The efficacy of uvulopharyngopalatoplasty (UPPP) in treating obstructive snoring has been reported from many centers. The reduction of uvula and soft palate may result in palatal incompetence. We examined 23 patients undergoing UPPP pre- and postoperatively and found a slight preoperative hypernasality in three patients. None of our patients had problems with swallowing. The postnatal development of the cerebellar cortex of normal and lurcher (Lc) mutant mice was studied by neurohistological and autoradiographic techniques at ages ranging from 2 days through 18 days after birth. PURPOSE: The study aimed to determine the efficacy of multilevel surgery (hyoid myotomy and suspension with uvulopalatopharyngoplasty) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) for the treatment of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and to clarify whether our surgical protocol could be as effective as CPAP.
METHODS: We conducted a case series study comparing the effects of multilevel surgery and CPAP in the same subjects to minimize the influence of confounding factors. Fifteen subjects were enrolled with a pretreatment apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 15.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the long-term effects of the uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) combined with oral appliance (OA) in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS).

Several techniques are currently available that aim to characterize upper airway function/mechanics during wakefulness or sleep. Based on the concept of a Starling resistor, we propose a standardized protocol to measure the critical pressure (Pcrit) (an indicator of upper airway collapsibility) during sleep. The sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome is a common disorder. Medical and social complications are frequent. When the condition is untreated, life expectancy is reduced. The standard technique for diagnosing sleep apnea and establishing effective long-term treatment is overnight polysomnography. Limited diagnostic investigations and screening methods are currently being investigated.
