[Study on injury of vascular intima with hemostatic clamp and optimization of protective strategy].

Objective: To explore the intimal injury of two kinds of hemostatic clips under different clamping forces, and to optimize and verify the calculation formula of minimum occlusion force (MOF), so as to provide theoretical basis for selecting appropriate hemostatic clips to reduce vascular injury. Methods: A total of 96 male SD rats with body weight ranging from 280 to 300 g (Animal Experimental Center of Shanxi Medical University) were randomly assigned to metal hemostatic clip group (n=48) and disposable hemostatic clip group (n=48) by random number table method. Each group was further divided

Coronary artery bypass graft: why is the saphenous vein prone to intimal hyperplasia?

Proliferation and migration of smooth muscle cells and the resultant intimal hyperplasia cause coronary artery bypass graft failure. Both internal mammary artery and saphenous vein are the most commonly used bypass conduits. Although an internal mammary artery graft is immune to restenosis, a saphenous vein graft is prone to develop restenosis. We found significantly higher activity of phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) in the smooth muscle cells of the internal mammary artery than in the saphenous vein. In this article, we critically review the pathophysiology of vein-graft failure with de

Serial intravascular ultrasound analysis of the impact of myocardial bridge on neointimal proliferation after coronary stenting in patients with acute myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Mechanisms underlying the association between myocardial bridge (MB)-stenting and in-stent restenosis (ISR) are still unclear. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of MB on ISR using intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). METHODS: In the Harmonizing Outcomes with Revascularization and Stents in Acute Myocardial Infarction (HORIZONS-AMI) trial, 100 left anterior descending artery (LAD) culprit lesions (79 treated with paclitaxel-eluting stents [PES] and 21 treated with bare metal stents) were imaged with serial IVUS immediately postprocedure and at 13 months. RESULTS: At baseline the LAD st

Low bone mineral density is related to atherosclerosis in postmenopausal Moroccan women.

BACKGROUND: Some studies have implicated several possible metabolic linkages between osteoporosis and vascular calcification, including estrogen deficiency, vitamin D excess, vitamin K deficiency and lipid oxidation products. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether osteoporosis and atherosclerosis are related to each other or are independent processes, both related to aging. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the correlation between arterial thickening and bone status in a sample of apparently healthy Moroccan women. METHODS: Seventy-two postmenopausal women were studied.

Self-expandable nitinol stent placement in homocysteinemic porcine aorta.

PURPOSE: To compare aortic intimal thickening of normal and hyperhomocysteinemic pigs (induced with a methionine-rich diet) following placement of a self-expanding nitinol stent. METHODS: Eighteen Macau pigs were used. They were older than eight weeks in age and had an average weight of 30 kg. Pigs were randomly divided into two groups. The first, Group C (control), was fed a regular diet, and the second group, Group M, was fed a methionine-rich diet for 30 days to induce hyperhomocysteinemia. The self-expandable nitinol stents were 25mm in length and 8 mm in diameter after expansion. Blood s

Novel bioabsorbable salicylate-based polymer as a drug-eluting stent coating.

BACKGROUND: Permanent polymers used in current drug-eluting stents (DES) can trigger chronic inflammation and hypersensitivity reactions, which may contribute to the increased risk of late thrombosis and rebound restenosis. Therefore, optimal polymer selection and the use of completely absorbable but biocompatible polymers are expected to minimize these risks. OBJECTIVES: We sought to evaluate a novel, potentially innately anti-inflammatory, bioabsorbable salicylate-based polymer as a DES coating, in a clinically relevant animal model. METHODS: Four types of stents were implanted in pig coro

Radiation effects on the intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery in post-radiotherapy patients with head and neck malignancy.

BACKGROUND: Post-radiation large vessel injury has not received as much attention as microvascular irradiation injury. A few studies have shown that common carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) is increased after radiotherapy to the head and neck. However, in most of these studies, the irradiated subjects also had other major risk factors for atherosclerosis. In this study, irradiated subjects with major risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, history of previous cerebrovascular accident and connective tissue disorder were excluded. OBJECTIVE: To show in a cross-sectional study if radioth

Enhanced endothelium-dependent microvascular responses in patients with Wegener's granulomatosis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess endothelial cell (EC) function of the cutaneous microcirculation in patients with Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) and to relate EC function to EC activation and presence of atherosclerosis. METHODS: We studied 28 WG patients with inactive disease and 28 age and sex matched controls. Common carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), as a measure of atherosclerosis, was determined by ultrasonography. EC function of microcirculation in the fingers was assessed using laser Doppler fluxmetry in combination with iontophoresis of acetylcholine (ACh) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP), whic

First biodegradable metal stent in a child with congenital heart disease: evaluation of macro and histopathology.

New developments in stent technology led to the first biodegradable magnesium stents. To overcome the fundamental restrictions of conventional stent implantation, these new stents may improve interventional therapy, also in small children. What remains after complete degradation of a magnesium stent is of particular interest and concern. At the autopsy, 2 months after the projected complete degradation time of the 3.0 x 10 mm(2) stent, no solid compounds were detected, and the vessel diameter had increased slightly to 3.7 mm. Histological preparation revealed an amorphous to jelly-like substit

Radiological diagnosis and classification of antegrade and retrograde Stanford type A intimal intussusception.

Intimal intussusception is an uncommon variation of aortic dissection, resulting from circumferential detachment and stripping of the intima in the setting of a Stanford type A dissection. The resultant tube of detached intima may prolapse either antegrade into the aortic lumen or retrograde into the left ventricular cavity. We classify these forms of dissection as antegrade and retrograde Stanford type A intimal intussusception. We present two cases with intimal intussusception and a review of the current literature. The majority of previous cases have been reported in the cardiology and card

Accumulation of low density lipoprotein associated cholesterol in calcifying vesicle fractions correlates with intimal thickening in thoracic aortas of juvenile rabbits fed a supplemental cholesterol diet.

BACKGROUND: It has been shown that calcifying vesicles play an important role in aortic calcification and that cholesterol content in the isolated vesicle fraction is increased when rabbits are fed supplemental cholesterol diets. Whether lipoprotein-associated cholesterols and other lipids are also increased in the vesicle fraction and whether the increase correlates with atherosclerosis remain unknown. RESULTS: Fourteen juvenile male rabbits fed an atherogenic diet containing 0.5% cholesterol and 2% peanut oil for 3 months developed varying degrees of hypercholesterolemia and intimal thicken

Cerebrovascular disease associated with sickle cell pulmonary hypertension.

In patients with sickle cell disease, anemia is a recognized risk factor for stroke, death, and the development of pulmonary hypertension. We have proposed that hemolytic anemia results in endothelial dysfunction and vascular instability and can ultimately lead to a proliferative vasculopathy leading to pulmonary hypertension. Consistent with this mechanism of disease, we now report a case series of six patients with obliterative central nervous system vasculopathy who also have pulmonary hypertension and high hemolytic rate. These patients, identified in the course of a prospective screening

Microalbuminuria in patients with previous myocardial infarction.

Microalbuminuria (MA) is a cardiovascular risk factor. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between MA and the intima-media complex of the carotid and brachial artery, endothelial function, glucose metabolism, haemostatic variables and cardiac hypertrophy in patients with coronary heart disease. A total of 123 patients, aged 31-80 years, with a history of previous myocardial infarction and without known diabetes mellitus were examined with B-mode ultrasound of common carotid and brachial arteries, flow-mediated dilatation of the brachial artery and echocardiography. Intimal sarcoma of the pulmonary artery: report of an autopsy case.

Primary pulmonary artery sarcomas (PASs) are rare and lethal tumors. They are easily misdiagnosed as chronic pulmonary embolism, mediastinal mass or tumor emboli, which delay a proper treatment. Although the advanced technologies are now increasingly being used, their diagnosis is usually hard to establish preoperatively at the present time. We report here a case of a 68-year-old female with PAS with lung metastases, who firstly presented with symptoms of common cold and anemia. Although a PAS had been suspected, the final diagnosis of pulmonary intimal sarcoma was made only postoperatively by

Increased carotid wall thickening after radiotherapy on the neck.

Patients treated for head and neck tumours with local radiotherapy (RT) on the neck harbour an increased risk of stroke. This may be due to accelerated atherosclerotic changes within the RT-field; however, the real impact of local RT on the carotid artery remains debatable. The aim of the present study was to assess the difference in carotid wall thickness (intima-media thickness) in 42 unilaterally irradiated parotid tumour patients by performing B-mode ultrasonography. A mean difference in intima-media thickness (IMT) of the irradiated compared with the non-irradiated carotid artery of 0.30
