The purpose of the present study was to empirically identify individuals who differed in their patterns of components derived from the structured interview (SI), and to evaluate whether individuals characterized by the different patterns varied in terms of their risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). The present study represents a reanalysis of data from the Western Collaborative Group Study in which components of Type A were individually related to risk for CHD. Subgroups of individuals who differed in the patterns of their component scores were identified by means of cluster analytic techniq

BACKGROUND: Court-ordered forensic psychiatry treatments (COT) are specifically designed to reduce the risk of violence in mentally disordered offenders. Given their high costs and ethical issues, mental health professionals need admission criteria to be able to select those candidates with optimal benefit. This study analyses offender-related and treatment-related determinants of COT outcome and risk mitigation.
METHODS: This two-year longitudinal study assessed the evolution of 117 adult offenders admitted to a specialized medium-security forensic psychiatry clinic. Treatment outcome includ

Anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) autoantibodies are a hallmark of stiff-person syndrome (SPS) and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). However, patients with concurrent IDDM and SPS often manifest insulin resistance, and SPS-associated IDDM probably has heterogeneous causes. Some patients manifest IDDM associated only with high titers of anti-GAD65 caused by SPS. By contrast, other patients develop IDDM only after being treated with high-dose corticosteroids or they progress to insulin dependency following their treatment with high-dose corticosteroids. The profile of autoantibodi

A survey of the literature on the primary personality of schizophrenics shows that the essential concepts derive from Kraepelin (1893), E. Bleuler (who also introduced the technical term "schizoid", 1911) and C.G. Jung introversion; 1913). E Kretschmer (1921) adopted these preliminary findings and integrated them into his system of "Constitution" which greatly stimulated research in this field. Most of the following investigations confirmed his hypotheses on the basis of clinical impressions. A few only criticised his teaching, particularly as a theoretical concept. In this article we review the role of depression and other related psychological factors in heart disease. The prevalence of heart disease in patients with depression is high, and epidemiological links between depression and heart disease are evident in studies of community samples, psychiatric patients, and heart disease patients. We also describe the links between heart disease and related psychological factors-including vital exhaustion, Type A behavior pattern, anger and hostility, and Type D personality-and summarize proposed mechanisms that may link negative affects with heart disease. The authors review the current literature on psychosocial aspects of duodenal ulcer. The initial simple psychosomatic approach, has evolved to a multifactorial schema in which stress and individual vulnerability plays an important role. Psychological features (personality, Type A behaviour, alexithymia, anxiety, depression) and socioenvironmental factors (stress, life events, coping, social support) are analyzed. Newer aspects like the probable stress influence on immunity and infection by Helicobacter pylori are considered.

The second recorded case of sesquizygotic (SQZ) twins is summarized. It is suspected that SQZ twins result from the fertilization of an egg by two separate spermatozoa, followed by division of the fertilized ovum. Next, recent studies examining how differences in parental affection affect co-twins' personality profiles, the prenatal demise of fetuses during twin pregnancy, a forensic case of heteropaternal superfecundation and selective feticide in dichorionic twins are reviewed. Finally, summaries of newsworthy items featuring an identical twin Oscar winner, a case of 'superfecundated' twins

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic disease requiring medical adherence. However, among adolescents, non-adherence rates may reach up to 75%. Satisfaction or frustration with psychological needs is a crucial factor in the motivation and management of health-related behaviors. This study aimed to examine the differences in good health practices and psychological and physical well-being among adolescents with and without T1D and the mediating role of satisfaction and frustration of psychological needs on the association between good health practices and well-being in this population. Previous reports on cluster headache have shown a hypothalamic dysfunction and a hitherto unrecognized defect in the information processing pathways measured by event-related potentials. As of today, the causes are still unknown; likewise, studies on the psychological factors involved in CH have not yielded relevant data. The aim of our study was to evaluate the presence of a possible correlation between CH and a specific manner of information processing, i.e., an analytic cognitive style. This study applies two cognitive style tests that have not previously been used in the context of cluster

We reviewed the published literature on the association between anger and hostility and risk factors, both physiologic and behavioral, for coronary heart disease (CHD) in youth. The rationale for this review is based on observations that pathology and risk factors associated with CHD in adults, as well as patterns of expressing anger and hostility, often begin in childhood and adolescence; hence, it is imperative that we better understand the relationship between anger and CHD risk factors in young people if we are to develop interventions to change risk factor profiles. This review focuses on characteristics of the Type A behavior pattern in women in studies of demographic characteristics, physiological responses, laboratory performance, and personality. With some exceptions, these characteristics parallel those previously described for Type A men. The incidence of Type A behavior in the United States is comparable for men and women when socioeconomic factors are controlled. Type A behavior in women is positively correlated with socioeconomic status, occupation, education, and incidence of coronary heart disease. Type A women tend to show greater autonomic ar

BACKGROUND: Motivation for treatment on the part of patients with addictive disorders is known to affect their prognosis, and lack thereof is reported to be among the most common reasons for failed treatment adherence and relapse after treatment. This study evaluated the relationship between volunteering, personality, demographic factors, and motivation for treatment.
METHODS: The study was conducted at a substance dependence center in the eastern part of Turkey. Forty-five patients (mean age 37.9±11.2 years) with a substance use disorder were included. They were assessed using the Structured

Head, neck, and facial pain disorders possess characteristic features that, in some ways, distinguish them from other painful disorders. Generally speaking, the headache disorders can be reconciled within the same model of assessment as that of other painful conditions.

A consecutive series of newly-diagnosed patients with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) was compared to two independent control groups chosen from the same patient population for the presence of a Type A behavioral pattern based on the Jenkins Activity Survey. The patients selected as matched controls had painless, reduced central vision and other chorioretinal diseases (Group I), or non-chorioretinal ocular conditions (Group II). The Type A behavior was significantly more frequent in study patients than in either Control Group I (X2 = 6.1 and P less than 0.025) or Control Group II patien
