Craniofacial parameters of Syrian children with β-thalassemia major.

AIM: To investigate cephalometric craniofacial parameters (skeletal and dental) of β-thalassemic-major patients and to compare findings with a group of healthy patients in the same age group. METHODS: Fifty-one Syrian thalassemic-major patients aged 8-12 years were recruited. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken. Linear and angular cephalometric measurements were recorded and compared with Syrian controls (n=50) in the same age group. RESULTS: Thalassemic patients, when compared with controls, showed significant retrognathia in the mandible (reduced sella [mid-point of sella turcica]

Orthodontic-surgical treatment of Class III malocclusion with mandibular asymmetry.

Class III skeletal malocclusion may present several etiologies, among which maxillary deficiency is the most frequent. Bone discrepancy may have an unfavorable impact on esthetics, which is frequently aggravated by the presence of accentuated facial asymmetries. This type of malocclusion is usually treated with association of Orthodontics and orthognathic surgery for correction of occlusion and facial esthetics. This report presents the treatment of a patient aged 15 years and 1 month with Class III skeletal malocclusion, having narrow maxilla, posterior open bite on the left side, anterior cr

Craniofacial characteristics of patients with heart disease.

INTRODUCTION: Children with congenital heart disease commonly experience delayed growth. Studies comparing growth and development of these children generally found that they have decreased height and weight, but with no information on craniofacial growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the craniofacial characteristics of patients with heart disease. METHODS: We used lateral head cephalograms of 131 patients, aged 8 to 12, attending the Department of Pediatrics of the Hospital of the State University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil on a routine basis. The study group comprised 50 boys and 3

The Endo-Distractor for preimplant mandibular regeneration.

OBJECTIVE: A simple practical device for a new technique of vertical distraction osteogenesis was developed. The Endo-Distractor Krenkel was originally intended for the anterior regeneration of highly atrophic mandibles. The Endo-Distractor features several novelties. Placement is made intraosseously in the basal cortical bone. The distraction screw length may be adapted to the depth of chin soft tissues. The quality of anchorage in the basal cortical bone guarantees the stability of the distraction vector. The endobuccal emergence is that of an artificial crown, and does not cause any patient

[Hypodontia: therapeutic strategy elaborated from 30 cases].

INTRODUCTION: Hypodontia is defined as the absence of at least six permanent teeth due to the hypodevelopment of tooth germs. The prevalence is weak and varies according to the ethnic origin. This familial abnormality is due to various mutations or polymorphisms of genes. It may be associated with other dental abnormalities. In children, it is responsible for growth, mastication, and phonation disorders, hypo-alveolia and lingual interposition in the toothless sites. We report the management of 30 patients presenting with oligodontia. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The diagnosis was made on clinical an

A study of cephalometric appraisal of the inheritance of craniofacial pattern in Gorkhas.

The phenotypic expression of biologic variability expressed in the craniofacial complex is influenced by constant interplay of heredity and environmental factors. The aim of this study was to observe the pattern of inheritance of cranio-facial complex in Gorkhas. Gorkhas are the original inhabitants of NEPAL in the slopes of HIMALAYAS and they generally marry strictly in their race. 76 individuals from 19 Gorkha families (son, daughter and both parents); were selected. Eight angular (saddle angle, articular angle, gonial angle, N-S-Gn, N-S-Go, SNA, SNB and ANB angles) and four linear (anterior

Cephalometric evaluation of the craniofacial complex in patients treated with an intraoral distraction osteogenesis device: a long-term study.

INTRODUCTION: Distraction osteogenesis has gained popularity because of the hypothesized concurrent soft-tissue expansion, which is believed to reduce postoperative relapse. Although many articles describe the immediate success of mandibular distraction, little research has been done on its long-term stability. Our goal was to examine the long-term craniofacial changes after distraction. METHODS: Four hemifacial microsomic patients treated with unilateral mandibular distraction were recalled. Changes in maxillary width and height, occlusal height, ramus height, mandibular length, and chin pos

Surface anatomy of the face in Down's syndrome: anthropometric proportion indices in the craniofacial regions.

The objective of the study was to identify the proportions closest to normal and those indicating mild-to-moderate and severe degrees of disproportion. Eight proportion indices were analyzed in five craniofacial regions of 125 Down's syndrome patients, based on a total of 985 data points. More than two thirds of the patients fell within the normal range, although more than one quarter were abnormal (disproportionate). All statistical summaries were based on z-scores (adjusting for age and sex differences), converted into descriptive anthropometric categories to yield a simplified frequency dis

One-stage correction of complex facial disproportion.

Patients with facial disharmony frequently have abnormal nasal form and disordered jaw relationships. Both orthognathic surgery and rhinoplasty are required to correct such facial disproportions. During a 10-year period 100 patients with a spectrum of indications have had concomitant orthognathic and rhinoplasty surgery by a team consisting of the same plastic surgeon, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and orthodontist. Of this group 51 patients were operated on solely for aesthetic reasons, the majority being long face syndrome. All had a rhinoplasty usually with septal surgery. Depending on th

Mandibular morphology and the efficacy of a mandibular advancement device in patients with sleep apnoea.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the outcome of treatment using an intraoral mandibular advancement device in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea is associated with the mandibular morphology. The effects of the device on apnoeas and sleep were evaluated in 32 men with obstructive sleep apnoea in continuous polysomnographic sleep recordings including body position, during one night without the device and one night with it. Mandibular morphology variables were measured on cephalograms. The odds ratio for a supine apnoea-hypopnoea index of below 15 during treatment was 17 f

Level of agreement in clinicians' perceptions of Class II malocclusions.

To evaluate the extent to which surgeons and orthodontists agree on the nature and severity of dentofacial problems requiring orthognathic surgery, three clinicians active in a specialized clinic for treatment of dentofacial deformities scored the pretreatment records of 37 adult class II patients. Each clinician first indicated whether a skeletal/dental problem existed in the maxilla and mandible and then rated the severity of the problem on a visual analog scale. The level of agreement among the three clinicians was highest for dental problems and lowest for skeletal anteroposterior measures

An investigation into the response of palatally displaced canines to the removal of deciduous canines and an assessment of factors contributing to favourable eruption.

The effect of the removal of deciduous canines on palatally displaced maxillary canines was assessed and factors contributing to a successful outcome were analysed. Thirty-nine consecutive patients of mean age 11.2 years (standard deviation 1.43), with 47 palatally displaced canines were included in the study. The cases were examined clinically and radiographically for a maximum period of 2 years following deciduous canine removal. Twenty-nine (62 per cent) of the 47 ectopic canines achieved a normal eruptive position and nine (19 per cent) showed some improvement in eruptive position. The out

Comprehensive three-dimensional positional and morphological assessment of the temporomandibular joint in skeletal Class II patients with mandibular retrognathism in different vertical skeletal patterns.

BACKGROUND: Only a few studies have used 3D cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) analysis to evaluate the positional and morphological characteristics of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in adults with skeletal Class II. No studies have focused on the case of skeletal Class II with mandibular retrognathism in different vertical skeletal patterns. As a result, this study aimed to evaluate and compare the position and morphology of TMJ in adults with skeletal Class II with mandibular retrognathism in different vertical skeletal patterns to the position and morphology of TMJ in the normal Chines

Oral rehabilitation with a removable prosthesis in a patient with Bartter syndrome and cerebral palsy: a case report.

Bartter syndrome is a renal disease with repercussions on the masticatory system, such as modification of the oral microbiota due to persistent emesis. The present case report describes the oral rehabilitation of a patient who had Bartter syndrome, cerebral palsy, diabetes, and significant oral limitations, including restricted mouth opening (less than 3 cm), xerostomia, loss of vertical dimension, and communication difficulties. In addition, there was an esthetic concern about the absence of the maxillary anterior teeth, which were lost during intubation for a surgical procedure. The patient …

[Role of counterclockwise rotation of the mandible in the orthodontic treatment of skeletal ClassⅡhyperdivergent patterns and concomitant temporomandibular disorders].

Patients with skeletal ClassⅡ hyperdivergent patterns often present with mandibular retrognathism, increased lower facial height, and excessive vertical dimension of occlusion, resulting in an unaesthetic facial profile and a higher incidence of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Conventional treatments such as camouflage orthodontics with extraction or single-jaw surgery often struggle to achieve a balance between improving facial aesthetics and functional outcomes. In recent years, a treatment approach centered on counterclockwise rotation (CCR) of the mandible has gained attention. By adjust…

Deep orbital reconstruction for correction of post-traumatic enophthalmos.

Post-traumatic enophthalmos is a complex orbital deformity resulting from an injury disrupting orbital bone and ligament support, allowing displacement and a change in shape of the orbital soft-tissue contents. Clinically, this is manifested by inferior and posterior displacement of the globe, pseudoptosis, and deepening of the supratarsal fold. Soft-tissue changes such as canthal malposition and shortening of the horizontal dimension of the palpebral fissure are present when unreduced nasoethmoidal orbital fractures exist. The essential principles of surgical correction include full dissectio
