artificial intelligence (AI) models in distinguishing among these three diseases. Patients with confirmed PM, IPA, or PTB were retrospectively recruited from three tertiary hospitals. Two models were developed: unanotated supervised training (UST) model trained with original CT images and annotated supervised training (AST) model trained with manually annotated lesion

[Pathogenesis of chronic disseminated acinar pulmonary tuberculosis: Oka's classification of pulmonary tuberculosis type IIB--a discussion through an analysis of two typical cases].

PURPOSE: To elucidate the pathogenesis of chronic disseminated acinar pulmonary tuberculosis (Oka's classification type IIB). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The subjects are two cases of chronic disseminated acinar pulmonary tuberculosis. The pathogenesis were discussed through an analysis of their radiologic findings on admission and in the past. RESULTS: Case 1 is a 36 year-old woman whose complaint was slight fever and cervical lymphadenopathy for past four months. Disseminated granular shadows were observed in both lung fields on the chest X-ray on admission. The CT examination indicated that eac

Prevalence and spectrum of fungal pathogens in pulmonary tuberculosis patients.

Pulmonary fungal infections are increasingly recognized as significant co-infections in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). Therefore, it is of interest to determine the prevalence and spectrum of fungal pathogens in patients with suspected and confirmed PTB. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 180 patients at MGM Medical College, Indore, India, with sputum samples processed for fungal culture. Fungal culture positivity was observed in 20% of the patients, with aspergillus species being the most commonly isolated pathogen. Thus, we show the need for routine mycological examination

The role and mechanisms of multiple immunoregulatory cells in pulmonary tuberculosis.

Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is a complex respiratory illness and a leading cause of mortality from infectious diseases globally. The regulation of the host immune response is integral to the chronic infection process of PTB. In this process, the excessive activation of the host's negative immune regulatory mechanisms serves as the core pathological basis driving infection chronicity and facilitating pathogen immune evasion. Many reviews highlight successful therapeutic approaches aimed at regulatory immune cells. Understanding the roles of various regulatory immune cells in PTB is of paramoun

Role of Iron Indices in Anemia in Patients With Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

Iron indices are pivotal in tuberculosis (TB) owing to their influence on pathogens and immune reactions. Iron indices substantially affect TB progression, resulting in inflammation and anemia. Tuberculosis can induce iron deficiency or excess that may result in compromised immunological function. This study examined the iron index hemoglobin (Hb), serum iron, ferritin, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC), and transferrin saturation (TSAT) in PTB patients. Between January 2016 and December 2018, the Port Sudan Tuberculosis Diagnostic Center studied a co

Risk factors for postoperative complications in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: The risk factors associated with postoperative complications following pulmonary resection in individuals with tuberculosis remain incompletely understood. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of baseline data-including sex, age, BMI, comorbidities, previous COVID-19 status, smoking history, respiratory function, ASA grade, affected lung lobe, and operative factors-in patients who underwent surgical treatment at Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital between January 2018 and September 2022. RESULTS: This study included 204 patients diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) who unde

Establishment and evaluation of a diagnostic model for severe pulmonary tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing severe pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) remains challenging because of the absence of reliable biomarkers, delaying management and risk prediction. This study aimed to identify key risk factors for severe PTB and develop a predictive model for early assessment and intervention. METHODS: Between January 2022 and December 2023, 182 patients with PTB were included and categorized as having non-severe PTB (n = 112) or severe PTB (n = 70), defined as active PTB involving three or more lung fields on chest radiography. Demographic data, hematological parameters, vascular endothel

Risk Factors for Pulmonary Tuberculosis in an Urban Area of Algeria.

BACKGROUND: Algeria and North Africa have limited data on tuberculosis (TB) risk factors. In addition, pretreatment assessments often do not include fasting blood glucose or renal function tests. These biological tests are only carried out if the interview and the results of the biochemical analysis of the urine make it possible to identify a patient at risk. This study aimed to identify the main risk factors for pulmonary TB (PT) in people aged 15 years and over in Blida and to specify the unrecognised rates of diabetes and chronic renal failure in conjunction with TB. METHODS: We conducted

Development of a nomogram model for predicting pulmonary tuberculosis activity.

Timely and accurate identification of active pulmonary tuberculosis (APTB) is essential for effective treatment and public health control. This study aimed to develop a predictive nomogram using routine laboratory parameters to distinguish APTB from non-active pulmonary tuberculosis. A retrospective observational study was conducted at a single tertiary hospital from January 2021 to December 2024. A total of 356 newly diagnosed PTB patients were enrolled and classified into APTB (n = 225) or non-active pulmonary tuberculosis (n = 131) groups based on clinical, radiological, and microbiological

Evaluation of Serum Iron Profile in Patients with Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

Approximately 10.0% of tuberculosis (TB) Infected individuals develop clinical disease in the absence of immune suppression suggests that individual factors may play a role in the response to infection. Body's immune function is boosted by micronutrient and also plays a major role in response to tubercular infection. Someone, may argue that cell mediated immunity is compromised in iron deficiency before anemia becomes apparent. This descriptive observational study intended to assess serum iron profile in patients suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis. This study included 56 newly diagnosed spu

Pathology of pulmonary tuberculosis: has the tiger changed it's stripes?

BACKGROUND: India accounts for the highest number of TB cases globally (almost one-fifth of the global burden and almost two-thirds of the cases in South East Asia. Furthermore, the development of drug resistance of varying levels such as multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB), extensively-drug resistance TB (XDR-TB) and total-drug resistant TB (TDR-TB) has been on the increase, and now India also features in the 27 high-MDRTB-burden countries. Almost parallel to these developments, in the last few years, we have been encountering less common morphological forms of pulmonary TB (PTB) at autopsies. W

Characterization of oral swab samples for diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis.

Oral swab analysis (OSA) has been shown to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) DNA in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). In previous analyses, qPCR testing of swab samples collected from tongue dorsa was up to 93% sensitive relative to sputum GeneXpert, when 2 swabs per patient were tested. The present study modified sample collection methods to increase sample biomass and characterized the viability of bacilli present in tongue swabs. A qPCR targeting conserved bacterial ribosomal rRNA gene (rDNA) sequences was used to quantify bacterial biomass in samples. There was no detectable
