Adenoma Malignum Presenting With Profound Hyponatremia.

BACKGROUND: Adenoma malignum of the cervix (also referred to as minimal deviation adenocarcinoma) is a rare malignancy. Although previous reports have described adenoma malignum presenting with mucinous vaginal discharge, no reports to our knowledge have described a presentation with profound hyponatremia due to fluid losses. CASE: We present a case of adenoma malignum in a 52-year-old woman who presented with substantial watery vaginal discharge and profound hyponatremia. CONCLUSION: Despite being a rare cervical tumour, adenoma malignum should be considered in the differential diagnosis of

A first reported case of clear cell carcinoma associated with delayed extrusion of midurethral tape.

We present the first reported case of clear cell carcinoma associated with a midurethral tape (MUT), the possible hypotheses and the management pitfalls we encountered. We report a 58-year-old woman who presented with symptoms of urinary tract infection and acute retention of urine associated with vaginal tape exposure 10 years after placement of an inside-out transobturator tape. She subsequently had a partial transobturator tape excision and a diagnostic cystoscopy, which revealed inflammatory changes within the urethra. Postoperatively, her symptoms persisted and the vaginal epithelium heal

HPV genotyping 9G membrane test: a point-of-care diagnostic platform.

The results of HPV detection in 550 cervical samples by cervical cytology were compared with the sequencing analysis and HPV genotyping 9G membrane test. The HPV genotyping 9G membrane test can efficiently identify and discriminate five HR-HPV genotypes. The 100% identical results of HPV genotyping 9G membrane tests with the sequencing results in 550 clinical samples ensure its wide clinical applicability. The simple handling steps and the portable scanning device make the HPV genotyping 9G membrane test applicable in point-of-care settings. Moreover, the HPV genotyping 9G membrane test allows

A mentored cooperative group pilot study: atrophic vaginitis.

OBJECTIVES: To review nursing research initiatives from two cooperative groups and outline a pilot study performed by a junior nurse researcher mentored by cooperative group nurse researchers and institutional physicians. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, World Wide Web. CONCLUSION: Nursing research can be initiated and led by nurses in the cooperative group setting. The team approach model of research includes several disciplines to examine multiple facets of the same problem, or of multiple problems that a cancer patient may face. This new model will enable a greater number o

What is hiding behind the pessary?

Vaginal pessaries are routinely used for initial management of pelvic organ prolapse and for women who are poor surgical candidates. Serious complications of long-term use without routine follow-up include erosion into surrounding organs and the development of fistulas. It is unclear however, if long-term use and chronic irritation could potentially contribute to development or delay the diagnosis of vaginal or cervical cancers. A 72-year-old Caucasian woman with a vaginal pessary retained for 3 years, who presented with leukocytosis and coagulopathy, was discovered to have stage II vaginal ad

Vestibular papillomatosis: a benign condition mimicking genital warts.

Vestibular papillomatosis (VP) is a benign condition of the female genitalia that may be mistaken for condyloma acuminatum (genital warts). In contrast to condylomata, lesions of VP each grow from a distinct mucosal insertion; match the color of the surrounding mucosa; and are symmetrically distributed, limited to the inner labia minora and vaginal introitus. Recognition of this entity will help to prevent unnecessary stress, testing, and discomfort.

Cytologic features of hydatidiform mole: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Manifestation of a hydatidiform mole in a cervical cytologic specimen is extremely rare. CASE: A 52-year-old woman presented with heavy vaginal bleeding. Transvaginal ultrasound scan showed a 2.5 x 2.2 x 2.0-cm highly vascular mass-like lesion, containing multiple cystic areas in the lower part of the uterus and partly extending into the cervix and vagina. Cervical cytology revealed much obscuring fresh blood and low cellularity. Most of the cells were large and pleomorphic with orangeophilic cytoplasms and hyperchromatic nuclei and had been misdiagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma

Chemotherapy-induced dyspareunia: a case study of vaginal mucositis and pegylated liposomal doxorubicin injection in advanced stage ovarian carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy can cause vaginal irritation and mucositis, although rarely reported. CASE: A 62-year-old patient with ovarian cancer reported vaginal burning associated with dyspareunia, which emerged 3-5 days after her initial chemotherapy and persisted throughout her treatment. Her discomfort persisted until she was evaluated by our sexual health service and interventions were implemented. On examination, her vaginal vault was erythematous, with mild signs of vaginal atrophy. Her management schema consisted of the following: avoidance of intercourse 3-5 days after chemotherapy, in

Angiosarcoma of the vagina. A light and electronmicroscopy study.

A 73-year-old woman, whose medical history reported radical hysterectomy and radiotherapy for squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix uteri 20 years earlier, was found to have an angiosarcoma of the vagina. The histological diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemical staining of tumor cells for factor VIII-related antigen and ultrastructurally defined vasoformative structures. Primary angiosarcoma of the vagina is quite rare and reported in only two published cases. The present case is a third in general, and the first report confirmed by light microscopy, immunohistochemical, and electronmic

Diagnostic marker displays for intermediate cells from the uterine cervix.

Studies have shown the existence of computer-recognizable subvisual markers in intermediate cells from different cervical conditions that show good potential for discriminating between such "normal" cells from patients with normal, severe dysplasia/carcinoma in situ or invasive cancer cytologies. This paper presents examples of computer graphic displays, based on these markers, that could provide recognizable diagnostic clues to the cytologist, with a discussion of some of the factors involved in the interpretation of such displays.

Sarcoma of the vagina an unusual cytologic diagnosis.

The reported case, exceptional in our oncological material, illustrates the cytologica features of sarcoma of the vagina. We believe that the diagnosis of sarcoma of the cervix or other parts of the female genital system is not difficult providing that the tumor is exfoliating cells. Sarcomatous cells should not be mistaken either with those from keratininzing epitheliomas with desquamated fiber cells or snake cells. Such differentiation should not be a problem for an experienced cytologst. In spite of the low frequency of this malignancy, the microscopical appearance of the cells is so differ
