BACKGROUND: There have been insufficient reports to date regarding the treatment of cervical spinal tuberculosis, and the optimal surgical approaches to treating this condition have yet to be established.
CASE REPORT: This report describes the treatment of a case of tuberculosis associated with a large abscess and pronounced kyphosis through the use of a combined anterior and posterior approach with the aid of the Jackson operating table. This patient did not exhibit any sensorimotor abnormalities of the upper extremities, lower extremities, or trunk, and presented with symmetrical bilateral

A 24-year-old man with tuberculosis meningitis developed acute paraplegia and sensory disturbances 5 weeks after receiving conventional antituberculous therapy. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intradural extramedullary long segmental mass mimicking en plaque meningioma at the T2-T6 vertebrae levels. Prompt surgical decompression was performed. A histology examination of the mass revealed a tuberculoma. After surgery, the patient showed improved motor power and a normal bladder function. Intradural extramedullary tuberculoma of the spinal cord is rare complication of tuberculosis meningi

BACKGROUND: A definitive diagnosis of spinal tuberculosis (TB) remains challenging. The "gold standard" is to obtain histopathological confirmation of the lesion. This analysis highlights how to avoid missing the diagnosis of an extramedullary myeloid sarcoma (EMS) versus TB.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 25-year-old male presented with paraparesis. Although this was first attributed to TB spondylodiscitis, a PET-CT and reevaluation of the biopsy specimen both confirmed the diagnosis of an EMS.
CONCLUSION: Nontubercular spinal disease should be suspected when a patient deteriorates despite the institu

STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective study.
OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively analyze the safety and efficacy of anterior lesion debridement and bone grafting combined with short-segment internal fixation for the treatment of patients with thoracolumbar tuberculosis. There is currently no unified standard in the academic community for surgical treatment of spinal tuberculosis. This study proposes a new surgical approach for specific thoracolumbar tuberculosis.
METHODS: Patients (n = 65) who underwent anterior lesion debridement and bone grafting combined with short-segment internal fixation at

CT scans of fifteen patients with tuberculosis of the spine without neurological deficit were analysed for canal encroachment. We calculated that up to 76% encroachment of the spinal canal by tubercular pathological tissue is compatible with undisturbed neural status.

In spite of recent advances in diagnosis and chemotherapy of tuberculosis, prognosis of tuberculosis of the central nervous system (CNS) is still poor. We evaluated clinical characteristics of 14 patients with the CNS tuberculosis (10 male and 4 female, 21 to 71 years of age) who were hospitalized at IMCJ from 1988 to 1997. Twelve patients had tuberculous meningitis (2 of them had also intracranial tuberculoma), 1 had intracranial tuberculoma and 1 had spinal cord tuberculosis. For the acid-fast bacilli, the smears of cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) were all negative but the cultures for M. tubercu

Tuberculous spondylodiscitis can closely mimic spinal metastasis, particularly in patients with coexisting malignancy risk factors and atypical imaging findings. We report a diagnostically challenging case of a 70-year-old male with chronic hepatitis B infection who presented with progressive midback pain and was found to have a hypervascular hepatic mass with elevated serum alpha-fetoprotein levels, raising strong suspicion for hepatocellular carcinoma with vertebral metastasis. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated destructive D10-D11 spondylodiscitis with posterior element involvement and

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The paper presents a monocentric retrospective study of patients treated surgically for spinal tuberculosis. Clinical and radiological results are analysed, early and late complications are recorded. The study aims to answer the following questions. 1. Can we use instrumentation to restore the stability and alignment in the infected spinal focus? 2. Should we always perform radical anterior resection of TBC lesions? 3. What is the prognosis of surgical treatment of TBC patients with neurological deficit manifestation? MATERIAL AND METHODS Between 2010 and 2020, a total of

Pachymeningitis is a fibrosing and inflammatory process, which involves the dura mater. Some pachymeningitis are cranial and induce headaches and cranial nerve palsies. Others are spinal and responsible for nerve roots or spinal cord compression. MRI shows contrast enhancement thickening of the dura mater. Etiologies are infectious (syphilis, tuberculosis, etc.) or inflammatory (sarcoidosis, granulomatosis with polyangiitis, IgG4-related disease, idiopathic). Corticosteroids are the main treatment. The use of immunosuppressive drugs or rituximab is yet to be determined and probably adapted to

A child from a Roman necropolis in Pécs, Hungary (4th century CE) was initially diagnosed with severe spinal osteomyelitis. The post-cranial skeleton displayed bone alterations in the lower thoracic and upper lumbar segments, including vertebral body destruction, collapse and sharp kyphosis, and additional multiple rib lesions, suggesting a most likely diagnosis of pulmonary and spinal tuberculosis. This study discusses a number of selected diagnoses in the context of our pathological findings, complementing the macroscopic examination with radiological and biomolecular analyses.

The authors report an unusual case of spinal tuberculosis involving the posterior arch of T12 without disk lesion in a 20-year-old woman presenting with posterior compression of the spinal cord. The diagnosis was suggested at CT and MR imaging and confirmed by histological study after surgical resection. CT provides good evaluation of the bony lesion and may suggest intraspinal extension. MRI is superior for evaluation of cord compression. The patient improved after surgical and medical treatment. The imaging features of this entity are reviewed.

The indications for an anterior approach are lesions located predominantly in the body of the vertebra or intervertebral disks. Among these are spondylolisthesis, tuberculosis of the spine, prolapsed intervertebral disks, neoplasms, spinal biopsies, correction of fixed spinal curves, fractures, and fracture dislocations of the spine. Despite many indications, this approach is rarely used, primarily because of unfamiliarity with the surgical field, instrumentation, and oral microbiota. Use of appropriate disciplines and consultations enabled this patient to receive comprehensive treatment from

Actinomycosis is a gram positive commensal bacteria. In predisposed individuals like immunocompromised patients, it can cause myriad lesions involving virtually any organ of the body. Involvement of spinal cord with its compression is rare though. We are reporting here a case of 30-year-old immunocompetent male who presented with weakness of left lower limb. Radiologically differential diagnosis was tuberculosis or lymphoma of spinal cord. Histopathology showed actinomycotic colonies that were periodic Schiff (PAS) positive and revealed gram positive filamentous bacteria.

While tuberculosis is globally very prevalent, especially in the developing world, tuberculosis of the central nervous system (CNS) (including Pott's `disease) is an extremely rare occurrence for neurology/neurosurgery departments in the modern era. It is normally treated via rifampin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol (RIPE) therapy with the need for surgical intervention deemed by the presence of neurological deficiency or abscess, spinal instability, or significant kyphosis. Here we describe a case of an elderly woman with Pott's disease and a history of HIV presenting with neurologic

INTRODUCTION: The features of paradoxical reactions (PR) that occurred in non-HIV infected patients are rare and not well known.
CASE REPORT: The authors reported the case of a 21years old, non-immunocompromised, and HIV negative patient treated for disseminated tuberculosis. PR occurred after 8months after initiation of antituberculous treatment. PR presented as left cervical lymphadenopathy, pulmonary, pleural, costal and spinal location of the tuberculosis. The antituberculous drugs were prolonged. Patient's clinical symptoms improved initially. However, left inguinal lymphadenopathy appea

The MRI findings of 18 proven cases of central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis were reviewed; 10 patients were seropositive for HIV. All had medical, laboratory, or surgical proof of CNS tuberculosis. Eleven patients had meningitis, of whom two also had arachnoiditis. Five patients had focal intra-axial tuberculomas: four brain masses and one an intramedullary spinal lesion. Two patients had focal extra-axial tuberculomas: one in the pontine cistern, and one in the spine. In all 11 patients with meningitis MRI showed diffuse, thick, meningeal enhancement. All intraparenchymal tuberculomas sh
